Money you may as well have set on fire

Like you literally got NOTHING for it.
DD wanted to go to drama club for ages. Loved the first term. Asked if she wanted to do the second term. No sooner had a I sent the money across she came and told me she didn't want to do it and has been moaning and tantruming about it ever since. £90 completely wasted. I'm feeling pretty salty about it atm. Help me feel better about it with your wasted money stories?

YY @ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea Umbrellas bags books. sarongs scarves and i remember Eve having full size No 7 freebies

I had a Northern Rock account and got the free shares, when they floated. Quite nice, I thought, getting 3 cheques a year for £30 - £40. The price of the shares rose steadily, along with what they paid out.

At some point, I was offered a half price deal and bought £5,000 worth. They still kept climbing in value and I was working in Sardinia, when I saw that the were over £12 and I decided to sell them; it would have made me £8 per share.

I got off the plane home and saw that they'd gone bust.

On the sunglasses theme, I had a pair of second hand Ray Bans, £40 in the early 90s. I was a skint student. I was on the Metro and it did an emergency stop, throwing an old couple out of their seats. His arm was evidently broken and her scalp was lacerated all round one side of her head.

I went to help and a nurse told me what to do. After the ambulance had come for them, I went back to my seat and they'd gone from the top of my bag.

@Swanbeauty Hounslow was not your best option.....
There's a website called opendoor, I tend to book via there in areas I don't know.

@Swanbeauty wow Hounslow and Luton, combination of champions Shockno wonder you had a bad time.

There are many, many amazing curry places in London - any of the Dishooms for starters. There's one just by Oxford Circus in Kingsley court, Battersea power station, King's Cross, Covent garden - in fact these are all good places to visit anyway.

I dropped a Charlotte Tilbury blush I was half way through using a few months ago and it shattered into a million pieces on impact with the floor. Finally treated myself to a new one yesterday. £35. Got home, opened the small box it came in, it slipped straight out and... shattered into a million pieces on impact with the floor 😣

In case something similar happens again, or just as extra info:
It might be possible to re-press blushes. Take the crumbling bits, add alcohol (such as from the pharmacy), cover it with something clean - like a plastic freezer bag bit - and press down with a heavy item; keep it pressed down for a couple of days until the alcohol evaporates.

Alternatively, broken blushes and shadows can be milled with a mortar (or something from the kitchen with similar function) and used as loose powder.

I don't have the exact steps at hand, but there are many DIY-guides onlines, if you're interested. YMMV, because it depends on the ingredients of the product how well this works, but if you otherwise would have to throw it out, it might be worth a try.

This. Had to do it with a Fenty beauty bronzer. It didn’t look as perfect as it did before I smashed it. But was perfect and still using it now

650 paid last Dec. to 'Loveholidays' as a deposit on a trip to Thailand in Jan. I then accidentally paid a second deposit due to a new credit card plus the
remaining balance due. I have been battling since Jan. to have LH return
the extra deposit paid. Today alone emails sent variously to info@LH, office@LH,
advice@LH, and accounts@LH, were all bounced back to me with no reply. Fuming.

Don't you end up with a house full of wasps?🤔

Well.. yes. But as they're practically microscopic it doesn't matter, less than half a mm!

I've got some but we've only just started so I haven't really seen results yet.

Have you overpaid the total holiday value. If so and you booked it on a credit card just do a chargeback. Include all documentation plus emails showing your efforts to get in touch with LH. Nothing worse than chasing up shit like that

Poppyg123 · 30/05/2024 18:49

Excellent advice, thank you so much. Meanwhile, might I recommend that mums netters give Loveholidays a wide berth.

Aliflowers · 31/05/2024 14:37

@Poppyg123 Ive done a chargeback twice and easy process both times. Once was actually Ryanair when they cancelled flights due to covid and then tried to give me a voucher (with an end date) in the middle if a pandemic

just dont leave it too long to claim as I think your covered for 120 days from the initial charge

Poppyg123 · 31/05/2024 18:06

Aliflowers, thank you. My credit card company have informed me that the Chargeback process is complete at their end ,and so there is no reason for Loveholidays to retain my overpayment. Their continual ignoring and bouncing back of my emails however, means that no progress is being made. So frustrating !

I think with a chargeback, the credit (or debit) card company give you the money back and claim from the shop separetely? So if the credit card says that the chargeback process is complete, they should have refunded you. I have a shop that someone tried to do a credit card chageback against. I had to prove to the credit card company that I had provided the goods. Once I had proved this to the CC company, the chargeback was closed. If I hadn't been able to prove it, the CC company would have refunded the customer and clawed back the payment from me via my merchant payment account. MSE has useful info on their website about how the system works.

Almost a grand spent on tropical fish including the equipment and food actually probably more than a grand in total, and they inevitably dies within a few months and no one wanted the aquarium or parts so that all went in the bin.
Also lots of plants have died in my care sadly despite me doing everything I can and spending lots on food and stuff

Vodkamummy · 01/06/2024 18:01

Not a wasted money story, but a thought, could you sell it to another drama mum that hasn't paid for their child's term yet?

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 01/06/2024 18:01

My wedding, tutor driving course for my XH

DBD1975 · 01/06/2024 18:08

I must have spent thousands over the years trying to find the perfect mascara for my view short eyelashes, nothing has ever made them look longer or thicker, they always just look a clumpy mess but still my quest continues 😂.

BeepDeep · 01/06/2024 19:24

🦮 Dog things. I was so naive/stupid when we bought our puppy that I shelled out good money to get her registered on the pedigree registry. We then had her neutered a few months later before she hit doggy puberty. Absolutely zero point to her being registered as pedigree!
Also - pet insurance. What a scam. And when she was about 5 the vet said there was a possibility that a little lump she had on her back could potentially turn cancerous, so I paid a fortune to have it removed under general anaesthetic, the full works. (Guess what - I still had to pay hundreds despite her being insured!) A year after she recovered from the op, the little lump grew back. This time I just ignored it - and it never caused a moment of trouble, she died of old age at 15. Incredibly, I continued paying pet insurance until they finally hiked up the price to £90 a month and I finally came to my senses….
By the way I absolutely loved my dog, I don’t resent her in the slightest - only my own foolishness for paying for things I didn’t need to be paying for!

EasyJet tickets before lockdown, couldn’t work out how to claim.
75 euro fine for not validating my bus ticket in Italy. I put it in the wrong way round.

rolloverbeethoven · 01/06/2024 19:44

Not a huge amount, but annoying. I make a few bob on sports betting, and thought I'd diversify to politics. I know everyone thinks that Labour will win, but I thought naah, Conservatives always get in, so I put a fiver on them winning the election. The very next date Rishi came out with the grand idea of national service... 😕

Car developed a mysterious engine fault. Official garage struggled to diagnose it but eventually settled on needing a new catalytic converter. Cost us £3,000 but we paid it because the car is the only one we can fit a double buggy and three kids in.

Mechanic took the car for a spin once it had been fixed. Minutes later the engine light came on...
