I know, why don't we send them all to Rwanda?

Does anyone else think this sounds like a suggestion someone made as a joke, to liven up a dull or fraught meeting and somehow, someone decided to run with it?

Right so Rotherham, etc isn't to do with cultural differences, lack of integration, women and girls being third class citizens?

Do you think the "white British" grooming gangs do what they do due to "cultural differences, lack of integration, women and girls being third class citizens" or are they just scummy people the likes of which are found in all types of communities

Northernnature · 23/04/2024 18:29

Ffs why do some people deny that some cultures are much more misogynistic. Its why no women are trying to emigrate to Saudi and Pakistan.

If war breaks out here, what would you do then? Wave your white flag and hope they take pity on you?

No, I’ll die fighting thanks. Feel free to get on your dinghy to France though

BronwenTheBrave · 23/04/2024 12:30

Let them work. Earn money and pay taxes. Unless nobody has noticed, we have a massive worker shortage already?

The chances of migrants on a dinghy being net contributors to HM Treasury is quite low I should think.

I do think something has to be done though. Another child, 4 yrs old died today on an overloaded boat - I just watched the BBC footage it was crazy, loads of people desperately trying to clamber on board and the smugglers walking around the circle of people with large sticks to fight off the French police - it’s just awful

We could have been processing claims in France. The French were willing, we refused, in order to cynically manipulate the situation to throw red meat to the racists.

Instead, we're spending an absolute fortune on a scheme that won't work.

Will you now? Even if there's no army for you to join, and no weapons for you to use? How will you feed your wife and kids, given your job no longer exists and the supply chain has collapsed? Such bravado is easy on paper.

Well I know it won’t be illegal immigrants fighting for me. And yes, I’ll die fighting. Our weapons might only be bow and arrows but it’s better than surrender

Where is this coming from?

Look at the EU moving to hold off their own borders. At the disagreements between Italy and France on who should take people

We’re not the sole country dealing with this and other countries don’t vote to help us out

LlynTegid · 23/04/2024 18:43

I don't think it was a joke in a meeting.

The original idea from what I recall was Ascension Island, reporting as being said by Priti Patel. The civil service were no doubt instructed (or perhaps given the allegations, bullied) into coming up with ideas, and proposed off shoring as one of them. Typically an option will be the far-fetched one, just in this case it has been adopted, albeit Rwanda.

Ascension Island if space could be constructed would not have had any of the hurdles regarding safety as British territory.

Nobody is arguing we take in illegal immigrants. We're talking about asylum seekers, who when processed and shown to have the right to stay here, should be welcomed.

Macron proposed it in 2022. As it was the only way to reduce dangerous crossings and would speed up our processing. It was quite well publicised, so I'm not sure how you missed it.

What on earth are you on about? Do you know any people outside of your bubble? British people immigrate to Saudi and other Islamic countries all the time, if that’s the point your making

And anyway, what has that got to do with this policy? How does sending a few hundred asylum seekers to Rwanda solve the problem of grooming gangs? How does this affect in any way the issue of white men abusing and mistreating women and girls in this country?

Polishedshoesalways · 23/04/2024 16:23

And starmers solution is?

<tumbleweed, as we spot the open door policy even as the NHS collapses under the sheer weight of numbers and housing stock runs out>

Starmer hinted at his solution when he described himself as a YIMBY. I'd respect him more if he just came out and said "listen, I don't care if you hate seeing the countryside ruined. We despise you NIMBYs. Though we have to be careful what we say in front of the cameras, we love the thought of ruining middle-class NIMBY's lives. We pose as morally superior, but many of us lefties are really motivated by hatred. Give me ten years and I'll turn central and southern England into one giant new build housing estate. Sick of traffic jams, and of feeling like you're suffocating from the sheer number of people? Boo hoo. You ain't seen nothin yet."

My local woods have been hacked down to make way for a new estate, and at the other end of my village a giant new estate has gone up that is more like a mini town. I would estimate that at least a third of people who've moved onto those estates weren't born in this country. The traffic round here is now so bad I hardly go out. I've given up yoga, for example, because I can't face the queues after work. My office overlooks a park. Every day I watch a group of about fifteen young immigrant men sitting around in that park playing music. I'm working in a job I hate to pay for them! Still, I am an evil NIMBY, so I should just shut my mouth and pay my taxes.

Sounds like they’d be swamped even more than now

I’m surprised they wanted it, I’m not sure how they would have dealt with the numbers. Maybe they thought they could move people quickly

It also depends what the appetite is in the U.K. for sped up higher number processing. Do you think there’s a number where it gets too high?

As a mother of 3 young children, with no combat experience, I would flee entirely unashamedly. Nobody is obligated to fight a war they didn't start.

What makes you say that?

The ones who make it here are the ones who have the means to pay the smuggleslrs and the drive to get up and make it happen. They're very likely to contribute, given the opportunity, as migrant communities have all over the world for centuries

All of which they've have arrived in illegally beicase there is no other option.

But it was the assertion that they won't contribute I was challenging, because they will, once they get established. Immigrants are the reason the SE is the wealthiest part of the country, the reason the US is so successful. Immigrants work harder and are more driven than average, by definition. They are the ones who got up and did something, rather than staying behind and moaning about it.
