Not impressed with the NE decision. She has no place in the party. Yes there are constants with dodgy views who vote Labour, but they are not public figures.

Zahawi's letter is just 🤢

Zonder · 09/05/2024 10:06

Diane Abbott apologised. NE hasn't.

I appreciate your explanations @DuncinToffee - still a bit uncomfortable with it all.

Oh me too

And I will be happy to never hear from her again after the GE

This photo is just awful. WTF is Starmer playing at?

Sorry if grumpy sounding, but cat related emergency had me wide awake at 6 am!

fabio12 · 09/05/2024 10:14

I'm sure some other news will overshadow it soon enough!
SO many defections coming, let's just hope Starmer doesn't do the same again with each of them and reinstates Dianne.

I don't like it either and there is an even worse one where he has his hand on her shoulder - vomit emoji

Tho' Starmers defensive body language is a bit at odds with all the grinning and smiling

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/05/2024 10:29

She does seem to have turned up dressed as an air stewardess.

In other news Defra have released plans for streamlining recycling across the country so that everything is the same everywhere. Along with minimum standards for how often bins should be collected.
I assume this means I’m going to be able to recycle less stuff at the kerbside which will be annoying.

Funny that it hasn't hit BBC or other main news outlets. I had to google to find this https://www.letsrecycle.com/news/defra-says-simpler-bin-collections-will-reduce-confusion/
Which includes a paragraph I can't seem to understand:

“Those paying the very substantial costs for councils’ local packaging recycling services – especially citizens, brands and retailers – can rightly set high benchmarks of great customer service, superb packaging recycling performance and demonstrable value-for-money being achieved everywhere.”

Does he mean we can now chuck every packaging that says it is recylcable into our bins and all councils now magically now have machinery that can recycle it, or is he saying we will be shipping it to another country rather than recycling it because companies are paying to label it as recycling so this is better value for money?

Defra says simpler bin collections will “reduce confusion” - letsrecycle.com

Recycling minister Robbie Moore has announced today (9 May) what he says is a ‘common-sense approach” to recycling, which will make bin day “simpler”, in a bid to boost recycling rates nationwide. New simpler recycling collections will see the same mat...

@RafaistheKingofClay

'She does seem to have turned up dressed as an air stewardess.'

That's probably because she's getting ready for her next job working on the flights going out to Rwanda 😉

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2024 11:59

Funny that it hasn't hit BBC

The same BBC that managed to "miss" a 100,000+ strong march in London last year to rejoin the EU ? Completely unreported, not just kept off the homepage.

The fact Laura K still has a job there speaks volumes.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/05/2024 12:00

I didn’t understand that either.

We can put loads of stuff in recycling here. Way more than just glass, plastic, paper and tins. I’m not sure recycling less stuff and increasing black bin collections to fortnightly from 3 weekly is where I want my council tax money spent.

Resurfacing this road on the other hand…

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/05/2024 12:07

Lol just as I posted that the bus passed a pot hole so deep highway maintenance have put one of these over it.

I have mixed thoughts on NE's defection to Labour.

I think the fact that she has left the Tories should be exploited more, kind of 'that's how bad they are, that even she has left them'. I think the acceptance should be done at arms length so to speak. If she wasn't standing down at the next GE then I don't think I could accept it at all.

But it should also be made perfectly clear that her previous opinions and actions are not approved of by Labour and that won't be tolerated. An apology from her would be nice but I can't see that happening.

That photo of her with Starmer is pushing it way too far for my liking. Really not quite sure what he's thinking by doing that.

And even more worrying is Dodd's saying that NE is a 'good, natural fit' for the Labour party. WTF???

Natalie Elphicke: Labour insists ex-Tory MP is 'good fit' for party

Some Labour MPs are unhappy about Tory defector Natalie Elphicke's past comments.

fabio12 · 09/05/2024 12:19

@RafaistheKingofClay our council has been at great pains to release viral videos showing what can and can't be put in the black, blue, green, red and food bins. They've been at it for about 8 months, so I am guessing this was news to them too!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 09/05/2024 12:33

Still my favourite Natalie Elphicke moment.

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2024 12:41

I thinks some shitting needs to happen here. Either that or get off the pot and leave it to the Tories.

Being fussy about where your members come from isn't a great advert for an "inclusive" party. But it is a great stick for and even less inclusive party to beat you with.

mibbelucieachwell · 09/05/2024 13:12

Thank you for the new thread, especially for the discussion about NE. I was completely confused at the news. My first reaction was that it makes the Cons, NE and the Labour Party look bad. But hopefully the posters who think it's a political astute point to accept her are right.

As for NZ's resignation letter. I have no words. To summarise it,

Dear Rishi,

I'm too amazing to be arsed with any more of this now that there's a good chance I'll lose my seat at the election

Cheers,

NZ

tobee · 09/05/2024 13:19

I had debate with my pragmatic, non politically affiliated dh about Elphicke yesterday. I'm not sure he remembers the ins and outs of her but his position that Starmer would have looked incredibly arrogant to turn down NE. And that Labour have a perceived problem with being Highfalutin with their principles to the detriment of getting elected.

For me, the stereotype is the Tories do anything to get elected and then decide policy and Labour spend days in "smoke filled rooms" to decide the minutiae of their policies, which, historically, often don't widely appeal at election time. Hence mostly in opposition. So you need a happy medium. But where do you draw the line? And who's to say that the line is in the same place for everyone?

pointythings · 09/05/2024 13:24

@tobee I think it's sensible to work on the assumption that none of this is uncomplicated, and I think your DH makes a good point.

I don't think its "fussy" to expect a party and leader to at least try to operate by the values they espouse, especially when those values have been the rationale for keeping their own MPs away from the whip.

Throwing down the welcome mat and doing the grinning idiot pose with someone like NE with her record on misogyny and race is wholly contrary to those values. She has not withdrawn a single one of her previous comments, or been asked to, or shown the slightest hint of any real interest in Labour beyond a publicity stunt for her post Westminster career plus poking Sunak in the eye.

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2024 13:45

For me , the frothing in the media, trying to drum up a "frenzy" over NE (does it not remind some of the Angela Rayner witch hunt ????) suggests whatever Labour and/or NE have done, it's a bad thing for Team Tory. And believe me, that's good enough.

I am more firmly convinced that deep, deep, deep under the covers of this, there are a small collective of Tory MPs (possibly not all ideologically aligned, but certainly personally aligned) who really are not content to play the Rish! waiting game.

The current "thinking" such as is from the pundits is that Rish! is safe, and therefore can do whatever he likes. It would indeed be madness to replace leaders at this stage.

However there's more than one way to skin a cat. Such as a "bunch" of Tory MPs letting it be known that they would suddenly have urgent dental appointments when the next VoNC rolls around.

I'm old enough to remember Callaghan losing the VoNC.

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2024 13:58

This isn't cricket, and any "rules" you try to play by will be weaponised against you.

Just how angry are you with the current state of affairs that you need Sunaks replacement to be purer than the driven snow ?

If you want to have another 5 years of Tory rule and give the fates another chance to serve up perfection, then fair enough. But that's not me.

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/05/2024 14:03

Starmer is being pragmatic, if she was staying on then it would be different.

She has to keep her more odious views to herself, I'm sure Starmer would have no problem with withdrawing the whip if she puts a foot out of place. She will also be kept well away from anything important I would imagine.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

BIossomtoes · 09/05/2024 14:10

I’m with you @SerendipityJane and @L1ttledrummergirl. This is just distraction. Anything that embarrasses Sunak and pushes him an inch closer to losing a vote of no confidence or calling an election is positive in my book.
