PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 05/06/2024 18:58

A Senior German detective has told a court that investigators had found emails on a Hotmail account used by Christian Brueckner that linked him directly to the Madeleine McCann case.

However, the detective was unable to share details of the evidence as it was 'related to the killing' of Madeleine. Brueckner, the prime suspect, is currently on trial in Germany for unrelated sex crimes.

Is it true that Gerry played tennis the following day, a prior arrangement? Like you would? Or is that a lie?

Yes he attended a tennis coaching session that had been pre arranged the day after the disappearance.

No wonder some people dont want their appalling behaviour remembered.

But this did happen all the time with certain holidays companies and in British hotels too. Nowadays many foreign and British hotels offer babysitting services with 'unknown babysitters'.

Obviously many parents on here would not leave their kids in holiday clubs or with unknown babysitters but every time I've been on holiday there are many kids left by their parents all day in kids clubs and again in the evening.

Absolutely right. I was a holiday rep in the 00s and the kids reps for all the major tour ops did a babysitting service. Depending on age and resort it was either apartment checks every 15 - 20 mins or in the kids club. The kids reps worked on a rota system for it as it was a compulsory part of their evening duties, as opposed to the nights out which were a compulsory part of youth/mainline rep evening duties.

Some people didn't want to use it, for others it was the only time they got to spend a couple of hours having a well deserved meal out as a couple 🤷‍♀️

I can’t help but wonder that if the Mcanns had been chavy
sort dressed Burberry plaid would the press and everyone else have been so understanding of leaving a small child and two small babies alone.
I meet a lady a who stayed at the same place and she said where they were eating was actually some distance from the hotel. I do feel for them but in what world was it ok to leave little ones alone.

Actually, information on the internet is somewhat inconsistent about this. Looking at what I can find, it is possible that social media has managed to conflate a tennis lesson that took place in the afternoon before Madeleine's disappearance and a match with friends a few days later. Whatever happened, I wouldn't read anything into it. People react to this kind of event in different ways. Some will try to carry on with as normal a life as possible as a way of distracting themselves from what has happened.

That really would be living the dream.

Imagine sticking to facts and just NOT talking about what you would or would not have done in a situation you will never been in and happened 17 years ago.

Fucking hell its ridiculous.

OneFrenchEgg · 06/06/2024 19:50

I know @Psychoticbreak I've seen you trying to steer us back to the current witnesses - the is reference in this to the bravery of one of them

itspreposterous · 06/06/2024 19:52

I can see why Kate and Gerry might have refused to cooperate with the police in Portugal. They destroyed the crime scene and very quickly seemed more concerned about tourists not wanting to come to Portugal then a missing toddler, of course the Mcanns wanted the British police to take over so would I!
As for their behaviour afterwards, it's strange looking in from the outside but fuck knows how you'd react.. years ago as a teenager I worked in a coffee shop, their was an older woman who worked with me who was in charge of opening the shop. I got a phone call one night from management saying he needed to drop me a set of keys, her son had been murdered that day.. 6iclk the next morning there she was, telling me life has to go on...
she had a full nervous breakdown about 3 months later.
Unless they find a body or other plain as day evidence it will be hard to charge him but they are certain enough to name him.. this guy is a pedophile piece of shit who had been waiting around that resort.. point your fingers at the man who took a sleeping toddler away from two (very silly) but loving parents.

Psychoticbreak · 06/06/2024 19:52

@OneFrenchEgg she waived anonymity to help other women, to help other families, shes reliving the worst ever night of her life and all that is being discussed is a totally moot point that has happened and can never be changed and will not change the outcome of her ordeal or others.l

TravChief · 06/06/2024 19:54

Nobody knows how somebody will react to something terrible happening, everyone reacts differently and should be able to do so without judgment. People shouldn’t expect German judicial processes to be the same as UK ones. I really hope her parents get certainty one day about her fate, they must have suffered very much.

Yeah it's so frustrating. We were all wondering obviously so it's good anonymous people have cleared it up for when we ask them to babysit...

gofigure5 · 06/06/2024 19:17

Yes, but I suppose I wouldn't live my life expecting trouble or that things would happen. I'm just one of those people. It's the same with flying, going in the car, crossing the road, letting my children play freely (with an eye on them) at the playground. I was not one of those (increasingly common) 'sweeping in' parents.

It's not 'sweeping in' to give adequate care to 2 and 3 year old children, it really isn't. You might want to consider if your baseline is negligent.

Workhardcryharder · 06/06/2024 20:06

OchonAgusOchonOh · 06/06/2024 17:52

Responding to claims by people that leaving children alone was normal by stating that it was not normal and was and is negligent is perfectly reasonable.

???? But it was normal and very common.

The opinion that it was “negligent” is subjective. Things were different nearly 20 years ago, and although many people would have thought it wasn’t appropriate back then, plenty thought it was fine.

There are lots of things we do now that will be seen as negligent in 20 years.

The reason it was so commented on 17 years ago was because it was not common for the day and age - not in 2007. 1987, sure.

There's no need to rewrite history - people commented at the time in accordance of the norms of the time.

I have little sympathy they were both in high paying jobs and chose to scrimp on the small amount it would have cost to employ a sitter. They’ve paid the price. Read the detail of his stories he wrote about his fantasy of kidnapping a young child. That poor child suffered unimaginable horrors before being murdered.

You have little sympathy? How disgusting. My heart aches for them whenever I see a picture of Madeline. They made a huge huge mistake that they are paying for every day, especially after reading what kind of awful things he’s done to other people. Of course they shouldn’t have left her but I’m sure they know that now. No parent deserves this

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/06/2024 20:13

But it was normal enough in 2007 that it was offered in hotels across the world by more than one holiday company. Lots of people wouldn’t have done it but lots of people would. That’s why these threads always go round in circles on it. Just because everyone in your social circle would/wouldn’t have done it doesn’t mean that everyone is the same.

User8646382 · 06/06/2024 20:22

The weirdest thing to me about the MM case was the involvement of the slimy Alistair Campbell before anyone knew what was what or who might have been responsible. It was just so bizarre that someone associated with the UK government would act as a spokesperson for people who were under suspicion with the Portuguese police.

It’s like none of the facts have ever been presented in an unbiased way because of people like Campbell pulling strings. But why? None of it has ever made sense.

They weren't staying in a hotel. They had an apartment on a main road which was a thoroughfare for people in the town generally. And they left the door unlocked.

There was nothing or standard about the decisions they made.

I have every sympathy for them but their actions were not usual - I have no idea how old you are or if you were a parent at the time but I can assure you there was huge public outcry about their behaviour in leaving their vulnerable children in this manner.

British parents new all too well the dangers of temporarily taking eyes of children the ages of the McCann children after the hugely publicised abduction of James Bulger in 1993.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to write history. It's an objective fact that many, many people at the time we absolutely astounded by the McCann's parenting.

IsoldeWagner · 06/06/2024 20:26

You're right, @boobyandthebeast . It certainly was not acceptable at the time. They came in for a lot of criticism.
My kids are a bit older, and I remember thinking how irresponsible they were.

hotpotlover · 06/06/2024 20:32

I wasn't a parent at the time, but I remember very well when it happened. There certainly was a public outcry about leaving children that small unsupervised in a holiday apartment.

I still feel sorry for the parents and what they are going through.

I think it is an example of how people go on holiday and behave in a different, less careful, less cautious, less conscious way. I nearly got in a situation where I would have been raped when I was 18 and on holiday in Greece. Did something I would never ever have done in the UK. I was horrified at myself afterwards.

boobyandthebeast · 06/06/2024 20:34

I feel particularly sad for Kate McCann and the whole thing about her having an impending sense of doom about the holiday has made me wonder if she knew she was going to be pressured into doing something like this which was outside of her comfort zone as a parent.

itspreposterous · 06/06/2024 20:35

@boobyandthebeast

I agree that for most it wasn't normal to leave your children alone in a room.. I had my first baby in 2002 so a similar age to Madeline.
I remember having a huge pram that was actually a nightmare to get around London and down the aisles in small shops , my dad once suggested I just leave the baby outside the shop like he did with me!
As for going on holiday, I do think now it was pretty silly of me to just trust the kids clubs at hotels, I've actually no idea what checks the people who run TUI hotel kids clubs go through. But to not use anyone and just go out definitely wasn't normal in 2007.. They've obviously paid for that in the worst way possible.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/06/2024 20:37

I have a child the same age as MM. I am middle class and would have gone on the same sort of holiday and have been to Portugal many times. I'm afraid it was NOT normal/acceptable to do what MM's parents (and their whole friendship group remember) did re. leaving a 3 year old and babies in an unlocked appartment to go out for the evening so I really would like to put this argument to bed now finally. It doesn't mean I blame them for what happened - the perpetrator is to blame for this just like any crime. But I cannot accept the narrative that parents were more slack a mere 20 years ago. It just isn't the case.
