Just that really. Will he be found?

I'm genuinely surprised at 67 being called old.

I actually don't think I've heard anyone in real life call people in their sixties "elderly" before.

Anyway I hope he's found

Theweepywillow · 07/06/2024 11:54

SwingingPonytail · 07/06/2024 11:51

I think the 'argument' is that someone of 67 was 'elderly' and shouldn't be out walking.

No one should be out walking in 40C around midday - not even a 30 year old unless they simply have to - and are well equipped with the right clothing, litres of water and are fit.

A lot of 67 year olds are fitter than obese 45 year olds.

Why are people repeatedly saying 40 degree, it reached mid 30s they said and it was 1.30 when he left and it was cooler. So likely early 30s. Still hot but not 40 at mid day,

SwingingPonytail · 07/06/2024 11:56

@Oaktree55 you've just said he wasn't healthy himself.

What do you mean?

He's recently reversed his diabetes by losing a lot of weight (well, that was few years ago now.) He's on record as saying he and his wife start the say with squats and lunges, and other exercises.

Is there anything else you know?

Scorchio84 · 07/06/2024 11:56

Theweepywillow · 07/06/2024 11:45

I couldn’t agree with you more. I cannot beleive anyone is arguing over emojis in the thread.

and I also think the only reasonable explanation is he has sadly went in the water,

It's beyond pedantic & nit picky & sadly I think you're right about his fate, so sad, he seemed like a cool man, who was loved & he helped so many

we must be reading different sources as I read several saying it as 40C and 48C predicted today.

Last night on BBC news at 10, a reporter on the island said 40C.

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 11:52

A lot of people on this thread are underestimating what heat can do. It’s predicted to feel 48c there today in sun and people here are saying it’s only 2km walk! He may have earned his living from selling health but he was not healthy himself with obviously a family history of dying relatively young. They were both medically trained his behaviour was over confident not sensible given his own particular circumstances.

What do you mean he wasn’t healthy?

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 11:58

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 07/06/2024 11:37

But 67 is elderly. No matter what anyone says, a person who is just a couple of years off their 70s, IS going to be more vulnerable than someone say, in their 20s, 30s, or even 40s. It's not 'ageist' to state this extremely obvious fact.

Even when there is a flu virus going around, the medical experts say that older people (over 65 usually) will be much more likely to be seriously ill from it, than someone who is only say, 20-45.

Why do people get so upset and angry at people stating facts, just because it's about someone a bit older? Confused I find this very bizarre attitude on here a lot. Never see it in real life.

Yes it’s elderly. You may not feel old but it’s still elderly. It’s not an insult it’s a fact.

Maybe they meant in the sun. The official temperature is measured in the shade and the website I looked on said between 32-34 for the next week or so.

SparrowFeet · 07/06/2024 11:59

I don't understand why the alarm was raised 6 hours after he went missing.
That suggests they knew he was going for a longer walk and not just a stroll.

Not really - it could be that his wife didn't leave until much later and given it was only a twenty minute walk would not have checked he was back until she got back herself.

Its a very odd situation. 67 isn't 27 for sure. I speak as nearly that age.
Why did he decide to do this?
I wonder if he's hit his head possibly.

Sad story, hoping for a good outcome.

Rubbishconfession · 07/06/2024 12:01

In actual terms he’s only just been missing for 48 hours, as he left his wife and friends at 1.30pm on Weds.

RisingMist · 07/06/2024 12:02

I agree that most people shouldn't be out walking in 40C weather (unless perhaps they are well acclimatised to hot weather, fit, and well prepared with the right clothing, experience and equipment).

However, it is disingenuous to pretend that a 67 year old is not more medically vulnerable, on average, than a 27 year old or a 47 year old. Obviously being fit and following a healthy lifestyle counts for a lot, but aging proceeds regardless and the risk of developing many medical conditions goes up a lot as you get older. No-one knows what happened at this point, but it is quite conceivable that he e.g. started suffering from heat stress and had a heart attack (or even just fainted) and fell into the water.

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 12:03

I don’t understand why people don’t use these tragedies (same with Nicola Bully and water safety) to learn from them. Instead you get idiots saying I’m nearly 70 I’d go on a 2 km trek in heat without a phone. Just think gosh how awful what can I learn from this either for me or a family member? Such a silly reaction from so many.

Why did he decide to do it? He went for a short walk on a clearly laid out path whilst on holiday, hardly groundbreaking or extreme stuff 🙄

Out of curiosity which island and why were you miserable?

Ha! Xenophobia and all that. Its not like you read about for sure.

Bouledeneige · 07/06/2024 12:05

These days 67 is not elderly. Over 75 or 80 is elderly.

Nevertheless the effects of heat can be debilitating for anyone and the older you are the more likely it is to be impactful.

It's 100% a PRAYER emoji. How embarrassing for you.

🙏

THIS is high five.

🙌

I am not embarrassed in the slightest
Nice try

Oh dear.

If he told his wife he wasn’t well and was going home, it begs the question why didn’t she report him missing until several hours later? I get that she was off doing her own thing but if he wasn’t well wouldn’t she have checked in on him at some point before then?

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 12:07

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 11:58

Yes it’s elderly. You may not feel old but it’s still elderly. It’s not an insult it’s a fact.

Again we are not just talking about his age.

We were talking about what he was trying to do at this age.

He did something that medical professionals would say is perfectly reasonable to do at his age. Go for a walk

yumyumyumy · 07/06/2024 12:08

I hope he's found soon. A healthy 67 year old isn't some senile confused old duffer. I think he took health seriously. He's likely a lot fitter than people half his age. He could have easily slipped or fallen though, which anyone can do in rough terrain.

SwingingPonytail · 07/06/2024 12:08

Theweepywillow · 07/06/2024 12:00

So?

The report was yesterday on the TV. So that was just 24 hours and they were talking about the temp on the day he went missing.

Biologically we are still the same species.

SwingingPonytail · 07/06/2024 12:10

@Oaktree55 I can only assume that you are very young yourself.

If you feel that 67 is elderly, fine, keep thinking that.

But I'm afraid it shows you're perhaps living a sheltered life where either you don't know many people in their 60s or the ones you do are very unfit and perhaps overweight too.
