Like you literally got NOTHING for it.
DD wanted to go to drama club for ages. Loved the first term. Asked if she wanted to do the second term. No sooner had a I sent the money across she came and told me she didn't want to do it and has been moaning and tantruming about it ever since. £90 completely wasted. I'm feeling pretty salty about it atm. Help me feel better about it with your wasted money stories?

I was only thinking about this the other day, wasted money over the years on things. I am trying to cut back on mailing / Posting costs, as they are getting very expensive now. some of the things iv posted could have not bothered with and saved a lot more money over the years. Things like physcial books. where as now I try to get Kindle Deals. that work out soo much cheaper.

I still buy old-fashioned books and haven't yet branched out to a Kindle, but it never ceases to amaze me how similarly-priced they are on Amazon.

How could it be fair that I might have a book printed on actual paper - all that ink on maybe 300 pages - and packaged and delivered to me for, say, £15; when for me to click and automatically download a file from their server, without any human having to do anything at all (other than upload it a single time for all purchasers, of course) might cost £13?

£240 on a 4 x 60 min pack PT session. As I'm pregnant we agreed to aim for 45 min sessions and make up the rest of time on a 5th session.

Had 2 sessions then couldn't make the 3rd due to a migraine that I couldn't shift, so lost the session.

Just before I went on holiday, she told me she was leaving the gym and 'hoped' we could fit in the final session, which I couldn't. She wouldn't refund me the final session. We tried to fit it in at another gym but my son got hand foot and mouth, so I warned her and she refused to see me, offered to refund half the final session (£30). I asked if we could instead to £45 given I was owed for the 45 min vs 60 min sessions.

She totally ghosted me, wouldn't rearrange the final session and wouldn't even give me the £30 she offered.

In short, I paid £240 x2 PT sessions of 45 min.

Didn’t you repair the cable? https://www.diy.com/departments/lawn-mower-cable-repair-kit-2-pin-rubber-flex-connector-10a-amp-orange/5055329056608_BQ.prd

Best thing is, next time you accidentally cut the cable you only need to rewire one side not two!

I know somebody (very well indeed) who once did this, and repaired the mower cable as above.

I My friend actually finds it more convenient than before to be able to disconnect it without unplugging it from the mains, to safely clear out the grass build-up from the blade.

Fucking conservatory blinds that cost thousands and still for damp and mouldy. Fucking Sandersons.

Sanderson's were awful to us too!!

curiouslycoy · 27/05/2024 17:38

Also lost a car key and to get the new car key programming system re done was £700!!

No idea where it went, must have fallen out my bag one day as I used to take the keys to commute to and from work for the house key only.

We then separated car keys and house keys after that. We take public transport to work...

On that subject also had a car stolen, insurance covered but needed to buy a new baby car seat, several hundred pounds and also had buggy extenders in there, £60 to replace.

Tyre recently blew.... several hundreds. Cars are expensive!

Stupid Miele dishwasher that was an absolute lemon. After 4.5 years of nursing it along with snotty letters to Miele HQ and regular engineer callouts, the pump & seal have finally died. I'm getting a Bosch - no more Miele, ever again.

We bought a Miele dishwasher a couple of years back - but the guarantee didn't cover the baby slug that crawled into it and fried the fuse board . New fuse board will cost more than a new basic dishwasher - so we no longer have a Miele .

VAT on ebooks. Plus the vast cost of running servers now. Seems counterintuitive but a physical book is much cheaper - financially and environmentally.

Kindle books are only normally a similar price to printed books when they are first released. I've been caught out a few times by pre-ordering to continue a series I've started whereas if I'd waited it would have been free on Kindle unlimited. I suppose it depends on what you read and how much - I read a lot and am normally happy with the series which are included under Kindle unlimited (I think it's £9.99 a month and they are loaned like a library). I only occasionally buy books outside of this . Alternatively if you don't read enough to make the kindle unlimited worth it , there are often deals at 99p per kindle download .

Good point - I hadn't thought of the VAT. It does seem like a basic case of government not catching up with modern technology, though, if they charge VAT on physical books but not the same thing on a screen - especially considering that the latter might be more accessible to people with various disabilities.

Ah, yes - maybe that's just me as a non-Kindle user not appreciating the normal charging structure for users who are!

Is it maybe like the outrageous stated costs for a single mobile call, whereas the vast majority of people pay for a monthly contract and get unlimited included calls, so don't need to care about how much they use it?

Revitive. I couldn't get used to it.

I am rather smug about the gym membership. My council charge £56 PER YEAR for seniors.

London is big, with lots of different neighborhoods.

Luton isn't actually London.

There are suburbs outside the centre which are beautiful and the centre also has a mix of good and bad parts.

Sounds like you went to the bad bits, but can't really think everywhere else is the same.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 27/05/2024 22:47

Mine were/are clothes and house stuff.
Got a friend who offered me her trades discount at a furniture shop. It was as if I'd been wound up, bought so much stuff at a panic in case it sold out.
Now I have furniture that is too big for our house and most is in the garage as no more space. A good 12k for stuff that should be in a royal home.

Same for clothes and shoes. Once bought a jacket, went to put it in the wardrobe and there was an identical one still with tags on.
Took it back and told the truth when asked if anything was wrong with it. Not sure she believed me.

Found a dress I liked, paid £800 for the same dress in different colours. Wore the first one and caught sight of myself in a mirror whilst out, didn't suit me one bit. Noe have 6 dresses I can't return.

I dropped a Charlotte Tilbury blush I was half way through using a few months ago and it shattered into a million pieces on impact with the floor. Finally treated myself to a new one yesterday. £35. Got home, opened the small box it came in, it slipped straight out and... shattered into a million pieces on impact with the floor 😣

I sold Fit Bit on Ebay for £45.

Can I find it? NOPE.

I THINK I accidentally hoovered it up as I remember hearing something and I have since found the charger in the same location.

To be honest, if I think about it, I would say...the vast majority of money wasted on clothes, gadgets and takeaway food, I may as well have burned that, I reckon we are talking about £10,000-£15,000.

Also the money I spend on the rent and service charge portion of my shared ownership flat. £360 a month.

I've just re-read and realised that I wrote that entirely the wrong way around - I knew what I meant, though!!

gratefulbutsad · 28/05/2024 07:12

@Swanbeauty you went to Windsor, Islington and Luton and don't get why people want to live in London. Well, Windsor is definitely not London, you mush know that.

Luton is in Bedfordshire. It's also one of the well known less desirable areas, most people people know it as somewhere to avoid.

Where did you go for your curry?

Really London is a great place to live, lots of young people live in Clapham, Balham, Tooting, Wimbledon, Dulwich, Greenwich, Islington, etc. Not Luton, lol.

Paid £5,500 to a builder recommended through facebook (in hindsight, most likely recommended by his mates). The main part of the job was to lay porcelain paving slabs to a path and patio area. After a few days that they started coming loose as you walked on them, because he had laid them as though they were concrete or stone slabs (which is a different technique - and using that same technique on porcelain means they won’t stick). I later discovered that he had realise that something wasn’t right , and attempted a temporary fix by sticking them down with a little bit of sealant here and there as you see in the photo. Needless to say that didn’t last five minutes, but by then he had scarpered🤬

It took me three years to find a builder willing to lift and relay all of the slabs properly…..and that corrective work cost me a further £6,500!!!!! Absolutely gutted😞

Money you may as well have set on fire

Paid a non-refundable £125 for an interview, which at the time was the speediest way to get a passport renewal for DS....only for DS to read out the expiry date of his present passport - which still had years to run. DD's passport had run out and I just presumed DS's had too but I'd renewed it for a school trip then forgotten. Cancelled the appointment about 30mins after booking it!

They must have changed the rules! Years ago, a week before we were leaving on a long US trip I couldn't find my passport, it wasn't in 'the travel box'. Eventually I phoned the Passport office and made an appointment for the following day but they took no money. After putting the phone down naturally I found it in the wrong box, I phoned the PO to cancel, they were pleased as many didn't phone but didn't turn up, maybe that's why they took payment on booking!

I sympathise with the sunglasses one, I have managed to break three pairs of Raybans over the years, my very cheap ones survive. Raybans are my only indulgence too, I'm terrible at spending money on myself, drove my late OH bonkers.

I have a three year old pair that came free with Tatler. Still going strong

Oh many of these , but as my late MIL said Fool me once fool me twice. Which I think means I'll make a mistake once but not twice. Bit like as Oscar Wilde said - to lose one parent is unfortunate - to lose two is careless . But all sunk costs so not worth losing sleep over . Anything you can sell if you get some money back that's fine.

and @ scribbling pixie I had so many things eaten by moths - there is a thing to can get from Lakeland or amazon where you can spray the clothes with moth repellent. Otherwise I have had the house sprayed by Rentokill and may have to do it again. I hate the little fuckers.

For the moths, dragonfli do parasitic wasps that eat/kill the little bastards. Takes a few courses because of the life cycle, but we found them to be extremely effective.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/05/2024 22:49

I had some brilliant free gifts with magazines over the years @JenniferBooth . They always did them in the summer . I've got a couple of sarongs I still use and my favourite was a kaftan style top, from Red I think .
