Urgent help needed. Worried I won’t fit in a plane seat.

I’m due to fly in 2 days and I suddenly have an urgent panic that I’m not going to fit in the plane seat and will be humiliated in to getting off.

I don’t weigh myself so I don’t know how heavy I am but I wear a size 14/16 in stretchy jeans. I have a mothers apron and endo so I’m often bloated and wear a size 16/18 on top (although some 18s are quite big on me, depending on retailer). I often buy clothes in a size 20 to hide myself.

Our flight is with KLM. Are they on the smaller side? I feel sick with worry that I’m not going to fit.

Size 14 to 18? You will be FINE, I promise. You’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about, try not to fret and enjoy your trip. You won’t have any trouble getting in or out of your seat.

Avatartar · 28/04/2024 21:36

phone the airline for advice OP. They will know seat size any of any contingency plans if you don’t fit in. The worst case is you can’t fly. Hope you get sorted

You’re not even close to not fitting!

If it helps, the last time I was on a plane was with an ex partner who weighed 24st and was 6ft3. He had no problems fitting in his seat although he needed a seat belt extender thing.

MudandParsnips · 28/04/2024 21:38

You'll be absolutely fine. I flew KLM recently and I'm about the same size as you and had no problem; you don't sound very big from your description. You can get seatbelt extenders if needed but you need to be very large not to fit in the seat itself. It's easy to worry about these things, but try not to panic. Have a great trip!

EweCee · 28/04/2024 21:39

You definitely don’t need to worry. Normal seatbelt will be fine too. Have a great trip!

Candleabra · 28/04/2024 21:40

You’ll be absolutely fine. Try not to worry and spoil your holiday.

SidekickSylvia · 28/04/2024 21:40

I have a friend who is 6 foot tall and a size 28/30, and she flies regularly on Ryanair to Ireland. It's only an hour's flight, but she books the extra leg room seats. She's never mentioned her weight being an issue, just leg length. At size 14/16 you've no reason to worry, seriously. Enjoy your holiday.

BarryKentPoet · 28/04/2024 21:40

I've flown as a size 26 and was able to fit. Im a 14/16 now and have plenty of space either side of me!

MintyCedric · 28/04/2024 21:42

Last time I flew was with EasyJet and I was a size 22 - I fitted fine and didn’t need a seatbelt extender

ts8789 · 28/04/2024 21:42

14-18?! You'll be fine. I was size 30-32 so much much bigger than you and I fit in the seat. I did have to ask for a seatbelt extender though but tbh the embarrassment was a big motivator to finally start losing weight. You are nowhere near big enough to worry about seat sizes.

Give over 🙄

Of course you’ll fit in the seat OP.

lordloveadog · 28/04/2024 21:43

This is anxiety talking. Size 14/16 is average or less for adult women. Obviously women that size and much larger fly all the time.

WorriedWife3 · 28/04/2024 21:43

Isn't size 14 the average size in the UK?

pointythings · 28/04/2024 21:44

You'll fit. I'm a 20/22 and I fit in the cheapest of el cheapo tiny airline seats with no seatbelt extender needed.

Comedycook · 28/04/2024 21:45

I'm about your size ....never even occurred to me that I wouldn't fit in a plane seat. I feel a bit offended 😂

FlightPanic · 28/04/2024 21:45

TYSM everyone for the prompt replies. I’m feeling slightly better about it. I worked myself up all day measuring seat sizes and not wanting to go. I’ve never flown before so I panicked.

Overthebow · 28/04/2024 21:46

I’m a similar size and fit with room to spare, it’s never even been a consideration that I won’t fit. You’ll be absolutely fine!

BrainNotAvailableTryAnotherOne · 28/04/2024 21:46

Size 18 here, regular ryanair flyer. No problems.

Topseyt123 · 28/04/2024 21:46

This is a frequent worry of mine and I am bigger than you. The only airline I have ever had any problems with is Ryanair because they are quite mean with seatbelt length and I occasionally need a seatbelt extension.

Other airlines I have been fine with. I think you will be OK and I wish you a good trip.

pelotonaddiction · 28/04/2024 21:47

I've worried about this before and fitting in MRI machines/chairs etc but it's always been ok
I'm a similar size, 16 bottom and endo belly

Comedycook · 28/04/2024 21:47

I often buy clothes in a size 20 to hide myself

Why? Unless you're buying a cloak of invisibility, all you're doing is wearing ill fitting clothes.

OutOfTheHouse · 28/04/2024 21:51

I’m a 16/18 and it’s all in my arse.
The only time I’ve ever struggled was on Virgin when we had the bulkhead seats so there were fixed arms and the entertainment and trays were in the arms so they were solid.

Chypre · 28/04/2024 21:51

You certainly will be fine, but if you won’t be comfortable don’t even dare to think it’s because of your size or build…. I am “petite” size and wearing kids section shoes and still can’t settle in those seats, ergonomics are just OFF. Especially new BA economy cabins, those are more like bar stools somehow, despite the full back and arm rests.

FlightPanic · 28/04/2024 21:56

These are very reassuring. I’ve stopped feeling sick with panic now.
