A Senior German detective has told a court that investigators had found emails on a Hotmail account used by Christian Brueckner that linked him directly to the Madeleine McCann case.

However, the detective was unable to share details of the evidence as it was 'related to the killing' of Madeleine. Brueckner, the prime suspect, is currently on trial in Germany for unrelated sex crimes.

Mark Williams Thomas seems pretty sure that he couldn’t have had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance. Can’t remember why.

crumblingschools · 06/06/2024 10:31

A work colleague was going to the same resort 2 days after Madeleine disappeared. When talking in the office after the news was announced she said she had been planning to do exactly what the parents did in respect of leaving similar aged children in the room whilst they ate at nearby restaurant. Obviously, they didn't in the end

Now they are claiming they have E-mails which they accessed in 2019?

They've sat on them for 5 years?

I think the German police are full of shit personally.

I always hope she’s alive somewhere.
whatever happened, I hope the family find peace & some sort of closure eventually.

True, but only if she hasn't been suffering unimaginably all this time.

The double standards on Mumsnet really do make me laugh though. There was a thread on here, not so long ago where a mother was talking about how she and her husband left their two children in the house, alone, so they could go to the pub or something and they would get home at 10pm. She was given a very hard time, as you would expect. The children were about 10 and 8.

But when it’s the McCanns it’s different? Sorry, it is not different. If they did leave the children in the apartment then they were not in a position to supervise them properly.

It's not about double standards it's about giving people peace decades later.

It's a totally different scenario if someone is currently doing it than to keep judging people who have paid the price in the worst possible way.

Everyone who talks about double standards on Mumsnet or who says if we reversed the situation from a man to a woman sounds like they're just on a wind up. Why would you bother to be on a forum that you clearly so despise.

Still better than the Portugese police who did naff all for the victims of rape all them years ago.

Have you not noticed all the posts on this thread which say that leaving tiny children alone in an hotel room is a normal thing to do?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/06/2024 10:36

For those insisting that the McCanns have been treated "differently" to most others, there's also the issue of the massive funding provided and whether the same would have been made available to parents less able to afford expensive representation

It's also said that a lot of the publicly donated money has gone on legal advice, mortgage payments and god knows what else, but as ever in these cases a lot of things are said and so far we still don't know the truth of what actually happened

VinnieVanDog · 06/06/2024 10:37

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/06/2024 10:26

My child was a similar age. I would never ever have done that. Ever. It wasn’t normal at all.

Same. It was not normal and I can only think of one parent who might have done this, the same parent who let their dc walk home from school alone at age 6.

I remember feeling revulsion when, soon after it happened, Victoria Derbyshire did a phone-in on Radio 5 asking if people thought the McCann's had been negligent, it seemed so cruel to them - at that point I had no idea that Madelaine had told them she and the babies were upset at being left.

They're not to blame for the evil that happened but they put their children in harms way for the sake of their own pleasure and I do judge them for that.

Exactly. The McCanns relatives said quite openly that the find Madeleine fund was going to be used to pay legal fees. Since then, the parents have tried to silence anyone who questions their version of what happened.

“They were in high paying jobs they could afford a sitter” is such weird logic. How does that then apply it they had been in low paying jobs and couldn’t afford a sitter? Does that then not count against them?

it makes it even more absurd though, if you can’t afford a sitter you simply don’t go out until you can.

to be able to afford a sitter and have gone out and left them alone is horrifyingly negligent and i’m certain a ‘lower class’ family would maybe even of been charged!

Imbusytodaysorry · 06/06/2024 10:41

SloaneStreetVandal · 06/06/2024 09:15

99.9% of parents don't pay any 'price' for the decisions they make. The consequences of the decision the McCanns made was entirely by chance; people without the reverse snobbery chip on their shoulder accept that.

The focus on them, rather than the person who abducted their daughter, is borne of resentment. Nothing more. Ghouls who think the McCanns owe them (personally!) an apology, because in their own inferior thought process ALL affluent qualified professional people think they're better than me.

The small percentage is still too large and could be stopped if the parent kept “ parenting” their children.
They had a choice , they aren’t even single parents with no time off . They are a two parent family and could have taken it in turns for some “time out” with friends .

Parents who leave their children un attended are selfish and irresponsible.
Anyone on here saying it’s ok only do so as they have done it or would. .

Of course the McCanns paid a high and terrible price but you can’t just scrub the part that they have some responsibility.

The scum bag who did what they did to that wee girl should be hung and if people knew who was responsible their anger would be in that direction , but for now it is aimed at the parents as that’s all anyone has .

Who are these people that think the parents should give them a personal apology ? What are you talking about ?

Wow so you think people are only outraged as they are below the McCanns?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 06/06/2024 10:43

SoupDragon · 06/06/2024 09:48

No it isn't. It is victim blaming pure and simple and disgusting.

Posters who keep harping on about it need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Nope & Nope.

The McCanns did leave their children unsupervised. That's a fact. If they hadn't left them she would still be here.

They are only victims because they created that opportunity...
A irrational mistake that cost them dearly.

And like many other posts, I spent my fair share of holidays sitting in an apartment or hotel room by 7/8 pm because my DC were ready for bed.
It never crossed my mind to leave them and go off for a fancy meal & a glass or two of wine.

oakleaffy · 06/06/2024 10:51

There was a truly appalling murder of a young boy, Tristan Brubach in a gloomy tunnel under a station in Germany - The suspect in that case going by e-fit is also very like Christian Brueckner according to witnesses.

They didn’t do anything wrong apart from a bad call leaving her at the apartment

That's a pretty big wrong. I feel so sorry for them though despite their terrible judgement. My DC's were born early 2000 and no way on earth would I have ever left them alone like that.

My parents never left us alone, it just wouldn’t have even occurred to them thank god.

User8646382 · 06/06/2024 10:54

It’s a very strange one this, isn’t it? The media basically pointed to this individual as MM’s murderer about five years ago, but in all that time, the police haven’t charged him with anything in relation to that case. Why not if the evidence is so overwhelming?

And why even mention MM in the unrelated rape case he is currently on trial for? Won’t it prejudice any future prosecution?

Westfacing · 06/06/2024 10:55

I was bringing up young children in the 80s - it was not the norm to leave children alone in a holiday apartment; some people did but it was certainly not what most families did. I was far from the perfect mother and cringe when I think of various au pairs/babysitters that my children were sometimes left with.

A nearly three-year old who wakes up, an unlocked door, a public road at the side, and an open air swimming pool a few metres away - what could go wrong?

The parents made the wrong decision and the whole family have been paying a terrible price since. I hope they get some definitive answer one day.

Beefcurtains79 · 06/06/2024 10:58

XiCi · 06/06/2024 08:24

No sorry, you don't just get to say nobody's perfect when 2 adults put their own selfish wants and needs ahead of the safety of their young children and a child dies because of it.

This. People also don’t get to dictate what they are allowed to discuss with regards to them being left alone.

oakleaffy · 06/06/2024 11:00

Regarding the lack of a babysitter for the McCann children.

When the disappearance of Madeleine first hit the headlines ''I bet it's a single parent from a rough background who is out partying leaving her children unsupervised''

{My own bias}

When it came to light that it was two GP's {well paid and one would assume cognisant of risk of children left alone} I was really shocked as to why they too that risk.

Having said that..my own middle class parents did leave me in a tent on a French camp site as a 7 yr old when they went to the Camp site Bar- but probably asked the people in the next tent to keep an eye on me.

I don't remember being scared, but was glad when they came back.

DelusionalBrilliance · 06/06/2024 11:00

Anyone focusing on the parents and not the monster who took madeleine, really needs to sort their life out. The act of leaving children in a place you deemed acceptable and safe at the time, versus an evil man who stole a child, are not comparable. Victim blaming is the lowest of the low.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/06/2024 11:01

... the parents have tried to silence anyone who questions their version of what happened

Indeed, @Onomatofear, and while that's understandable with outright accusations and some of the worst speculation, we simply don't know if any other motivation exists for the "shutting down"

Trouble is, when people don't know some make things up to fill the gap and it isn't necessarily helpful

DelusionalBrilliance · 06/06/2024 11:04

@XiCi Madeleine wasn’t hurt by being in the apartment with her siblings, she was harmed by the monster who thought he could steal a child. The two acts are not comparable. Every time you say it’s the parents fault you are detracting from the vile creature who stole a child. Do you not understand? It’s akin to those idiots who say a woman who was wearing a short skirt deserved it. Gross.

“What could go wrong” you’re hypothesising about things that didn’t happen. What DID happen was a sick man stole a child. Stop defending child abductors.
