I’m Scottish. I’ll vote for anyone to try to stop the woefully inadequate SNP getting in again.

Are you aware this is a Westminster GE, so the SNP are not, never have been, and never will be "in"?

FatOaf · 25/05/2024 05:11

The original mess was down to the last Labour government. That resulted in Austerity.

No, it was down to banks. Austerity was a conscious decision by Cameron & Osborne to punish the most vulnerable for the irresponsibility of bankers. It was the first step to destruction of the economy that would later be compounded by the idiocy of Brexit.

I don’t know. I am in Scotland. Can’t bring myself to vote Tory, Labour or SNP. Awful. All of them.

Me too. I just have no idea what to do. This GE is so important but no idea how to vote.

Lib Dem.

What are their actual policies though? My local Lib Dem’s maintain that there is no such thing as a woman. That’s all I know.

It's a tactical vote. My area had always been Lib Dem until the last election when a Tory candidate got in. There wasn't much in it.

LondonLass61 · 25/05/2024 08:27

It will take 10-15 years to even start repairing the damage as this country is so broken from the tories and their failed neoliberalism. We also need Proportional Representation but that will take time, so for now it has to be the 'least worst' which is Labour.
I also think that it's time to start talking about abolishing the monarchy.

Cocopogo · 25/05/2024 08:32

Labour. I voted Tories last time and bitterly regret that.
Being a keyworker in the pandemic and watching them throw out billions of pounds to everyone else to sit at home was sickening.

placemats · 25/05/2024 10:03

Labour. I'll be campaigning and on the doorstep.

The original mess was down to the last Labour government. That resulted in Austerity. The current mess is a combination of Brexit ( for which the public are responsible for) and closely followed by a global pandemic the likes of which no one has lived through. And to add insult to injury we have the global unrest due to Ukraine and Palestine. I seriously think that many mumsnetters stopped following current affairs when the first lockdown started.
The current PM made sure that many of you were able to maintain your lifestyles through the huge handouts. If they hadn’t this country would have been seriously f*#ked.
How have people forgotten so quickly? The entertainment and hospitality industry has still not recovered fully, so many small businesses were lost.

I suppose if you are not a business owner then you have no idea just how difficult 2020/21 was. You all sat at home being paid. Businesses rely on their workforce to make money, if they are not working no money is made. The government paid your wages not the business.

I worry about how little the general public understands simple economics.

I would love to see a hung parliament with a coalition government. Maybe while the politicians are locking horns the civil service can quietly go about running the country.

The original mess was down to the global banking crisis.

DanceMumTaxi · 25/05/2024 11:16

I’m just hoping to god the tories don’t get in again. I can see why people voted them in years ago after Gordon Brown, wanted a change etc, but I cannot for the life of me understand people voting for them now. The country is in an utter mess. They can’t be allowed to keep going.

Newheadche · 26/05/2024 15:22

Labour!!! Or anything else than those Tories basts!

Nokolite · 05/06/2024 11:01

Genuine question to all Labour voters - aren’t you worried Starmer will cripple your family finances even more? He pretty much said that in his statement. I just find it baffling you all want to vote for a party that is open and honest to adding more taxes to working families. Unless you’re on benefits then I guess there’s nothing to worry about?

GameOfJones · 05/06/2024 11:16

I honestly do not know.

Traditionally, I'm Conservative leaning on the economy and defence and left-leaning on education and the NHS.

I really worry about Labour getting in, their stance on gender identity and I don't think Starmer fills me with confidence on the world stage when there is so much global unrest at the moment. Plus schools and hospitals in Labour run Wales are an absolute shit show according to my family members living and working there.

But I'm not sure I can forgive the Conservatives for partygate after I was sat at home in lockdown rather than with my dying relative.

I'll be waiting to read the manifestos and making my decision then but I just feel that whoever I vote for I'll be doing it with a heavy heart!

Maddy70 · 05/06/2024 11:17

Nope not worried at all. I don't receive any benefits apart from child benefit. I can't wait to vote Labour. i appreciate that if we all pay a fair amount of tax, society benefits as a whole.

In terms of benefits though, you know that a lot of people who claim benefits do actually work as well? It's just the tories have caused a cost of living crisis, so those honest hardworking families can't make ends meet now with their stagnant wages so they get topped up with UC.

I work full time and have a disability for which i should be entitled to PIP, but the tories have made it pretty much impossible to actually get benefits you're entitled so i haven't applied. The mental health support i would need (to have a DWP employee rake over every element of my life and then turn me down, leading to me needing to appeal and go through it all again) doesn't exist on the NHS - thank the tories again. There are hundreds of thousands of disabled people in work who would benefit from pip, are entitled to it, and can't access it because of the tories. Getting more disabled people into work would mean paying more in benefits to support them to access work, but there would be a benefit to the economy overall but disabled people have been demonised and othered by the right wing for too long.

I want disabled people and those on benefits to be able to play a full and active role in society. If that means more tax, go for it. But actually, there is plenty of money sloshing around. The tories found millions to give away in COVID loans and useless PPE supplied by their mates, for example.

Disabled people and those on benefits aren't the reason your taxes are going up. The tories draining as much as they can out of the public purse and decades of wastage has caused it.

I'm on benefits and you're absolutely right, life is super easy with zero worries and can only get better under Labour 🙄

LakeTiticaca · 22/05/2024 19:14

There is no party at the moment that I would be prepared to vote at the moment. We need a strong leader who will listen to the British people and at the moment nobody is

“The British people” are not a homogenous blob. What you want might be quite different to what I want. Voters generally find the party or candidate that they think aligns with their views and wants. No party is going to give all the people all they want.

And Labour.

FatOaf · 05/06/2024 11:39

No. I'm far more worried about losing my job if the Conservatives are re-elected and continue to wreck the economy and all our institutions while demanding more tax to put directly into the pockets of their financial backers.

I just find it baffling you all want to vote for a party that is open and honest to adding more taxes to working families. Unless you’re on benefits then I guess there’s nothing to worry about?

I'm not on benefits, and never have been. I believe in everyone making a contribution to society. This means everyone should work, regardless of how rich their parents/spouses are or how much property they own, and everyone above a certain income level should pay to provide essential services for the benefit of society, regardless of how clever their accountants are.

You can't blame Labour for the past 14 years - even if you want to then clearly the Conservatives are still unfit to govern if they haven't managed to sort it out given how long they've been in power. The Tories introduced the Brexit vote with utter irresponsibility to sort out their own internecine feuding.

newnamethanks · 10/06/2024 23:29

@Angrymum22 I refer you to the Global Financial Crisis - Rishi made his fortune from betting against the pound during this - as you appear not to have heard of it. Global. Everyone suffered. Not the fault of Labour or even of Jeremy Corbyn but the fault of financial instruments dreamed up by people who saw they could manufacture money from thin air by exploiting gullible people's ignorance and greed, an excellent combination for any conman to exploit. Trump is still at it.

Lib Dem. It's between LD and Tory here

How quickly people forget what it was like under Blair (Labour for anyone who doesn't know)
He started the mess.

Started what mess? Blair's mess was the Iraq war, which admittedly has contributed to the volume of refugees, although multiple wars since then have also contributed.

The rest of the UK's mess is mostly down to Brexit, corruption, mismanagement, and the message from the top that people don't have to obey the law and that there is no difference between truth and lies.

TravellingSpoon · 11/06/2024 12:11

My head is saying Labour to get the Tories out.

My heart is saying Liberal Democrats, as they are the party I have voted more most of my adult life.
