How did Ollie get no points in the public vote for Eurovision?

FatAndFiftySomething · 13/05/2024 21:32

I don’t mean ‘because people didn’t like his song’, I mean, literally how do the voting points work?

I’ve googled and not found an answer. It’s not percentages as some people got a few hundred.

Is it like 1 point per thousand public votes (or whatever the numbers are ) and he didn’t reach 1000 votes from any single country?

That's so weird! I'm sure I remember the French "nil points" mentioned in Eurovision all the time! Maybe that's something which became synonymous with it, but never happened in the program.

The first zero points in Eurovision were scored in 1962, under a new voting system. When a country finishes with a score of zero, it is often referred to in English-language media as nul points /ˌnjuːl ˈpwæ̃/[33] or nil points /ˌnɪl ˈpɔɪnts/, albeit incorrectly.

It was referred to as nul points by the UK presenter.

Nul points is a phenomenon coined by someone who can't speak French. It has never been part of the official Eurovision terminology.

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong

I think it is political, UK did woefully around Brexit. I don't think it would have mattered what song was put forward.

Rubbish! As a pp has said (and so did I,) Europe/Europeans don't hate us. They don't even think about us FFS! And most of them don't give a shit that we left the EU.

But every once in a while a brilliant or catchy song comes along like Spaceman or Love shine a light and that overrides the other issues.

So even though they ALLLLL hate us, they give us a chance if we have a decent song?! Confused

LOL! Do give over! What a ludicrous thing to say! 😆

Absolutely, it's all about the songs - I don't think much about Holland or Macedonia, why would they think about us!!

Sam Ryder did a belting job, had Ukraine not got the (much deserved) sympathy vote, solidarity as it were, he would have won.

Likewise Katrina & The Waves did a great job back in the 90's - if you look at all of our winners, and there have been a few, and near misses, they were all upbeat, fun songs that could fit the euro pop genre and were not carrying a message or making some point.

Simple, cheery, catchy, some may say cheesy, that's what stands a good chance in Eurovision.

Was it not Terry who gave us that?

Maybe. He started commentating before I was born and the phrase has been associated with the contest as long as I can remember, but it's not an official phrase.

Yes - just what I said a few posts before. So it's part of UK Eurovision culture.

AprilDecember · 14/05/2024 23:48

And it was never applied to the UK, as it was only used to refer to countries that scored zero overall. And as established, that never happened to the UK until 2003. I remember Norway being the joke when I was a kid, but then they won in 1995. Those were the days when countries would get relegated and not compete the following year. Savage times!

I think you are being very naive here, hate it a strong word, but I think you'll find it's not the most popular country and a very many people do give a shit about Brexit.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/05/2024 15:39

just heard Dizzy on the radio just now. I honestly quite like it. But Olly didn't sing well on the evening and the dancing and staging was just 'odd'.

You're deluded if you think Europeans hate the Brits. As I (and some others have said,) they don't give us a second thought. It's rather arrogant to assume that people in Europe spend time thinking about us! And no, the vast majority of Europeans don't give a shit that the UK left the EU. The EU do because they lost our £350 million a week! 😆 But the ordinary citizens don't give a shiny shite that we left!

BobnLen · 15/05/2024 19:41

The song wasn't bad, it was just a bit background. Compared to Sam Ryder it was weak and nondescript, too much attention to the bad staging over the singing which was more appropriate to a music video than a live show.

It's a terrible lyric, isn't it? Like it's a watered down version of something else that wasn't deemed appropriate.

Or maybe it's just that bad.

This is the chorus lyric:

Won't you make me dizzy from your kisses?
Will you take my hand and spin me
'Round and 'round until the moment never ends? Mm
Make me dizzy from your kisses
Will you take my hand and spin me?
Take me back to the beginning again (again, again)

The first line, which is repeated a lot, could have been a lot cleverer.

YaMuvva · 16/05/2024 01:02

I don’t think he deserved 0 points but I don’t think he got the performance right at all.

The song isn’t that catchy and the staging and choreography became so central to the act that it actually took away from Olly’s singing (I’ve seen him live he’s an AMAZING singer). If you look at what Sam Ryder did - just a stage, a bit of lighting and an incredible voice and infectious enthusiasm.

I think most people, myself included, prefer the stripped back performances

GameOfJones · 16/05/2024 07:48

If he was voted the 11th best song by every country, the UK scores 0. A song that was voted 25th by all countries except one where it was voted 10th would score higher.

I think it's a reasonably catchy radio song. I've seen Olly live and he is an amazing singer but the staging and dancing meant he couldn't catch his breath so his vocals were weak. Eurovision is very unforgiving of weak vocal performances, most of the other acts sang amazingly well....even if the song wasn't great.

I don't know what they were thinking with the cod pieces and the thrusting. It was unnecessary.

chilli24 · 16/05/2024 11:23

so you all think olly is talentless, youre so wrong, brilliant song writer and actor a real talent, he is being himself and whats wrong with that , i thought the staging was really good and before anyone says anything im not gay or non binary or anything like that, to be honest , there were a lot of rubbish songs, including the winner in my opinion, i dont think we should be in the contest anymore, nobody really likes us, they just like the money we throw at it

Eieiom · 16/05/2024 18:25

I think we all have to remember that the Eurovision is much bigger than it was before with 37 countries participating and 26 in the final.
This means that it's more likely to get no points in each jury/country vote and there's also a lower probability of winning for each country as well. The year Abba won for example, there were 17 countries participating.
I've been watching it for over 30 years and now the finals have 4 or 5 good songs, any of which would be a worthy winner.

SwedishEdith · 16/05/2024 22:02

Just watched this, Spain and Croatia again on the telly because I've got the house to myself and I want to know what Olly's performance looked like to the audience in the arena. And how did they do it - all the upside down stuff?

Croatia is still amazing though - fully taking over the stage and making full use of the audience using the glow stick armbands. Love it.
