Urgent help needed. Worried I won’t fit in a plane seat.

I’m due to fly in 2 days and I suddenly have an urgent panic that I’m not going to fit in the plane seat and will be humiliated in to getting off.

I don’t weigh myself so I don’t know how heavy I am but I wear a size 14/16 in stretchy jeans. I have a mothers apron and endo so I’m often bloated and wear a size 16/18 on top (although some 18s are quite big on me, depending on retailer). I often buy clothes in a size 20 to hide myself.

Our flight is with KLM. Are they on the smaller side? I feel sick with worry that I’m not going to fit.

Yes you’ll fit.

for those of us who are larger and might need a seatbelt extender I just discovered you can buy them on a well know online retailer and so take your own for discretion

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/04/2024 22:28

Mate, you will be more than fine, you aren't big at all. I am a size 14/16 for trousers and some skirts and just did an economy flight to the USA and back.

I was seated in the middle seat between 2 strangers and there was plenty of room and the normal seat belt was plenty long enough (the bigger issue was trying not to elbow either of them as I ate my inflight meal 😬)

FlightPanic · 19/05/2024 08:31

I’ve come back to the thread to update for anyone else who might find this. I fit in the seat with no issues at all, room to spare. I didn’t need a seatbelt extender either.

Thanks to all the reassuring replies.

You’ll be fine. Are you just flying to Amsterdam? Short flight nothing to worry about

MaryFuckingFerguson · 19/05/2024 08:33

You’ll be fine. I’ve seen people much, much fatter than you on planes. It might best, but you’ll definitely fit in the seat.

You’ll be fine OP I’m a 16-18 with an apron too and I fit fine don’t even come close to touching other people.

Ooops missed that!

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/05/2024 08:35

Wonderful. Glad you had a good trip.

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 08:36

@FlightPanic we did try and tell you Grin

My dp is a lot larger than you and fits without issue, well Ryan Air is tight but they are mean! I would think you would need to be well into the 20's before seatbelt extensions are needed.

Isn't size 14 the average size in the UK?

It's been size 16 for decades.
OP you are the size of most UK women, you'll be fine!

Why? Unless you're buying a cloak of invisibility, all you're doing is wearing ill fitting clothes.

This is so true. It just makes people look much bigger

I have a friend who is 6 foot tall and a size 28/30, and she flies regularly on Ryanair to Ireland. It's only an hour's flight, but she books the extra leg room seats. She's never mentioned her weight being an issue, just leg length. At size 14/16 you've no reason to worry, seriously. Enjoy your holiday.

I was on a plane once where somebody very large was asked to move from an extra legroom seat because it was next to an emergency exit.

FlightPanic · 19/05/2024 08:57

@Clearinguptheclutter No not to Amsterdam, it was a connecting flight but I’d been told that KLM seats are very very small
so I had a panic about this part of my journey.

It was all fine and I had a lovely trip seeing my family.

These are very reassuring. I’ve stopped feeling sick with panic now.

I'm glad you've stopped worrying. Sometimes we fixate on stuff when we are anxious.
Just to add another positive comment - I'm 14/16 in jeans, not even overweight (I'm very tall) and have no problem fitting in plane seats (even smaller planes)🙂

lostinabook · 19/05/2024 09:02

I am a size 22 and fit and no need for extenders etc.
You'll be fine.

MorvernBlack · 19/05/2024 09:02

Just realised you've already been and updated! Glad you had a lovely time!

Goodness this thread is a prime example of those who dont even bother to read the OPs posts, they are so excited to jump in with their opinion.

So pleased you were comfortable OP, I have similar fears about my upcoming flight as I'm bigger than you.

Part of the problem is, if you want to quote something from the previous pages, then you can't "hold" the quote and read to the end and having to trawl back through all the posts to find is a pain.
I end up posting two replies usually, the second one saying "oh!, you've updated" 😆

Ok. For future ref KLM seats are no narrower than others. Legroom does vary according to airline.

Disturbia81 · 19/05/2024 09:46

@MorvernBlack Ignore them, nothing wrong with accidentally still giving advice even after OP has updated. It's useful for others reading with the same problem/worry

The quote issue is annoying though. Why can't a quote be held in the message box, currently if you click on the next page it vanishes.
Although as you say, there is nothing wrong with giving advice after the event, it may be useful to other people reading the thread.

I was on a plane once where somebody very large was asked to move from an extra legroom seat because it was next to an emergency exit.

You can’t sit in the emergency exit row if you use a seat belt extender. The example was clear the person didn’t need one so was fine.

Bringbackthebeaver · 19/05/2024 10:21

You'd have to be like a size 28+ to not fit in a plane seat. You'll be fine.
