Trying to make cake toppers for my dd Snow White birthday cake. If it was just at my home I wouldn’t care how bad they are but we’re going to a restaurant with a load of friends and I am a bit self conscious about this cake and everyone else seeing it and secretly laughing at it.

i feel like these are horrendous and thinking of just giving up and going Tesco ha! Pls tell me the truth should I give up while I’m ahead?!

The dwarf is pretty good. Fondant modelling is a LOT harder than you think it’s going to be.
Trouble is you’ll struggle to find anything Snow White themed in any supermarket. Have you got time to order a cake topper? The card, banner type ones are really easy to use.
Have you googled around for a simpler idea on the right theme.

PickAChew · 30/04/2024 12:03

I've seen much, much worse.

Kitsmummy · 30/04/2024 12:05

I think you need to own it and laugh along with them! They're not too bad but yes Dopey is quite scary 😂.

My first ever cake I made for my son was a Dalek...it was absolutely terrible and to this day remains his favourite cake ever!

They are great. Well done

Freeasabird76 · 30/04/2024 12:07

I think they are great and there's absolutely no way I could make them that good
I would show them off with pride.

ChangeEmailAddress · 30/04/2024 12:08

Just make a nice fresh basic sponge on the day and stick some printed paper photos on. Cake will look great and taste fantastic - often the cake under the elaborate decorations is poor (unless it's a rich fruit cake).

EleanorYoung · 30/04/2024 12:09

I love them! Years ago my friend made an enchanted pink princess tower cake for her daughter. She loved it so much and thought her mum was a cake wizard. We all still laugh because it looked like an enormous penis. Honestly best cake ever 😂

OpusGiemuJavlo · 30/04/2024 12:09

It's perfectly decent. Not professional-level, you couldn't sell at that skill level but it's absolutely fine for a kid's birthday. They won't care. Accuracy isn't important, they just want the sugar.

Fruit cake...I assume this is a cake for a child and not an 80 year old! Grin

Jegersur · 30/04/2024 12:11

I always decorated my DC’s cakes and I’m no cake decorator. It was part of birthday tradition for us. The DC always loved them and remember them even now. I’d be pleased with myself if I came up with something as good as those figures. I never even attempted figures!

Paper photos?! You are joking, surely.

Oblomov24 · 30/04/2024 12:16

Eh?
Why on earth give up. I think they look great.

Fluffywigg · 30/04/2024 12:16

They look fab! Far better than what I could do!

Chaotica · 30/04/2024 12:20

They're great. I make my DC's cakes and I can assure you they do not care if they aren't professional level. Anyone else can shut right up (but TBH people are usually impressed anyway).

But 7 Dwarves? - that will take you ages... I'd give up on about 3 and tell my DC that there's another story where most of the Dwarves are on holiday.

AlltheFs · 30/04/2024 12:22

I think they are great as a homemade cake, I couldn’t do anything like that.
It sounds like you know vile people though if laughing at that is something they’d do. I wouldn’t invite any of them. Get new friends.

Cherrymuffiny · 30/04/2024 12:22

@Chaotica im thinking I may need all 7 to hide my potentially even more dodgy Snow White behind once I’ve made her 😂

Oh no don’t not use them! They’re brilliant, I love them! I’m genuinely being honest! So cute! I made a pile of cake toppers for a star wars birthday party years ago and a Star Wars birthday cake topper. No mattter what I done, Han Solo looked like Neil Diamond! I loved it! Honestly, so cute, really good, I’m impressed and the kids will love them! 😍

Sparklfairy · 30/04/2024 12:25

I think they're charming!

I admit, my first thought was, 'Ah, so Dopey's a crackhead and Grumpy's his dealer' but I'm impressed by your dedication and wouldn't be 'secretly laughing' at all.

mitogoshi · 30/04/2024 12:26

I think they are great! I wish I could do that ! I've been quoted £182 for one topper for my wedding cake, I'm going to try myself

locketrocket · 30/04/2024 12:26

They look great!

My DC (19 & 17) still talk about their homemade childhood birthday cakes. And they still insist on a homemade cake now.

Honestly, your dc will love and remember this 😍

Iloveyoubut · 30/04/2024 12:27

marzipanlover81 · 30/04/2024 10:34

yes im afraid

decent attempt though

honestly… do the posters like you sit there trawling through the unanswered posts salivating about how much of an arse you can be if you just get in there with your shitty comment first? Don’t even answer that because I already know you do.

😂

I usually get half way through decorating a cake and think 'Why did I start this??' I'm usually pleased I did several hours later.

Cherrymuffiny · 30/04/2024 12:29

@Sparklfairy haha i will never be able to get this image out my head now looking at them. Poor crackhead dopey.

I think they're absolutely lovely, so characterful! I think your style of modelling really suits the dwarves, I honestly think they look better and more cartoon-like than if you had bought them! I probably wouldn't make a Snow White though, I'd go with bought doll. As she's supposed to look all picture-perfect. (However: if you do make Snow White please post her here 😁)

Growlybear83 · 30/04/2024 12:33

I think they look really good. My daughter would always have much preferred a home made cake / decorations than shop bought. I always made my daughter's cakes when she was younger and have to admit that I produced some real monstrosities, but she loved them because of the effort I had put in. I think my most memorable effort was when she was desperately in love with Matthew Corbett (of sooty and sweep fame) and I made a life sized Matthew Corbett head. It was really quite scary but she knew how much love had gone into it 😆😆

If anyone laughs about it, then suggest that they might like to do better themselves, and point out that anyone can buy something from the supermarket but you care enough about your daughters birthday to go to the trouble of making something yourself. The effort you have put into these is obvious (and they are WAY better than most of my cake decorations).
