What’s your annual leave entitlement and does it feel enough?

I get 26 days plus bank holidays. Lots of my colleagues have bought extra leave but I’m not sure in the point of it, as surely it’s technically just unpaid leave with the cost spread across the year.

How much do you get?

I get 25 days plus bank holidays and it isn't anywhere near enough for me. We can't currently buy holiday, but I absolutely would if I was able. Time off means a lot to me and we're comfortable enough financially that purchasing holiday (i.e. having unpaid leave) wouldn't be a big deal.

SpringOfContentment · 21/04/2024 19:21

12 weeks. Nearly half paid, rest unpaid.

DH gets 26 days, plus bank holidays, plus a couple of days TOIL a month.

It's lovely to have so much time to spend as a family. The best summer we had was when DH was between jobs, and all 4 of us had the entire school summer 6 weeks off. Absolute bliss.

30 days including bank holidays (although I'm pt so pro rata that). Because of my working pattern and helpful grandparents to cover school holidays plus the ability to wfh when needed, I didn't use all my holiday last year and lost 4 days.... won't be doing that again!

However, when I was younger and care/child free, at a previous employer, I used to 'buy' extra holiday and use it all (40 days ). Ah, those were the days.

32 days plus bank holidays.

people are willing to essentially take a pay cut for extra days off. Not sure why that’s confusing.

DuchesseNemours · 21/04/2024 19:24

29 plus BHols.

Nope. I reckon I could easily use another 10 days.

Onyoupop · 21/04/2024 19:24

I get 27 days plus bank holidays but have bought a extra week this year. Yes it's just a week's unpaid leave spread across the year but id rather that and have more time off with the kids in school holidays. If I didn't I'd just be paying out for a holiday club anyway. No brainer for me.

roycroppersshopper · 21/04/2024 19:26

43 days including bank holidays. 3 used at Christmas.

25 days
5 extra for over 10 years service
8 bank Holidays
3 at Christmas

Curlewwoohoo · 21/04/2024 19:26

33 if I was full time, I'm not so it's pro rated down. I'm mulling over buying more. I don't actually have a fortnight off this year. But it's more cost effective to work and use kids holiday clubs.

Invisimamma · 21/04/2024 19:26

40 days (pro rata), it feels enough, as my last place was 35. Both were inclusive of public holidays.

But more would always be good!

Popcorn640 · 21/04/2024 19:26

33 days plus bank holidays - continuous service in a public sector role. It's so valuable!! I love being able to book a week off just to relax and recharge without needing to feel like I've "done something" with the time.

DP's allowance is the absolute minimum (28 INCLUDING bank holidays) despite being in quite a senior well paid role. It's genuinely leading him to job hunt. It also takes the shine off how generous mine is as we can't enjoy enough time together.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 21/04/2024 19:26

I get the equivalent of 25 days plus bank holiday but prorata as I'm PT. I don't work Mondays so don't have any restrictions on using my leave allowance. Plus now the dc are at school I can flex my hours for appointments rather than take leave. All of the above means it feels it goes a long way

Invisimamma · 21/04/2024 19:28

Buying holiday has a number of advantages, the first being more time off for holidays, to be with your family, hobbies, prevent burnout.

Less childcare to organise and pay for the holidays.

It reduces your salary which can be beneficial for tax purposes.

WhiteLeopard · 21/04/2024 19:28

30 days plus bank holidays, and we are closed for a few days at Christmas on top of that.

Kitkat1523 · 21/04/2024 19:28

I’m nhs , so 33 days a year plus BH…..option to buy 1 or 2 weeks extra a year.
most full times work condensed hours so 37.5hrs over 4 days….or a 9 day fortnight…..I only work 2 days a week now as I am semi retired at 59…..but when I was full time it was never enough….even working condensed hours

popandchoc · 21/04/2024 19:28

I get 26 days plus bank holidays (pro rata to 4 days so actually about 20 days plus bank holidays). Then we get a birthday day off and 4 mental health days a year.

LaMariposa · 21/04/2024 19:28

25 days plus BH, and an extra company closure day Xmas Ev.
I buy an extra 5, and take another 5 as unpaid parental leave, I'd rather spend the school holidays with my children rather than paying to put them in childcare, and would take more time off if I could.

WorriedMillie · 21/04/2024 19:29

25 days, plus BH
5 must be taken between Christmas and NY
The rest, I just juggle to cover some of the school hols and it’s a struggle

TheSnowyOwl · 21/04/2024 19:29

40 including bank holidays.

Crazymadchickenlady · 21/04/2024 19:30

37 days plus bank holidays. Yes it feels enough.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/04/2024 19:31

33 days plus bank holidays, also accrue TOIL but not as much in current SLT role, much more at operational management level, I also work full time over 4 days and can swap my NWD and can have Flexi for things like school assemblies, sports day etc, it's ok. I'd never say no to more paid leave though!

Zampa · 21/04/2024 19:32

29 including Bank Holidays (80% FTE) but as I don't work on Mondays, I can take my Bank Holiday allowance at other, more convenient, times

I also buy 10 additional days, which equates to 2.5 weeks extra holiday.

So that's almost 10 weeks a year, which is plenty I think.

PotatoPudding · 21/04/2024 19:39

I work 3 days a week and get 17 days, including bank holidays and Christmas shutdown, which works out to be 5 of my days this year but was only 4 last year. I was able to choose my days when I started, so deliberately chose Mondays as one of my days off, otherwise I would lose 4 more every year to bank holiday Mondays, which would give me less than 3 full weeks to of my choice.

wigywhoo · 21/04/2024 19:40

32.5 days plus Bank Holidays

coxesorangepippin · 21/04/2024 19:40

Bear in mind I live in Canada, we get four weeks, which is fairly generous.

Also get around ten 'bank holiday' type days.

Have 2 family obligation days, and five paid sick days.

If you are in England and have children under 18 you are allowed to take unpaid parental leave which would be the same as buying holiday days (not sure if it’s the same in th rest of the UK).
