I know, why don't we send them all to Rwanda?

Does anyone else think this sounds like a suggestion someone made as a joke, to liven up a dull or fraught meeting and somehow, someone decided to run with it?

Maybe they can round up all the benefits claimants and ship them off too? Two birds, one stone

I'm a benefit claimant and also work full time. About 3 million benefit claimants are in work that is a big stone and would leave us without most of the retail, service, civil service/defence and healthcare workers. At least I'd get to go with them, you and everyone else left behind would be fucked!

I think it’s a good idea in terms of acting as a deterrent. Which is really what we want - to stop people taking these risks in the first place. The BBC has just flashed that a child is among the latest drowned.

Whether it’ll work is another question but worth a try as all other solutions seem to have failed.

It won't be a deterent though, drowning in the boats isn't a deterent, and so few people will end up in Rwanda, even if the policy is successful by the goverment's own objectives, that it will still be worth the risk.

What is the alternative for all these 1000s of young men in their 20s, unless nobody has noticed, we have a massive homeless problem already?

It's not going to happen though. It's going to cost millions and nothing close to "1000s" of young men will go to Rwanda

Doubt if a single flight will ever take off. The government struggle enough to find charters for regular deportation flights, no charter provider is going to touch this, it would be commercial suicide.

They haven't even sourced the planes yet? 🤣

Yesterday night on the news and immigrant had raped a child in UK and government wanted him deported but he won an appeal as living in his own country may affect his MH. 🤷 The focus should be on deporting people who are dangerous or breaking the law.

They are using military planes. They apparently have 1500 judges on standby for appeals. Where the hell are these judges the rest of the time queues are building up in our courts?

dollybird · 23/04/2024 09:59

I'm sure Labour will reverse this as soon as they get into power, so it all seems a big waste of time and money, whether you agree with it or not.

Yes. It's exhausting and meanwhile vast amounts of public money is wasted when schools and hospitals are in a desperate condition. It's cynical because as we can see from the thread, there are plenty of people who like 'easy' answers to big problems. The Tories calculate there are votes in it even if they know the policy itself is cobblers.

Jojoanna · 23/04/2024 10:07

What is the answer to stopping the boats?

Ifailed · 23/04/2024 10:07

If the purpose of this policy is to dissuade Asylum seekers from crossing the channel illegally, why not just process them in France, as the French have offered to facilitate?

Soigneur · 23/04/2024 10:08

Weighnow · 23/04/2024 09:48

No, they’ve been in talks with lots of charter airlines but none of them want to touch it with a barge pole. Latest talks are with Airtanker who lease transport and passenger aircraft to the RAF but even if they agree, it will result in taking aircraft out of RAF service so a strong possibility of a bun fight between the Home Office and MOD.

Reopening safe routes for asylum seekers.

Soigneur · 23/04/2024 10:12

@Weighnow even RwandAir, who are the state-owned Rwandan airline, said no. 🤣🤣🤣

Reddog1 · 23/04/2024 10:12

I understand that Rwanda is a stunning country with massive potential and it needs a young/middle-aged workforce to build it up.

But I also know that I wouldn’t move there as things stand and I wouldn’t want my DCs to move there, so I’m not going to be hypocritical by supporting this policy.

patchworkpal · 23/04/2024 10:14

What is it Rwanda want people for? Don't they want some sort of scoring system so they get eg trained skilled professionals? Or are they just wanting the numbers. It seems a bit harsh to relocate people who have journied for weeks/months to get here. Must be a bit bewildering for them. How does the government decide who gets deported?

Itradehorses · 23/04/2024 10:14

Jojoanna · 23/04/2024 10:07

Wrong question. You can't stop the boats. You can just reduce them. You target human traffickers, and you negotiate at the international level for multi lateral solutions. Island fortress ideas just get in the way of that.

Yeah I don't think it's really fair to involuntarily relocate someone

TheHateIsNotGood · 23/04/2024 10:14

There are charter flight companies all over the world who absolutely would do this. Many charter planes aren't emblazoned in full 'livery' with a name.

Ifailed · 23/04/2024 10:15

Skin colour and religion.

The policy emerged under Boris Johnson's short-lived premiership, but do we know who was the brainchild behind the idea - have they owned it?

No idea but it will be someone who has made money from it.
That is what all Tory policies are based on now - how can me and/or my mates make money from this?

Well sure it’s not like Australia has their equivalent of P&O ferries picking up work

It’s not really a commercial gig

Because we said we'd pay them to take them. It's purely financial.

Reopening safe routes for asylum seekers.

Do you think the number applying would be high?

IClaudine · 23/04/2024 10:18

Sunak has said that there are commercial charter planes "on standby". Meanwhile the UN is warning that any commercial airlines which get involved in the Rwanda plan could be breaching international law.

Added to that there is the possibility of conflict escalating between Rwanda and DRC.

My prediction is that not one single flight will be taking refugees to Rwanda.
