has deodorant suddenly become a bit crap?

Have they changed the ingredients...Sure deodorant doesn't seem to be cutting the mustard....

Yup. They have definitely messed around with the formulation, probably in an effo r t to push us to buy the more expensive box stuff. Sanex is the worst culprit and I seem to recall someone saying they've taken out the aluminium, which stops the sweat. I now find soft and gentle to be the most effective, ' cheap' roll on.

Yes had to stop using Dove because it wasn't working as well and I kept getting ingrown hair lumps, switched to a natural deodorant and it's stopped. I'm only mid 30s so not sure it would be hormonal change, I read that Dove had to change its manufacturing process or ingredients when the Ukraine war kicked off.

Yes a lot of deodorant was being made in Russia before the war, including most of the stick deodorant which is why it became impossible to find for a while. So would make sense that it may have changed.

Caffeineislife · 20/05/2024 13:09

I had to dump sanex when they changed the ingredients. I noticed the Dove I bought recently isn't as good. Back to Sure 72 hr stuff for now which seems to work. When I had a huge hormone imbalance post partum I used the sure stick stuff and that was brilliant.

I have found washing my armpits every morning with soap rather than shower gel seems to work better at keeping the stank down.

MistyRoseBlue · 20/05/2024 13:43

I use men's unscented deodorant as it's stronger

jay55 · 20/05/2024 14:02

Sanex added some deodorants to the range that looked like the packaging for antiperspirants and caught a few of us out, there was a thread a while ago,

This latest batch of hot weather seems to have raised the stink so I think multiple people are having the same issue. It was so noticeable at the weekend I got quite paranoid it was me too.

That’s a good idea

TheSandgroper · 20/05/2024 14:44

I gave up using underarm roll ons in my twenties because I was working outside. I couldn’t see the point in every cell of my skin being wide open and sweating except the two inches of my armpits. I did use a squirt of perfume in the mornings.

Some years later, I was working inside and we would get into each others personal space. As it happened we got onto the subject and I said I didn’t use underarm stuff and colleague said “but you don’t smell!” No, I don’t.

I am clean and continue with a squirt of Crabtree’s lavender in the morning and am perfectly happy. Gluey stuff in the armpits, I decided, is an advertisers and sales execs dream. I don’t pander to them.

TheSandgroper · 20/05/2024 14:46

Adding further, if I felt I was particularly horrible after a day working like a navvy outside in the Australian summer, some bicarb on my fingertips cleaned me nicely.

dottiedodah · 20/05/2024 14:52

I used Sure and it works well for a few months then doesnt seem to work at all! Same with many I think .I am using Vaseline non perfumed now .Will have to see if the same happens!

muddyford · 20/05/2024 14:55

I'm using men's Mitchum blue ice. Was on offer in Sainsbury's a few weeks ago, going to Tesco tomorrow as now on offer there. Takes a while to dry but otherwise OK.

user1469207397 · 20/05/2024 14:57

Found the same with Sure - I’ve used their roll on for the past 40 years.
Picked up the 72 hour one by mistake and that was even worse. I’ve never been a sweaty person and hormones should be balanced as well past the menopause but the last few months these antiperspirants don’t seem effective at all. They take so much longer to dry on the skin too.

Makemydaypunk · 20/05/2024 14:59

I find the roll on stuff just doesn’t dry anymore, my armpits stay wet for ages even if it’s advertised as quick dry. I’ve switched to mens deodorant now which is much better and more effective.

AddictedtoStarmix · 20/05/2024 15:00

So glad to have found this thread.
I have been finding most deodorants less effective recently and wasn't sure if it was me or the product.
Will try the men's unscented to see if it works as I hate feeling sweaty and sticky.

StarsHideYourFir3s · 20/05/2024 15:04

They seem to have changed the formula of the Sure Cotton Dry roll-on, which is my favourite one.

Heartbreaktuna · 20/05/2024 15:12

Mitchum stopped working for me around a year ago. Very frustrating

BigDahliaFan · 20/05/2024 15:21

Thanks for all the ideas I've bought some of the dove someone suggested up thread. Glad it's not just me. Off to start a thread about cheesy feet - gosh, I'm a catch.

OP posts:
Citrusandginger · 20/05/2024 15:37

Quite relieved to find this thread as I had been thinking my pits were getting mildly sweaty at nighttime and I've been post menopausal for a few years.

Annoyingly, I have used Mitchum roll on successfully and happily for ever and a day. Bloody Russians.

I don't agree that we're all getting skankier though. I still have at least one shower a day.

usernother · 20/05/2024 15:48

I was thinking that my latest Mitchum isn't as good as it normally is. Glad it's not just me.

LancashireSquirrel · 20/05/2024 15:59

Wow I thought this was just me. I was just thinking to myself earlier how I need to change deodorants. Mitchum has always been my go-to but I'm sweaty very quickly for some reason!

Guavafish1 · 20/05/2024 16:03

very expensive now. I'm not sureabout the quality as I only use Aldi brand deodorant.

LizzieBennett73 · 20/05/2024 16:03

I've tried all sorts recently and nothing stops me sweating. Glad it's not just me - I fell for the Sure 72 hour thing and I was damp under the arms 45 mins later after walking the dogs.

Stinksmum · 20/05/2024 16:14

Another one using Mitchum, it was good for a bit more protection and used to be great. But the last 6 months or so I've ended the day a bit pongy. I thought it was just me. Looks like I'll have to find a replacement.

MistyRoseBlue · 20/05/2024 16:46

@BakedTattie

I find mend socks are thickets and better quality too . They are broader than women socks but my feet are broad anyway .

tillytomtiny · 20/05/2024 17:08

Ahh OP, I felt the same at the start of the year and completely ditched my usual Sure deo. For whatever reason, be it hormones or something else, I started to really pong so took the leap and invested in that Wild deo (you can get it in Tesco and also Boots)... Best money I've spent and so glad I made the swap.

If not Wild I know there's other alternatives like Fussy?

https://www.wearewild.com/
https://www.getfussy.com/

I've not tried Fussy personally but I love love love my Wild one (the sea salt and cotton one is lovely!) and honestly, I've never felt so fresh - even convinced all the mums at playgroup to jump on the bandwagon. It takes a week or so for your pits to adjust but I've not looked back since changing.
