Trying to make cake toppers for my dd Snow White birthday cake. If it was just at my home I wouldn’t care how bad they are but we’re going to a restaurant with a load of friends and I am a bit self conscious about this cake and everyone else seeing it and secretly laughing at it.

i feel like these are horrendous and thinking of just giving up and going Tesco ha! Pls tell me the truth should I give up while I’m ahead?!

Please don't buy a cake topper! Homemade cakes are so much better, the effort that goes into them shows your love. And if they're wonky you will have a family legend for years. We actually have a print out of our Yule Log photo and it gets pinned on the mantelpiece every Christmas Grin

Please keep going, MNers are cheering for you.

Lurkingandlearning · 30/04/2024 14:35

Please use them. I imagine you’ve put a lot of work into then. Your children’s party isn’t Bake Off, who’s going to criticise. They do look a bit sinister to me but that’s funny which, to me, is a good thing.

I hope you all have a lovely party 🎉🎈

taylorswift1989 · 30/04/2024 14:37

I think they're fantastic, OP! I wish I could make something that brilliant! Your DD will love it and if family and friends laugh, I would think they are just jealous and insecure that they have no creative talent.

I will definitely be posting the Grand finale if I get there! I won’t be buying toppers, will be straightforward purchased cake or homemade. It’s all or nothing now 😂 currently day dreaming about how Snow White is going to turn out. /having nightmares.

Need work to hurry up so I can get on with my new hobby of creating sinister/scary/crackhead dwarves.

@Cherrymuffiny I think they are brilliant!!!

Zebedee999 · 30/04/2024 15:03

They look amazing - well done.

MrBouc · 30/04/2024 15:07

I think they are great!
Obviously not amazing had you been a professional cake decorator and charged a lot of money, but great as a parent who has gone out her way to try and do something lovely for her child.
Some people don't value these things, I value them highly so it's a 10/10 from me.

These are amazing. Noone will laugh secretly. Don't discard them.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 30/04/2024 15:11

Please don’t give up and buy a cake. They’re fantastic! Literally no one is going to be laughing behind your back.

@ZipZapZoom dopeys traumatic shit, so funny. I honestly am unhappy with them. Looks like a mixed bag on who thinks they’re 1/10 vs 5/10 :-) appreciate all the responses though

Clearly making cakes is not my calling 😂 my family & friends will first laugh behind my back and then probably about 3 years later the stories of how they laughed at my shit cake will all spill out. Reasonable if the cake is that bad …

First of all, they are not bad. They are quite nice in a quirky way.
Secondly, cake making can be your calling considering this is your bad work. I have a friend, she used to make such sloppy looking cakes using simple designs for her daughter, a few years later her cakes look like serious professional levels.
I really want to see the final cake.

CharlotteBog · 30/04/2024 15:19

"Watching" so I get to see the final result. I think they're lovely OP, certainly better than any cake you'd get from Tesco.

Your DD will love it and in years to come you'll talk about the time, effort and love you put into making it.

I've got fond memories of the cakes (both good and terrible) I've made for my boys over the years.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 30/04/2024 15:25

I once served up a Pokeball that looked like a bloody tampon, to a room full of 8 year old boys and all of their mothers. I didn't give a shit and neither should you. These figures are miles better than any attempt I have ever made. Use them and be proud.

bookandabrew · 30/04/2024 15:26

I'll add my voice to those who think they're great!

PoppyCherryDog · 30/04/2024 15:47

As non-professional ones I think they’re fine

FamBae · 30/04/2024 15:48

I Think they're lovely, made with love not on a production line.

JimPansy · 30/04/2024 15:52

They're great @Cherrymuffiny

Xsnsnshsjs · 30/04/2024 15:52

I massively admire your chutzpah and am cheering you on from the sidelines!!!

Weirdly I'm a pretty advanced baker but never make my kids' own cakes as it's too much pressure and I get stressed they'll be disappointed so it's lovely to live vicariously through you.

They are also, I'd say, more 'great effort' than 'totally terrible'. I'm totally mean about other people in my head and if I were one of your friends or family my response would definitely be one of respect for the effort made.

AhBiscuits · 30/04/2024 16:08

My son with the not really recognisable as a ship, pirate ship cake 😂He made the flag.
It tasted good and he loved it. I always think homemade cakes are extra special when I see one at a party, and they are rarely perfect.

@NailedTheCake I’m desperate to see your Yule log. Sadly, I can’t post anything in return - even a Yule log would be far beyond my capabilities.

Bippityboppityboo67 · 30/04/2024 16:43

I think they look fine for homemade
I once tried to make a light saber for Ds2 cake and he said it looked rude 🤣 but I did manage a fairly decent one eventually after some practice

Anonymous2025 · 30/04/2024 16:53

They look absolutely fine ! Your daughter will love it

Divebar2021 · 30/04/2024 16:58

I think they’re great - I would be smiling from ear to ear if I was your buddy. ( with you not at you)

Dollmeup · 30/04/2024 17:08

I think you should use them!

They obviously don't look like they were made by a professional but who cares? You can definitely tell what they are (way better than anything I can manage, mine would be unidentifiable blobs!) and I bet your daughter will be delighted.

GanninHyem · 30/04/2024 17:10

Used to love my mam's attempts at birthday cakes. Look back at photos of wonky postman pat or Rosie and Jim looking like they'd fallen off the boat fondly. You can tell the love that went into them rather than slinging money at a professional attempt. You can tell who there supposed to be, I think your kid will love it!!

LunaNorth · 30/04/2024 17:14

I think they’re lovely.
