Mumsnetters seem to have hundreds of friends. I seem to average being invited to one wedding every 5 years. Not 5 in one year.

Never taken any illegal drugs (apart from cannabis when a teenager). Have always been far too afraid that I’d be the one to have a terrible reaction and mess up my life completely.

Me too.

These threads depress me.

Why

Ellemeg82 · 28/05/2024 08:43

I am 38 and I have never......

Been on a fairground/theme park ride
Lived in a house with a downstairs loo
Been on social media
Swimmed in the sea
Read Harry Potter
Drank tea or coffee
Smoked a cigarette
Had any dental work/fillings

CeeJay81 · 28/05/2024 08:44

@RampantIvy I agree. Not everyone has a big social network. The odd friends I have, were either married before i knew them or arent intending to get married.

Catsmere · 28/05/2024 08:46

I have never learned to swim, never smoked, never been drunk, never taken illegal drugs, never owned a dog, never been arrested, never had a relationship, never had any form of cosmetic procedure - and never felt the slightest desire to do any of them.

BouleDeSuif · 28/05/2024 08:47

Been married
Been proposed to
Bought a house
Bought a car

Womblealongwithme · 28/05/2024 08:50

I would only feel sorry for someone if they felt like they were missing out. Apart from going to a wedding, most of these things are things that people can do if they want, so I presume that they don't want to. If someone desperately wanted to go abroad then they would probably try to find a way to make that happen.

I don't feel sorry for someone who chooses to live their life differently to me, that's kind of patronising.

FortunataTagnips · 27/05/2024 21:00

I think it’s the lack of curiosity in some cases. I can totally understand doing something once and deciding it’s not for you, or not getting a chance to do something because of circumstances.
But to choose to rule out trying something that’s non-risky and fairly straightforward just seems odd and a bit sad.

I agree. Though I will never ever vote Tory or had Botox. I think I have done everything else.

Mumsnet IS social media 😆

My friend has never been abroad and has no desire to. They spend every weekend and holiday rock climbing because that's their thing and what they want to spend their money on. Different strokes and all that.

Rocks also exist abroad.

But isn't it subjective?

I've done lots of things in my life, including most of the things listed in the OP. It's not shocking to me that other people choose to live their lives differently. Non-risky and straightforward to one person may feel different to someone else. They may be curious about other things that you are not, if you know what I mean?

This is true. But I do think never having been to a wedding is at the extreme end of experience aversion!

Thanks for clearing that up. 😂 They don't want to do it abroad, they want to do it here. That's perfectly ok.

Well I'm probably not the best person to comment on that because I hate weddings and find them incredibly dull. 😆

KnitnNatterAuntie · 28/05/2024 09:02

I have never been in the loft in my house . . . I've lived here for 15 years. The loft can only be accessed by a stepladder on a small landing at the top of a very steep staircase and it scares me😮

zaxxon · 28/05/2024 09:04

Wow I've done nearly everything on this thread... apart from bungee jump, break a bone and vote Tory.

I've never:

Bought an expensive handbag
Flown any class other than economy
Been east of Budapest or west of LA
Bought a lottery ticket
Successfully whistled a tune
Drunk sambuca (or have I?)
Balanced a cheque book
Worn a diamond
Had a bird land on my hand

Why should one have to try things one knows are of zero interest? I know full well I'd hate being stuck on a cruise ship, or visit anywhere in the tropics, or smoke a cigarette (I detest smoking), or a host of other things. There's nothing odd or sad about knowing one's own mind and not doing crap because other people think one should share their tastes.

CoffeeLover90 · 28/05/2024 09:09

Never have I ever
Bought a house
Bought a car
Been abroad
Drawn on eyebrows
Had anything cosmetic
Ate kale
Worn heels

Some I plan on doing.

I’m not saying one should try everything. I know without having one that tattoos aren’t my thing, for example.
But it seems sad to exclude the experiences that most of us have, like leaving the country at least once or going to a wedding.

Why does most people doing those things make it sad not to?

I don't see the appeal of going to weddings. Been to two, a decade apart, and that was plenty. I would have traveled more if I was in Britain and Europe was so close, and have done five trips abroad, which from Australia is no small thing, but so what if people don't care to? It's not like Britain hasn't multitudes of places of interest and significance.

I've never been abroad and have no plans to

I have family scattered around the UK and enjoy visiting them. I have toured Scotland, the Lake District, Yorkshire, the Norfolk Broads, Wales, visited the Scilly Islands and I still feel that there's more to explore

There are still cathedrals, museums & NT properties I've not been to and I would love to visit Belfast

I have just had a holiday staying in a cabin in a forest . . . it was wonderful and I really enjoyed it

Sorry if this sounds boring to some people but I'm quite content . . .

RampantIvy · 28/05/2024 09:34

I like holidaying in the UK just as much as going abroad.

Exactly! Britain has so much to see and do. That doesn't sound at all dull to me.

Why? How do you know you enjoy UK holidays more if you've never been anywhere else?
