#ChildBenefit update - pls share

After my Twitter poll earlier which indicates 80% of those expecting child benefit payments this morning haven't got them, we contacted HMRC. It's told us...

  • 30% of people who should have been paid today haven’t been (possible, the poll is self selecting so those who haven't got are more likely to respond), this still likely means huge numbers of people
  • HMRC doesn’t have an exact cause or timeframe on fixing the problem to share at this stage! Though it is working on it urgently
  • It request people DON'T call it right now about this (it won't help till they sort. We'll update when we hear more)
  • Once the issue has been fixed, if people are out of pocket, they should complain to HMRC for redress (so I'd suggests this means if you've had a charge as a payment bounced due to no Child Benefit, note it down and then later try asking it to cover that charge).

More updates when we have them

Maybe it's a weekly issue. Ours is monthly and gone in today.

I'm really surprised so many people are desperate, for what is, usually a petty amount.

You’re surprised that there are a lot of people for who every penny counts? Have you missed the news in recent years about the amount of people living pay cheque to pay cheque?

“We’re sorry that some customers’ Child Benefit payments have not arrived as scheduled and we are working urgently to resolve the issue," HMRC said in a statement.
It said the issues that caused Monday’s problems would not impact payments scheduled for Tuesday.
Anyone impacted by the technical problems can submit a complaint online.

Whether or not it's "a petty amount" very much depends on your financial circumstances.

Is it really such a stretch for your imagination to realise that when someone is so poor they have to watch every penny, not getting £25.60 or £42 is pretty fucking significant?

Yes I'm actually. Given the amount we're referring to is around £50 max, it's not unreasonable to assume that most would have a saving cushion.

I think you need to consider yourself very lucky. For many people there is no chance of having a savings cushion just hope that they can stretch that months income far enough to eat every day

It is unreasonable, actually. 30% of people in the UK regularly have to go overdrawn.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 03/06/2024 14:05

Given the amount we're referring to is around £50 max,

Mine gets' paid monthly - now down to two kids and it's much more than that.

This months is more important than usual due to exam costs - taxi needed as bus timetable cut pus increase in bus fares and me still being out of wack from last month due to travel and accommodation costs to to close family members funeral.

Though when kids were young even £50 could at times be a huge amount - we did get down to counting pennies and looking down back of sofa and bags.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 03/06/2024 14:05

There's a news item on the BBC website about this and they're asking for people who are affected to contact them ~ could I suggest that some of you do this. Your stories really need to be told so that this gets sorted quickly and, hopefully, never happens again . . . .

My knowledge on this may be out of date, but your energy supplier may be able to arrange emergency credit if you can ring them.

There are so many stressed, worried parents today and you are not helping the situation. Give them a break!!

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 03/06/2024 14:19

This absolutely appalling, what a mess. I got ours today, I'm a 4 weekly person though. I did get a wee bit more so I wonder if we've all had an uplift and inputting the changes has fried the system.

For those of you who haven't got it would speaking to your bank about a temporary emergency overdraft be of any use? This is now a well reported nationwide problem so you might get more traction than on an ordinary day.

Lastly, to those PPs throwing about "can people really be this desperate?" and "petty amounts " and "savings cushions", go away and have a really hard look at yourselves. Your lack of basic empathy shames you.

I'm retired so obviously don't get child benefit but it's not hard to put myself in the shoes of parents for whom it's a godsend .

I think you must be on a deliberate wind up .

  1. A lot of people live from month to month and are not able to save - low pay and cost of living are to blame.
  2. It's not £50, it's a lot more. For 2 children it's about £200 every 4 weeks and yes, that matters if you have direct debits going out. Get some empathy.
Fab238 · 03/06/2024 14:52

Alright folks - I was genuinely shocked, hence why I made that comment. This is a discussion forum and I was merely expressing my shock, I didn't say anytbing else. Hope the issue gets resolved ASAP:)

I get mine at the end of the month so not affected by today's news. Feel really sorry for everyone else though, hope it gets resolved soon.
