What’s your annual leave entitlement and does it feel enough?

I get 26 days plus bank holidays. Lots of my colleagues have bought extra leave but I’m not sure in the point of it, as surely it’s technically just unpaid leave with the cost spread across the year.

How much do you get?

Started on 23 and it goes up to 28 after 5 years. You can also take 3 days TOIL a month, which is brilliant. Longer days, but its so nice to take a day off here and there

WelshNerd · 21/04/2024 19:42

43 total. Definitely enough but wouldn't want any less Grin

TheChosenTwo · 21/04/2024 19:43

34 days plus all bank holidays plus the days between Christmas and new year. We can carry up to 5 days over from the previous year and I usually do so it’s more than enough for me. I’m usually left booking random days off in December to use up what I can before I lose it.
Also 15 days of paid carers leave which is brilliant, previously I had 2 days in my old place of work. I used 6 last year when dc was unexpectedly in hospital but haven’t used any this year.

23 days + BHs + time off between Christmas and New Years (varies between 3 and 4 days depending on which days these fall)
I would like more days and would happily pay for an extra 5 days a year

GreatTheCat · 21/04/2024 19:44

31 days plus bank holidays.

We can buy up to 20 days extra.

RedRosie · 21/04/2024 19:47

34 days plus bank holidays. Never feels like enough, but it's way better than many.

Reallybadidea · 21/04/2024 19:47

I get 33 days plus BH. I take 3 or 4 weeks as full weeks and dot the rest around the year for long weekends or just to work fewer days per week. I think if I had less than this then I'd probably need to go part time.

In theory DH gets unlimited annual leave. In practice he barely takes the legal minimum.

WildAloofRebel · 21/04/2024 19:49

Unlimited, yes it’s enough. No one takes the piss either. Works really well.

Cadela · 21/04/2024 19:49

I used to get 40 days + BH and that was fab.

Now I have 365 days due to uncontrolled epilepsy. Would rather be back at work!

DramaAlpaca · 21/04/2024 19:50

I've just left a job where I got 20 days plus bank holidays. It's one of the reasons I left as it wasn't enough.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 21/04/2024 19:51

27 plus 9 public holidays plus TOIL

I struggle to use it all.

MuggedByReality · 21/04/2024 19:52

A pathetic 26 days + bank holidays. It’s not enough to provide a sensible work / life balance so I ‘buy’ an additional 5 days every year. On the positive side, I WFH FT and my employer doesn’t shut down over Christmas/ New Year or in summer so we have a lot of flexibility in when we use our leave.

juicelooseabootthishoose · 21/04/2024 19:53

30 days plus bank hols. Less than 1 yrs service. So pretty generous. Its keeping me there even though i dont love it. I always bought a week when i only got 25 to top up so this is great for me:

Anniecott · 21/04/2024 19:54

20 + bholidays, I work every Saturday so only get Sunday as a family day and no it's not enough. We can take unpaid leave in special circumstances but I can't afford to do that. Plus most of my holiday this year is being used up for hospital appointments and sick leave as I have a yet undiagnosed chronic illness.

43 days including bank holidays. 3 used at Christmas.

25 days
5 extra for over 10 years service
8 bank Holidays
3 at Christmas

Huh, that's 41 unless my maths is wrong 😆

Unless you're somewhere that offers more than 8 B/H? Sorry assumed England.

loropianalover · 21/04/2024 19:58

28 + 10 bank hols + paid office closure days between Xmas and New Year + Good Friday paid. We also have Flex Day where I can work up 7hrs then take a day off (I can do this up to 15 days per year).

Pretty happy with that for now, higher ups in my company get 30 days or 34 days AL which would be even better.

Welliwould · 21/04/2024 20:05

I get 25 days plus bank holiday but prorata as I'm PT. We can buy up to 2 weeks extra, again pro-rated for me. I do this every year, if we don't use these bought days we get the money back in our Jan salary - I quite like this and have sometimes used the money to treat myself if I didn't need it for bills. I haven't used the bought holiday days for the last few years, but I prefer knowing they are there if I need them than worrying about negotiating unpaid leave in an emergency.
We can apply for matched carers leave too, up to a weeks worth. Sometimes we get a half day gifted at Christmas and for the last couple of years we've been gifted our birthday (or nearest working day) off too - these are discretionary though so we might not get them every year.
I feel like it's plenty.

It's always been 10 bank holidays anywhere I have worked, in Scotland.

twobluechickens · 21/04/2024 20:09

41 days inc bank holidays. Plus plenty of flexi due to long hours and I struggle to use it all.

I have been looking for another job but in my sector the pay is shit. I wouldn't get much if any salary increase by changing role, and I'd have fewer holidays. So I'm staying put for now.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/04/2024 20:10

Isn't it tax free when you buy holidays too?
There are a number of reasons why it's good.

Anyway, I get 26+8 PH (and then every 5 years we work we get an additional day added to our quota). This would be plenty of I didn't have children but now I do, I buy 5-10 days on top.

HouseofHolbein · 21/04/2024 20:12

28 days including bank holidays. The way my shifts work tho I mostly get one week in three off and only need to use 1 day for it.

This year I have about 15 weeks off plus a couple of long weekends too 😊

reluctantbrit · 21/04/2024 20:13

30 days plus BH (pro rata, I work p/t) and that's normally enough. But DD is nearly 17 so no need to deal with holiday coverage.

I had parental leave when DD did her GCSEs as she has ASD/ADHD and needed extra support and I found it easier without worrying about work but 4 weeks is a month salary lost.
And with other colleagues having school age children, noone would approve parental leave for school holiday cover on a regular basis.

No possibility to buy extra days. I could use some this year as I have to organise my mum's move to a care home out of the blue and it's not local so a lot of time is lost travelling and obviously some provider/landlord agency etc only work on weekdays.

Heatherbell1978 · 21/04/2024 20:18

30 plus bank holidays. Before kids came along I paid to take an extra week so 35 plus bank holidays. I had the disposable income to go on lots of holidays and take a bit of a pay cut. It was great. Now I make do as the pay cut wouldn't work.

AnotherEmma · 21/04/2024 20:18

Mine is quite generous because we get extra annual leave for long service, up to a maximum of 5 extra days, and we get "free" days (ie not deducted from AL entitlement) when we close between Christmas and new year.

I'm part-time so my AL and bank holidays are pro rata'd. My working days include Mondays so all the bank holiday Mondays mean a 2 day working week for me, but the downside is a bit less flexibility to use my AL when I want (the pro-rata'd BH days don't cover all the Mondays so I end up losing a bit of AL).

Can't complain though. In total it works out as about 5.5 weeks plus bank holidays and the period between Christmas and New Year.

The pay isn't great, and no bonus (we're a charity), so a decent holiday entitlement is one of the few ways they can reward us.
