GROSS PHOTO WARNING - Frozen peas or A&E?

I’ve NC’d for this as my knees may be identifiable 🤣
Went arse over tit at lunchtime today on the pavement.
Really hurt my knees - but my left one in particular is extremely painful and I can’t bend it and I’m dragging it around When I walk.

Is it a case of (continuing with) frozen peas or A&E??

Right knee for comparison which is sore but not nearly as painful as the left knee

If you can’t bend it then straight to A&E.

Based on the fact that my mum tried to treat my grandma after a fall with frozen peas and it turns out she had shattered her kneecap, I'm saying A&E!

Phone 111 or go to a minor injuries unit

Please go to A&E

Overthebow · 05/06/2024 22:16

A&E, that looks awful.

SoulMole · 05/06/2024 22:17

I'm a frequent faller. I'd wait until morning and get to minor injuries as early as you can. Saves long wait overnight and they can refer straight into fracture clinic if needed. Most have x ray now in my town. Good luck.

BellaVita · 05/06/2024 22:18

My DIL slipped off the kerb and her knee looked like yours - she had broken her kneecap.

Go and get it checked out.

Nopet · 05/06/2024 22:20

Stick with frozen peas overnight over a tea towel to avoid ice burn and ibuprofen.Review again tomorrow morning. AE would not actually triage you until the morning TBH!

slipperypenguin · 05/06/2024 22:20

A&E

Sauvblanctime · 05/06/2024 22:20

A&E

AmandaHoldensLips · 05/06/2024 22:21

A&E.
That needs an Xray.

Sauvblanctime · 05/06/2024 22:22

The sizes of it, the swelling, the fact you can’t bend it. Absolutely a&e

TokyoSushi · 05/06/2024 22:23

Oh OP, that looks sore! A&E but I might be tempted to wait until the morning now, although it could be a long night either way...

Triphazard22 · 05/06/2024 22:25

Can you lift your leg off the bed? I suspect not.

I also broke my kneecap several years ago and that was how they could tell.

Sorry, but I think it's an A&E job too. I had to have surgery to repair mine, so the quicker you get seen, the quicker you get treated.

Wishing you well.

LollipopViolet · 05/06/2024 22:27

That looks so painful OP! I'd say A&E, given what other posters have said about their own experiences.

Aussieland · 05/06/2024 22:29

A&E! Looks like it might be a patella fracture (take the frozen peas with you though!)

Ukholidaysaregreat · 05/06/2024 22:29

I think A and E. Does it look like the knee cap is in the wrong place? They might be able to give you better drugs too.

TokyoSushi · 05/06/2024 22:31

Actually, looking at it again, go now!

yumyumyumy · 05/06/2024 22:32

I'd call 111 and go to a minor injuries unit in the morning. You'd only be waiting on a chair all night in a&e if you went now

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 05/06/2024 22:33

Um, your left kneecap looks in the wrong place... I'd go. But I have no idea if they will scan you or do anything overnight, apart from give you pain meds...

Hugs. 💐

startingagain17 · 05/06/2024 22:34

You could have fluid under the knee cap that requires draining. I say this as a veteran on knee dislocation and I also attained an injury similar to yours both resulting in fluids under the knee. I think you could quite possibly need a&e with this.

You will wait in A&E no matter what time you go at. It’s irrelevant.

specialsauce · 05/06/2024 22:35

If it were me I'd do a few mobility tests with the child - bending, twisting, putting weight on it. If any of these cause a sharp pain or crunching noise/sensation, frozen peas and straight to A&E.

If it doesn't cause a sharp pain or crunching noise/sensation - frozen peas, mobility checks again in an hour.

and repeat until swelling goes down

Copperoliverbear · 05/06/2024 22:36

A &E

determinedtomakethiswork · 05/06/2024 22:36

That looks horrific. To be honest I don't know whether I'd go to A&E at the moment or first thing in the morning. I'm not sure whether you would be seen before first thing in the morning. Could you phone the hospital and ask what the waiting time is like?
