Go to work.

Miss this stuff.

Come home to news that makes me go Shock

I'm not sure what to make of the defection. Other than the fact it's clear they don't see the Tory's winning.

But both defectors are standing down. Perhaps it paves the way for them to return at some point - and return not associated with the current RW faction of the party?

Panesar's statement

So today I am withdrawing as a General Election candidate for The Workers Party. I realise I need more time to listen, learn and find my political home, one that aligns with my personal and political values.

Edited

Well that's an admission. He's basically saying I've just worked out what I've signed up to and I've changed my mind!

Lots of quotes here:

"Never interfere with an enemy while he’s in the process of destroying himself"

In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity. The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting

Apparently, NE's defection was not expected

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/05/2024 18:38

I'm just watching PMQs. Fucking hell, how much lying was Sunak doing. Surely someone that far in denial needs menal health input?

I travelled back from Spain last night and whilst standing in the queue for border control was able to mull over my surroundings. The airport in Spain had pictures of the surrounding areas, helpful staff and was generally friendly, welcoming and calm. The signs said things like " please have your passport ready".

Arriving in the UK, the walls were stark, the few staff looked shattered, the messaging more bullish "you MUST have your passport ready". The screens were informing us that we were being treated as undesirable migrants until we could prove otherwise, and the whole place matched my thoughts on what a prison or remand centre reception would look like.

The messages were in English only, so who were these aimed at? This was not a friendly, or welcoming first impression of our country and, as someone who doesn't travel often, I was shocked and disappointed by how bad we must appear to visitors.

dontcallmelen · 08/05/2024 18:49

Well strange shenanigans going on this afternoon, wasn’t Elphicke the one who told Marcus Rashford to stick playing football & not worry about feeding children?
agree L1ttledrummer the differences are very stark & extremely unwelcoming.
Also do hope Adam Ryan & Rousette are ok 💐

Serious anger in CCHQ at Elphicke's defection given she was an 80:20 MP granted extra campaign funding/ support to help retain a key Tory-held seat.

A Tory source says it's disappointing that "generous donations of party member's and supporters have been used for someone that's turned her back" on the party.

Given who they take donations from, there's a delicious irony in this.

Perdy has been thrown into complete discombobulation by the NE news.

VimtoVimto · 08/05/2024 21:55

@L1ttledrummergirl I thought similar when we flew back from Italy last summer. The arrivals in the UK airport was less than welcoming, there were posters about modern slavery and illegal immigration.

Cheguevarahamster · 08/05/2024 21:57

I think this is very canny from Labour. They seem to have strategy of undermining Sunak on a rolling basis. Poulter, Local elections, Elphicke. I have no love for NE but this is pretty ruthless political publicity from Starmer and I'm here for it. I wonder what's next?

user8800 · 08/05/2024 22:27

....more defections to come if the press are to be believed...

I'm with Jess on this. I might be a bit thick but I still can't really see how NE joining labour makes labour look good. Lots of comments on twitter about how she's now a labour MP and Diane Abbott still isn't.

Alexandra2001 · 09/05/2024 06:34

What i don't get is if, according to the Tory press and MPs, NE is soooo toxic and rightwing, why was she in the Tory party?

However, it does look like Starmer has scored a bit of an own goal here.

user8800 · 09/05/2024 06:59

I think accepting NE into the party is shocking, but I know why Starner has done it.
Further proof he will do and say anything to gain power.
Hugely disappointing.

Thanks for the new thread!

That looks a very concerned cat!

Loved the dog in a basket photo too.

Wow! Must watch car crash interview where Sophy Ridge shreds Michelle Donelan over Natalie Elphicke and immigration

SR, "Are you sorry to see her go?"

MD, "I'm confused.. She said Labour didn't have an asylum seeker plan and she's defected to Labour.. It's nonsensical"

SR, "So she thinks Labour doesn't have a plan but she defected to Labour. How bad does she think the Conservative plan actually is? She must think it's really bad"

MD, "I don't think that's about our plan"

SR, "She said she doesn't trust the Conservative party to deliver. She doesn't think Labour's plan is great but she must think yours is even worse"

MD, "I think there are questions about her judgment here.. This speaks more about her decision making than the government's plan.. Our plan is working.. Illegal immigration is down by a third"

SR, "Sorry, illegal immigration is down by a third?"

MD, "We got the boats down by a third last year:

SR, "No, it's at record levels"

MD, "Yes, but I meant annually"

SR, "At this point of the year, it's a record levels"

MD, "That's because we've been stalled trying to pass the Rwanda bill"

SR, "How many people have been sent to Rwanda?"

MD, "It's only just passed"

SR, "Well that's why you can't say it's a triumph yet"

MD, "We can say it's an active deterrent.. Ireland said last week"

SR, "Right now it's a deterrent for people who are already here, which is not people coming to the UK. When you have evidence to say Rwanda is working I will accept that, until then, I'll look at the actual stats that we have.. Record number of boat crossings"

That's what it looks like to me. I'd have more respect for him if he had said "Of course we will welcome you if you apologise for the most right wing stuff for a start".

And then I'd have even more respect if he accepted Diane Abbots apologies and welcomed her back in.

Cheguevarahamster · 09/05/2024 07:33

Nadhim Zahawi is stepping down at next GE

pointythings · 09/05/2024 07:35

I think accepting NE as a defector is a Machiavellian move, but politics is a dirty game. Playing nice won't win it, and I'm glad KS seems to know it. I'd feel differently if she had been offered a safeLabour seat, but she hasn't.

itsgettingweird · 09/05/2024 07:47

I'm wondering if this defection is a Tory party ploy. She's standing down so there's no LT gain here.

But they are weakening Labours position and making them look weak. Car crash interview with Dodds this morning where they couldn't explain why Abbott was still made to stand down and yet NE was accepted
