How did Ollie get no points in the public vote for Eurovision?

I don’t mean ‘because people didn’t like his song’, I mean, literally how do the voting points work?

I’ve googled and not found an answer. It’s not percentages as some people got a few hundred.

Is it like 1 point per thousand public votes (or whatever the numbers are ) and he didn’t reach 1000 votes from any single country?

I did hear it explained on the TV on Sunday morning and it totally made sense at the time but I can't remember to explain it.

I like it though. I think it's really catchy.

Shade17 · 13/05/2024 21:36

I may be wrong but as I understand it each country gives 1-12 points for the public vote(Graham Norton certainly gave the UK public vote result like that). I’m guessing Ollie didn’t make the top 12 most popular in any country.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/05/2024 21:37

they count ALL the votes received from each country.
the song that got the highest votes from each country gets 12, second gets 10, 3rd gets 8 and then all the way down to 1. So apparently Olly came lower than 10th place in each country (as there are 10 different types of point available)

at least, this is my understanding

Top 10, as there are no 9 or 11 points. 1-8, 10 and 12 only.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/05/2024 21:39

Oh and then they add all the numbers for each song in each country up

Gingernaut · 13/05/2024 21:39

It was shit and he is talentless

As the UK didn't score in the top ten in any country, we got nothing in the public voting round

Remember, countries can't vote for themselves

SpringKitten · 13/05/2024 21:40

@Gingernaut you stole the words right out of my mouth

PossumintheHouse · 13/05/2024 21:40

Each country's public gets to award either 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12 points to their favourite act. If your favourite act isn't in the top 10 for said country, you don't receive points. That's it.

LakeTiticaca · 13/05/2024 21:42

He doesn't like Britain. Hates our Union flag. Called it "divisive and nationalistic"
So perhaps people felt disinclined to vote or him since he doesn't seem to like the country he was representing
Oh and his song was shit 🤣

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2024 21:42

I’m none the wiser yet people. Grin

I don’t understand all the countries like Isreal getting 500 points from the public vote and Switzerland 200 or whatever it was.

Bambinomino · 13/05/2024 21:42

Tbh I'm English going into it blind and had no idea who he was, and I thought it was a crap song.

We voted for Croatia and Estonia.

I really don’t think people in other countries would pick up on this

the song was a bit shit, but it was surprising that it was the only song that got 0 from the public. Some were far worse!

This. Why anyone thought putting forward someone with a shit song, weak vocals and a set featuring men in bondage gear simulating sex in a grubby toilet was a good idea, I have no idea

Everyone is talking about the jury vote which is 12, 10 etc.

But like you say, some countries had hundreds.

The audience in each country vote for their favourite songs out of the 25(?) they had to choose from.

The votes are added up, in each country.

The song that got the most votes in a country gets 12 points from that country. The second most popular gets ten points from that country. And so on!

ODFOx · 13/05/2024 21:47

I quite like him but this was the weakest song I've ever heard from him, plus the staging was seedy at a time when the mood was to celebrate diversity he presented a song with semi naked men humping in a dirty men's shower room. I'm actually pleased that at a time of positivity around diversity, this mediocre effort from someone so talented was shut down. It was embarrassing.

Because loads of pro Israel people voted and so they would have got lots of 12s and 10a which across 37 countries tots up easily

with regards to Israel specifically this is helpful

The public vote allocated numbers in the same way. Not sure why it’s so hard to understand?

user18 · 13/05/2024 21:48

It was rubbish and the performance was almost designed to alienate people (which is really saying something for Eurovision). DS is gay and watched it at a Eurovision drinks party. He said they all thought it was embarrassing. I’m not sure who it was aimed at really

Jesus Christ.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/05/2024 21:50

The one difference jury/vs public is they don’t go through each country’s preferences individually. They just add them all up and give them in one go. But it’s essentially the same system presented differently
the overall number of votes on offer both by public and jury are the same.

I think they were too invested in the choreography to the detriment of his vocals as he doesn't usually sound that weak. I was surprised. Remember Bardo though? If they had stood still to sing they might have won 😂
