Exclusive: Rishi Sunak’s aides are considering hardening the Tory party’s position on the ECHR, as Nigel Farage plunged their campaign into crisis

— senior party aides have sounded out moderate ministers on whether they could back a tougher stance

If in doubt move further away from your core vote?

Can we please stop calling him frog face? Despite the unfortunate resemblance, we need to consider the feelings of the millions of frogs in the UK, who are both blameless and adorable, and would never vote for him.

I agree. Animals should not be insulted.

I objected to the nickname used for the latest Mrs Johnson and comparison with a squirrel.

Would they? We don’t know who those donors are or why they’ve backed out. I suspect it might be because they don’t want to throw money away on backing a loser.

If that's the case, it would be nice to think they might throw the money Labour's way.

Fuxake, why is Sunak so convinced that appeasing the right is the way to go? He tried it before the local elections, it didn't work.

You are correct, I am very sorry. I do hope no frogs were offended by my comments. Frogs are far too intelligent to be associated with that dullard.

"Would they? We don’t know who those donors are or why they’ve backed out. I suspect it might be because they don’t want to throw money away on backing a loser."

You are right in that they probably don't want to back a losing campaign.

However the FT article specifically says that the donors would back Patel/Jenrick/Braverman in a leadership contest after a defeat in the general election. So we can tell that those donors think leaning further right is the way forward for the Consservatives.

I fear after the election we are going to be left with the bottom of the barrel Conservatives and Farage - and we will be destined to spend another 5 years in purgatory as the Cons/Farage propose ever madder policies (fuck-business-bendy-bananas-ECHR-ignore-the-GFA) and the Telegraph/Times/Mail will continue to give them credence. Especially if Gove gets a job editing Telegraph/Times.

But then I am not known for my optimism.

I think they've switched to Farage. Sunak is a busted flush.

FWIW I think the same is about to happen to Trump but I don't know who the heir apparent is.

Who's Bannon with these days?

Yes, Trump, CassieMaddox, I've been pondering that too, given Nige's urgent swivel, can the orange one be getting the elbow 🙏? Something obviously went wrong with NF's plans to leg it to USA. What appropriate initials Nige has, not noticed before.

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2024 13:26

I wonder if donors are as willing to invest in Reform - as a private company it doesn't have the same checks and balances as a standard political party. You may as well stick your cash in Farage's back pocket.

"Who's Bannon with these days?"

Think he's about to begin 4 months in prison for contempt of court.

Still MAGAering I think. Perennial victim.

Wonder what Aaron Banks is doing.

Rather enjoying this
Ledbydonkeys do great work 👏

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2024 13:37

I don't see Farage standing as an MP as evidence of the end of Trump.

I have every confidence Farage will jet off in October and reappear intermittently to stir the UK pot. Trump will be delighted that Farage has a seat in the HoC.

Farage doesn't care about 2024. He cares about 2029. His strategy is to divide the right, destroy the Tories, and then replace them.

Many Tory MPs want to return to something like the centre - a party recognisable to John Major or Rory Stewart. Farage wants to ...
Russ Jones

... make sure the Tories lose even more seats so he can either make a pact with whatever is left (essentially take over) or make Reform the home of the right - either way, he wants to pull the right endlessly towards the far right.

And he'll have help. The...

... right wing media, GB News and a million social media bots will cheer him every step of the way. Ultimately he wants Britain to end up like the USA, choosing between an excessively-cautious nominally "left" party and a wildly incautious, increasingly extreme right...

... he'll demand ever more authoritarian answers, based on ever more simplistic slogans. He'll constantly promise his "solutions" will work next time, they just haven't the previous 100 times because of deep-state plots (which don't exist). And he'll fuck up the country ...

... I haven't got much time for the Tories (quelle surprise!) but the last few sensible ones need to act. Straight after the election they need to select a sensible moderate who will resist Farage. Cos if they don't, the Conservatives are done, and the country is buggered.

I know its biased in one way but as an overview on him and his wife and their life it does put things into perspective.

CassieMaddox · 04/06/2024 14:45

I didn't know that about the banking crash 😱

It’s obscene, I so wish the myth of the Tories being capable with taxpayers money was busted out of the water, they are & never have been fiscally sensible, they have wrecked peoples dreams & aspirations plunging so many into the nightmare of poverty/insecure housing/ practically non existent health care very little public resources that should be a fucking right not a privilege & bashing at every opportunity the sick/vulnerable young & old/benefits etc etc ..
Its unforgivable.

So who's funding Farage?

pointythings · 04/06/2024 15:52

Farage has been milkshaked again - in Clacton. Hundreds turned out to cheer on his campaign launch though, I reckon he's in with a chance of winning that seat.

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2024 15:53

"So who's funding Farage?"

Isn't that the main question.

Tice has chucked £2.5 million at Reform. A lot of that will be sucked up in admin costs of running a national campaign.
So I doubt that will keep Farage in Coutts accounts.

Clacton includes one of the poorest areas in England (Jaywick) and the oldest average voter age.
I'm sure he'll promise them everything. And then not turn up to Friday surgery.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/06/2024 15:59

Can you blame him? Who wants to spend every Friday in Clacton?Wink

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2024 16:06

I spent a lot of time in Clacton in my 'youth'. It was a bit down at heel in those days. But its so got so much worse - it needs investment and frankly a lot more politicians to visit and talk to people.

Farage is obviously an opportunist but populists get their foot through the door when people feel ignored and left behind. We should have learnt these lessons after the shit show of Brexit.

Heavenssakes · 04/06/2024 16:09

Allegedly, Farage specifically said, in The Times 11/02/24,
"Richard Tice probably does want me to replace him.But do I want to spend every Friday for the next 5 years in Clacton?"
