How did Ollie get no points in the public vote for Eurovision?

I don’t mean ‘because people didn’t like his song’, I mean, literally how do the voting points work?

I’ve googled and not found an answer. It’s not percentages as some people got a few hundred.

Is it like 1 point per thousand public votes (or whatever the numbers are ) and he didn’t reach 1000 votes from any single country?

So how come some countries got hundreds of points?

Because 37 countries each have their own public vote, where 12 is the highest score.

Guys, you are all wrong. I am talking about the PUBLIC vote.

It's all explained here, it's not hard to find

EarringsandLipstick · 13/05/2024 21:52

No, OP is correct about the public vote, which is separate & distinct from the jury vote.

Surely that was evident if you watched the competition?

Because when you have 37(?) countries voting, the points earned per country can add up!

GellerYeller · 13/05/2024 21:53

I remember Bardo’s song but not the choreography! Votes here for Croatia, Ireland and Finland!

Because there are loads of countries voting, all the entries and ‘rest of the world’

Yes but instead of giving the individual points awarded by each country's public vote, they added them up and gave it as one total, for speed.

FatAndFiftySomething · 13/05/2024 21:56

The highest public vote was 337 I think.

No wait - that’s televoting.

Here's an example that explains in part why the public vote can diverge from the jury vote

So is it 37 countries plus ‘the rest of the world’? So does that count as 38?

Right I’ve got it now! Grin

I think so yes. The highest score any country could get would be 37x12 (as you can’t vote for your own country) so 444
but also the jury vote.

so the highest total vote for any country would be 888.

Oh sorry not quite as there is no rest of the world jury

25 countries qualify for Eurovision. But all countries participating (37) get a jury vote. After that, the same 37 countries get a public vote. The public vote is read out as a total for each country, rather than individually, hence the larger numbers for popular acts.

EDIT: It was 25 this year due to the Netherlands disqualification. It's usually 26.

Xrayrequest · 13/05/2024 22:02

26 countries who got through to the final plus another 11 who were eliminated at the earlier stages so about 37 countries voting in total

This. Why anyone thought putting forward someone with a shit song, weak vocals and a set featuring men in bondage gear simulating sex in a grubby toilet was a good idea, I have no idea

100%- Couldn’t have put it better myself!

ItIsEverywhere · 13/05/2024 22:22

Well this year we justifiably did badly, but I did also wonder how we managed to get absolutely zero from anywhere else.

The song is mediocre and acceptable as a proper recording, but the live performance was awful and the only one I wasn't so happy about my 8 year old watching.

DramaAlpaca · 13/05/2024 22:26

@Clearinguptheclutter THANK YOU!! My DS has spent most of this evening unsuccessfully trying to get me to understand how the public vote worked, and you managed to get it through to me in a couple of succinct posts.

DS, I might add, is seriously pissed off with you for explaining it better than he did Grin

That is indeed interesting. I wonder what it would look like if they put all the votes in order so we could see both the top ten, but also who was 11th, 12th etc for each country.
