Trying to make cake toppers for my dd Snow White birthday cake. If it was just at my home I wouldn’t care how bad they are but we’re going to a restaurant with a load of friends and I am a bit self conscious about this cake and everyone else seeing it and secretly laughing at it.

i feel like these are horrendous and thinking of just giving up and going Tesco ha! Pls tell me the truth should I give up while I’m ahead?!

They’re good but terrifying

Princesspollyyy · 30/04/2024 11:24

Sorry I don't think they look good.

crumblingschools · 30/04/2024 11:25

@Cherrymuffiny I’m not sure what you are reading when saying responses are between 1/10 - 5/10. Apart from one grumpy poster (see what I did there!), pretty much everyone else has said they are well over 5/10.

They do not need to be perfect, everyone can see who they are. They are made with love (and probably some swearing and some ‘why the hell did I agree to this’ if you are anything like me!). But your DD will love them and they will be remembered (for the right reason) for a long time after the cake has been eaten.

I think these are brilliant! I’m sure your DD will love them and anyone who laughs behind your back needs to find some joy in theirs lives!

Hopingtobe4 · 30/04/2024 11:26

They looked good,I have seen professional cakes where they have characters along the cake stand that are actually plastic figures if you are very self conscious could order off amazon and do thst and focus on decorating the cake ? Bonus being your DD Will have the figures?

ZippyZappyZoo · 30/04/2024 11:27

As someone who never makes stuff like that because I suck at it (but still makes beautiful cakes) I actually love them

Jegersur · 30/04/2024 11:27

I think they are really good. Don’t replace them with something shop bought.

Hoppinggreen · 30/04/2024 11:28

Far better than anything I could do and anyone who laughs at them is a Dick

SalviaDivinorum · 30/04/2024 11:28

I think they are great.

We are our own worst critics. Your DC will love them.

Make sure you take plenty of pictures to look back on.

LakeTiticaca · 30/04/2024 11:28

They look great 👍 it's a kids party not an exhibition of Michelangelo's work!!

SiobhanSharpe · 30/04/2024 11:30

And they are much better than 5/10 -- honestly. They have real charm and character , please do use them.
if people are graceless enough to laugh, that's on them.

JimPanzee · 30/04/2024 11:31
yummy great british baking show GIF by PBS

I think they're fab! And a million times better than what I could ever hope to achieve ✨️ 👏
Haven't you seen GBBO? It's better than a lot of what those guys produce too!!

FunLurker · 30/04/2024 11:32

Think main problem is the eyes, just have another go at the eyes and it might not be so bad. Try not to do too much detail to hands, if needs must put a little ladybug or a flower on hands.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 30/04/2024 11:32

@Cherrymuffiny

Keep going! I am 43 and still remember all the cakes my mum made me. Were they perfect? Probably not. But my mum made them for me. That is what i remember.

I bet the people who might laugh at you couldn’t make these figures either. So ✌️.

ArcaneWireless · 30/04/2024 11:33

Moreover, if my mum had made cake toppers for me, my adult heart now would be bursting. Please keep them.

Exactly what @FakeMiddleton said ⬆️

These are the things we carry through life with us @Cherrymuffiny

Haud gaun.

Ye are doing grand.

GigiAnnna · 30/04/2024 11:34

No they're good. They're not professional level but I couldn't make those as well as that and a lot of people probably couldn't either.

wpalfhal · 30/04/2024 11:35

I think they look lovely, no one is going to be expecting Michelin star chef standard, you're a mum making a cake for your DD and I think they look great. Your daughter will love that you went to that effort and it'll mean more to her than shop bought.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/04/2024 11:35

I make all my kids birthday cakes and some have been great and some not so. Your toppers look fine and will mean much more than a bland cake from Tesco!

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 30/04/2024 11:35

They're lovely- very skilled for a homemade attempt and who gives a toss if anyone is secretly laughing. You made a big effort and that means a lot. (I must admit their shoes remind me of tiny little poos though) GrinGrin

Rhythmisadancer · 30/04/2024 11:41

There was a programme on radio 4 the other day (might have been a segment on the Food Programme) about home made birthday cakes, and the amount of love that goes into them. I made some dreadful monstrosities when my DC were little, and we laugh at the pictures of them now. The kids can't believe how delighted they were with them at the time - but they were.
Be proud of your dwarves - they're not perfect but they are adorable

Wallabyone · 30/04/2024 11:53

They are so sweet and I think homemade cakes are the best. My daughter said the other day, that our cakes are so much nicer than ones made in a factory (she's 9).
My mum is a brilliant baker and decorator, but she wasn't always! However we always had a delicious, iced cake and we loved it every time. Who would laugh? They're idiots if they do!

blackoverbillsmothers · 30/04/2024 11:53

I can’t believe how critical people are. I think they’re great. Nothing there for anyone to laugh at. I’d be proud if I could produce those. Use them!

DrJoanAllenby · 30/04/2024 11:57

A homemade cake isn't supposed to look perfect and your creations are lovely.

If anyone is snotty about it give them the challenge of making one.

Badburyrings · 30/04/2024 11:59

When do you need them for? You can buy these on etsy and ebay etc. I just did a google. I recently bought a train set cake topper made from fondant from Etsy and it saved me a whole load of hassle and heartache than trying to make my own. No one needs to know you bought them!

But yours look great anyhow and personally I would be quite impressed you even tried (I wouldn't because i know I wouldn't be able to do it)

WhatsUnderneathTheClothesBrookeDavis · 30/04/2024 12:02

I love them and the fact that you spent time making them makes them even more special. Be proud of yourself, I bet your DD will love it
