I actually prefer holidaying in the UK than abroad now. I'm in a cottage overlooking the sea on the west coast of Scotland at the moment and it's stunning. The weather isn't amazing but I don't like the heat anyway. I don't enjoy sitting on a beach or by a pool and have spent a lot of time seeing some wonderful places and museums etc in Europe, but now I've realised that there is so much of the UK that I haven't seen and know nothing about. That's my preference.

I was asked recently if I was going to have a 'proper' holiday this year by a friend who only considers a holiday if it's abroad. Her type of holiday is my idea of hell, but I respect her right to holiday how she wishes.

It is a little depressing as a thread.

Anyway
never taken hard drugs...
Don't have a tattoo (pain, irreversibility, don't like the look of them)
Never surfed....at 55 I may be too old to try.

Catsmere · 28/05/2024 09:46

Why is No thanks, I don't want to suddenly not a good enough answer on this thread?

Never taken hard drugs. I've always been way too petrified that I'd die immediately. I'll never forget the image of a young girl in the paper who'd died of a drug overdose, I think it was early 2000s maybe. She had the same name as me too so it freaked me out so much.

You're probably thinking of Leah Betts, whose death became a huge media campaign warning of the dangers of illegal drugs. The story was that it was her first Ecstasy pill, which is not true. What killed her was water: the government had warned ravers to drink lots of water so that they wouldn't dehydrate. She wasn't dancing, but drank 7 litres of water in <1.5 hours. A side effect of MDMA is that it makes it really hard to wee, so these two factors together proved lethal and she died of hyponatremia ("water intoxication"). The "Sorted" poster campaign that followed was influenced by the drinks industry, because all of a sudden people were quite happy to take a pill, chat and have fun, and were realising what a shit drug alcohol is. No one was interested in buying drinks any more. The poster campaign scared the shit out of people and then they followed it up with alcopops to win the kids back, and now here we are with a massive alcohol problem in the UK.

Anyway OP, back to you. I am half tempted to get married again and have a hen party with you as my only invitee. We will go to Spain and you will wear high heels and loads of slap, I'll get you pissed and roll you fags, and wake you up with a nice cup of tea (or coffee) in the morning, all ready to attend my wedding.

Edited to add: I'm racking my brains to think of something I've never done. I've never murdered anyone, or at least I don't think so, if I have I can't remember it.

Because you only live once, you should try some things

Womblealongwithme · 28/05/2024 09:50

I honestly don't understand why anyone would find this thread depressing. 😂 Whereas I may go abroad sometimes, or have done a bungee jump, I don't feel depressed if someone else doesn't fancy that. People can choose to live their life as they please, it's really ok.

Unless it's as a result of lack of opportunity, there's definitely a hint of some posters really thinking their choices are the only ones, on this thread.

MarkandElizabethForever · 28/05/2024 09:52

@ChickyBricky I guess you haven't seen my other posts but no I am not. It was Rachel Whitear.

ah, OK! No, haven't RTFT and sorry for the derail, I just think the LB story is quite an interesting one.

Just looked up Rachel Whitear and she was injecting heroin, which is always going to be a one-way ticket.

MarkandElizabethForever · 28/05/2024 10:10

@ChickyBricky yeah exactly, that's why it put me off ever doing hard drugs because that is such a likely outcome.

Catsmere · 28/05/2024 10:17

Why, when they're things you don't want to do and don't need to do? "You only live once" is equally "so don't waste time doing things you aren't interested in because other people look askance at you for having your own tastes and interests."

Rachel Whitear died of a heroine overdose - she was an addict and her parents gave permission for the photo of her taken when she was found with a needle in her hand.

Very sad, and a very different case to Leah Betts.

wellybellyboop · 28/05/2024 10:24

Been a bridesmaid
Been on a hen do
Got a tattoo
Been on the pill
Done any drugs or even been tempted to
Seen Pretty Woman
Had a best friend

I only went to my first ever baby shower a few months ago!

MarkandElizabethForever · 28/05/2024 10:24

@Johaanah yes I am aware...I don't get your post tbh. It was the photo of Rachel that scared me off ever trying drugs so I don't know why everyone keeps bringing up Leah. I was 8 when Leah died, I had no idea about her thankfully.

As this is a thread where people are listing 'things I've never done', no-one knows all the things the PP's HAVE done.

No-one can, or would want to do everything

So someone may list that they've never been to a friends wedding, been to an art gallery or had a tattoo. But that person may have been an Olympic competitor, climbed Mount Everest, had a book published, saved someone's life, sailed the Atlantic or given birth to quads!

We're all getting a very skewed idea of people from just listing the 'I've never's'

Frith2013 · 28/05/2024 10:26

I have never:

Taken drugs
Smoked
Had a tattoo
Believed in a god/religion
Worn makeup
Worn high heeled shoes or anything else uncomfortable
Had a man fall in love with me

Beebop1784 · 28/05/2024 09:50

I have no desire to try cocaine or heroin, have a tattoo, sing karaoke (can't bear the racket), try eating snails, run a marathon do a sky dive or do a bungee jump.

If that makes me narrow minded and unadventurous so be it.

I have however, tried weed, sung in a choir, eaten octopus, done several 5k runs and tried parascending (which was awesome).

Same. I remember Rachel too. I knew exactly who you were on about. Very vividly remember it as a teen. I was only 6 or 7 when Leah died so didn't know who she was at the time.

Well we can definitely rule out climbing Mount Everest and sailing the Atlantic for all the people who have never left the country! 🤣

Yes . . . a very long time ago!

We studied Chaucer, Dickens and a volume of poetry for English Lit O level

There are other places to go to school in the UK.

…done lots of questionable things, but the fact that I’ve never been invited to a gender reveal party tells me I’ve made the right choices in life…
