Just that!

I'll start.

I have a mixed south London accent come Surrey accent.
I basically queens English with a slight chav twang.
Born and raised in south London, moved to Surrey in my teens. It's helped my vocabulary tremendously.

What accent do you have?

Looks like it's a running theme for us south Londoners to morph our accent depending on who we're around!

Glad you got the job in the end!

We just show how adaptable and smart us Sarf London girls are, we do what needs to be done and take no crap in the doing of it lol! Underestimate us at your peril!

VolvoFan · 29/05/2024 16:40

Kentish. No mix. Although my accent can briefly change if I listen to a different accent for long enough. It's a bit annoying.

SnakesAndArrows · 29/05/2024 16:41

A blend of South Manchester and Leeds with a slight seasoning of Scouse.

WeAllHaveWings · 29/05/2024 16:42

Ayrshire/West Coast Scotland

BlueThursday · 29/05/2024 16:42

A few degrees removed from Rab C Nesbitt

South county Dublin, but the old one, not ROCK dorsh-speak.

With a northern twang as I've been in NI nearly 20 years.

This made me laugh. I'm from Dalkey (I'm old Dalkey not the runners in) and someone with a Rock 'Dort' accent once asked me directions on Castle street. I couldn't understand him!

What helped your vocabulary tremendously? Is this thread not about accents?

I went to school in Dalkey. Grin

ladybirdsanchez · 29/05/2024 16:48

Generic well-spoken southern English. No one can ever guess where I'm from!

SusanSHelit · 29/05/2024 16:49

South East Ireland (Co wicklow) with a scouse twang. It quite often confuses people, they can never place me

UsernameRedacted · 29/05/2024 16:50

Generic Northern, unless I'm talking to a close relative or my dog and then it's obvious which city I'm from.
It's a consequence of moving away and trying to blend in with the locals. My friend does it as well, you'd never guess where she's from unless you hear her with her dad or brother and then it's thick Glaswegian.

AgnesX · 29/05/2024 16:51

Scots with a bit of English. People sometimes think I'm Canadian 🤔

I was talking to a vicar a year or so ago and thought oh he's Irish, no he's Liverpudlian, oh hang on he's Scottish 😂 and yes he'd lived in all three places.

weebarra · 29/05/2024 16:56

Generic Scottish if you're not Scottish. If you are you can probably tell that it's Edinburgh-ish. I lived in a posh bit of Glasgow till I came here for uni.
I roll my r's but do pronounce my t's 😂

RobinEllacotStrike · 29/05/2024 16:57

DD said last night my accent was "dirty Kentish".
I have a NZ accent with apparently a dirty Kentish twang.
Lovely !

Wbeezer · 29/05/2024 16:59

Neutral middle class Scottish with a slight hint of Glasgow, bit like Kirsty Wark or Muriel Gray.

coxesorangepippin · 29/05/2024 17:01

Softened broad East Lancashire as lived abroad for a while

If I'm drunk/talking to relatives it all comes back without filter

😅

Westfacing · 29/05/2024 17:02

Still Scouse even after nearly 50 years in London!

I think I sound fairly neutral until I hear myself on audio Grin

South Liverpool, so a sort of soft & mellow Lennon & McCartney Smile

Sgtmajormummy · 29/05/2024 17:02

Hard to say.
Yorkshire roots with a sprinkling of Anglo Hibernian.
34 years an expat and daily use of RP from phonetic transcription.

I have a sibling who sounds the same. When we’re together DH says “It’s like listening to Sgtmajormummy in stereo!”

StripedPiggy · 29/05/2024 17:03

I grew up in a small, very working class town in Derbyshire where everyone, including me, spoke with a proper 'ay up mi duck' accent.

Then, I went off to university in the big city and started mixing with middle class people for the first time in my life. To my ears, everyone sounded dead posh, as I would probably have put it in those days.

I never consciously tried to change my accent, but it gradually softened and evolved. Then I started work with middle class colleagues and my accent continued to change. I now speak very neutrally & sound like I could come from anywhere in the Midlands. When I go back to my home town I realise I now sound nothing like the locals, which is a bit sad.

SallyWD · 29/05/2024 17:04

I'm told I speak the Queen's English and am posh. I'm not very posh though. I don't think I sound like a royal.
I grew up in the south with a middle class well spoken dad and a working class slightly cockney mum. I've never tried to speak in a posh way, I just do.

jlox · 29/05/2024 17:05

South london. I dont pronounce any T's unless its the first letter of the word. It feels really unnatural and abnormal if I try to.

IncompleteSenten · 29/05/2024 17:05

Generic northern I think.
I say grAss not graRss and bAth not baRth, that sort of thing but I don't have a strong accent that could place me more than that. My sister's husband is broad Sheffield for example and yes I mean Sheffield not south Yorkshire. Sheffield is very distinctive. I'm a bit nothing in the accent department.
