How did Ollie get no points in the public vote for Eurovision?

FatAndFiftySomething · 13/05/2024 21:32

I don’t mean ‘because people didn’t like his song’, I mean, literally how do the voting points work?

I’ve googled and not found an answer. It’s not percentages as some people got a few hundred.

Is it like 1 point per thousand public votes (or whatever the numbers are ) and he didn’t reach 1000 votes from any single country?

The jury vote vs public vote is also 40/60 ( or opposite if I got muddled just now). So yes kinda complicated but also not like the result for Ollie should have been any different. His voice was not audible so who knows what his song was like really (it’s performance on the night that counts) and the his show was positively Hugh-Grant-with-the-escort-in-the-park level of sleaze. Only entry worse than Ollie’s was the country with the thong-wearing-fattish-blokes in tights. I was watching with my 10 year old and turned it off after about the 9th entry. Won’t be watching next year!

It was shit and he is talentless

As the UK didn't score in the top ten in any country, we got nothing in the public voting round

Remember, countries can't vote for themselves

He is far from talentless, some of his music and on screen work is absolutely fabulous. His Eurovision song & performance was shockingly bad though!

I remember Bardo’s song but not the choreography! Votes here for Croatia, Ireland and Finland!

They got up off the floor. That is the most memorable moment for me.

No the jury and public vote are not weighted. The jury vote is 58 points from the 37 participating countries so (58 x 37). The audience score is 58 points from the 37 participating countries + the rest of the world (so 58 x 38).

Formatting went strange due to use of asterisks..

I'd like to see more data on the scoring. You could be voted 25th by all countries bar one who place you 10th and you'd do better than all countries putting you in 11th place.

It was rubbish and the performance was almost designed to alienate people (which is really saying something for Eurovision). DS is gay and watched it at a Eurovision drinks party. He said they all thought it was embarrassing. I’m not sure who it was aimed at really

I agree. My kids watched with me and were a bit upset by the choreography. It was far too sexual and inappropriate. I remember texting my pal who was also watching saying I never thought I would see the day where something was too gay for eurovision 😁. Fwiw I like his music and think he is very talented but he missed the mark here.

You can most likely find it by looking up individual countries broadcasters. I found Australia's here - UK was 17th in the public vote

The weak vocals were probably because it was a live performance. And the rules say that all the singers have to appear on stage. So no backing vocals or help from a more talented singer in the background

MumblesParty · 14/05/2024 00:45

It was because everyone hates us, because of Brexit and Rwanda. Plenty of them want to come here though. It’s pathetic really.

This is where we realise nobody likes us 🤣

I agree it was a bit ott for Eurovision which has more of a lighthearted feel but, if you look at the (fairly recent) history of the criminalisation of homosexuality in this country and many others, public toilets/showers were a de facto meeting place for men.

The whole staging was probably a reference to George Michael’s Outside music video (one of the greatest music videos of all time) they just didn’t pull it off very well.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/05/2024 21:43

I really don’t think people in other countries would pick up on this

the song was a bit shit, but it was surprising that it was the only song that got 0 from the public. Some were far worse!

The public vote is very unforgiving of weak vocals. Olly couldn't sing properly with the stupid staging.

Same thing happened last year. Mae or whatever her name was couldn't sing live and did very poorly in the vote.

Eieiom · 14/05/2024 01:09

Agree.. Whoever did the choreo and staging for Olly did him dirty. I thought the routine in the grotty shower criminally underutilized the amazing stage in Malmö. I also thought the dance area was so small and the steps so complicated, I think Olly couldn't catch his breath or relax into performing. At the end when he burst out onto the main stage you could almost feel the relief from him.
The costuming was also woeful. He didn't get a chance to shine.

I really think you are overestimating how much anyone cares about the UK one way or the other. It was a pretty nothing song with bad vocals.

RamblingAroundTheInternet · 14/05/2024 02:04

The faux filthy tiles turned me off. I would have taken to it a bit better if they’d used a sparkling posh loo background! Just made it feel dirty. That and the cod pieces were too try hard. Massively detracted from the song.

Embarrassing as people in other countries probably think that’s how we keep our toilets!

So how do you explain Sam Ryder coming second (if not for the Ukrainian solidarity vote he would have won) then?

A lot of people like to whinge that we do poorly because no one likes us but the truth is we keep sending crap entries. It’s no coincidence that as soon as we had a decent entry, we did well.

InWalksBarberalla · 14/05/2024 02:24

I don't think the staging helped at all. I actually preferred it the second time I saw it because I wasn't so distracted by the dirty bathroom vibes. Given it was supposed to be a boxing gym in a spaceship wouldn't a clean setting have made more sense.
I did like the way they made it look like the box was moving, but it must have been pretty ordinary to watch in person, and it impacted the vocals. It was one of the more catchy songs. Still wouldn't have put it in my top 10 songs though.

It wasn’t a great song.

Can’t disagree with that.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 14/05/2024 06:04

I really hope the message starts to sink in that people generally don't want to see other people writhing around in fetish gear. It's not modern or sexy, it's just seedy.

He sung it badly at the semi finals too. I knew he was in Years and years, so expected him to be a better singer. I don't really know the band, so assumed he gets autotuned but apparently he's a good live singer. Not sure why he was so out of tune and weak in both performances.

MariaVT65 · 14/05/2024 06:21

For me it was the staging. It didn’t go with the song. And who wants to watch a bunch of men together in a dirty bathroom? Seriously who? Unless you watch gay porn.

Yes but most people know that from the George Michael video which is what, 20 years old now? I'd hope we'd have moved on from that now, not reinforced a stereotype about gay men shagging in public places on Eurovision! It was just grubby. The thing was so much better when the walls got taken away but it was only for a few seconds.

Fulshaw · 14/05/2024 06:30

I don’t think overtly sexual performances, whether gay or straight, ever go down very well at Eurovision. People want something more light-hearted.
