What’s your annual leave entitlement and does it feel enough?

I get 26 days plus bank holidays. Lots of my colleagues have bought extra leave but I’m not sure in the point of it, as surely it’s technically just unpaid leave with the cost spread across the year.

How much do you get?

I get 26 days but we also get extra time off between Xmas and New Year and the Tuesday after Easter off but they are concessionary days that we don't need to use annual leave for. Then BH's off of course. We can also buy extra leave but I don't cos I don't want to lose the money. Doesn't feel like enough leave though.

Yuja · 21/04/2024 21:21

28 days including bank holidays, but we also get the week off between Xmas and new year on top of this. It's not enough, no.

candyisdandybutliquorisquicker · 21/04/2024 21:22

I work in corporate America. I get 19 days plus public holidays, so 30 in total. We also work summer hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day (the whole summer, essentially) where we finish at lunch on Fridays if we work a little longer M-Th which obviously we all do.

We love to travel so I'd always welcome more vacation time. That said, I plan well to make the most of my time, and as I'm senior I have a lot of flexibility in my hours. We travel a lot - lots of long weekends away - so I'm pretty satisfied.

26 days plus bank hols, plus I always buy the max extra (5). Poor DH only gets 21 plus BH, whilst it gives him enough for actual holidays it means he doesn't have enough to take random days off when he fancies, which I do.

massistar · 21/04/2024 21:28

30 days plus bank hols and I buy an extra week. This feels like the right amount. I work compressed hours too so get most Fridays mainly off.

SlebBB · 21/04/2024 21:28

28 inc BHols

Concernedfriend2023 · 21/04/2024 21:28

I get 34 days plus bank holidays. Additionally the office is shut from Xmas Eve until Jan 2nd and we don't have to use any leave for that. I also take a few unpaid days to cover through school holidays, but we don't struggle really. DP gets 32 days plus BH.

daisychain01 · 21/04/2024 21:29

I'm of the "you can never have too much leave" persuasion. Civil Service so I get 45 days

30 day for long service
1 privilege day **
6 volunteering days
8 BH

I end up carrying over about 6-10 days so that makes the "problem" worse!

** privilege Day was originally for the Queen's official birthday - the Government tried to take it away from us, but they failed because they don't have the right to remove something gifted by the Monarch - in fact I think the Queen got quite exercised about it in 2014

StoneTheCrone · 21/04/2024 21:31

31 days plus Bank Holidays.

I'm thinking of buying some more through salary sacrifice.

roycroppersshopper · 21/04/2024 21:32

burnttoad · 21/04/2024 21:16

That's 41 no?

Ha yes, can't count 🤣

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/04/2024 21:35

28 plus bank holidays. Also a day for our birthday and a couple of extra days to equalise us with our colleagues in Scotland and NI as they get 9 and 10 public holidays a year respectively.

Blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahlalala · 21/04/2024 21:39

I’m freelance so don’t get any paid leave. I took 7 days holiday last year in total.
I’ve family members who work for the nhs and they receive between 8-9.5 weeks a year. They struggle to book it all in!

Bootstoots · 21/04/2024 21:43

24 plus bank holidays and with young children it doesn't feel anywhere near enough. There are about 65 days of school holidays to begin with, aside from the fact I'd love a week or two off with no kids to decorate/declutter/get other big jobs done. I'd also love to have even a few days a year just to myself to maybe pick up a book for the first time in years, go for a massage, or go shopping on my own.

As it is, it all goes on school holidays and then I have to pay for childcare for the rest of them.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/04/2024 21:47

I don’t work but DH gets 25 plus bank holidays which I feel is quite tight. He has to hold so many back to cover the time the company is closed over Christmas too.

He used to be in the RAF so got 30 something plus bank holidays, then there would be stand down days/half days on top so I suppose we were spoilt.

ToWonderWhyIBother · 21/04/2024 21:48

I get 20 days plus bank hols, work for a tight arse who doesnt do extra leave or yearly pay rise either

Orangejuicein · 21/04/2024 21:51

33 days plus bank holidays, so 41? Definitely feels like a good amount. I also work flexi hours and can buy more leave if I want to. But flexi hours mean I can work some longer days and get an extra day off if I want!

Wishthiswasntthecase · 21/04/2024 21:52

32 days, plus 10 closure days and the bank holidays

MsVictoria · 21/04/2024 22:02

25 days plus bank holidays. We used to be able to buy an additional week but they stopped that. It's not enough for me now so I'm looking around to see what else I could do.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 21/04/2024 22:13

13 weeks but I’m not a teacher.

Neodymium · 21/04/2024 22:17

Can you accrue holidays year to year there? In Aust everyone gets a min of 4 weeks plus public holidays. You can in most places save them up, though if you get to a certain number they might make you take them.

im a teacher so i get 12 weeks (technically) but i often end up working in the holidays.

we also typically get 12 weeks long service leave after 10 years (this is workplace dependent though)

Normandy144 · 21/04/2024 22:17

I get 25 + 1 day for loyalty. I buy another 5 and then get the standard 8 bank holidays. We also get 1 discretionary day we can take whenever so in total 32 + 8 bank hols. We don't get the period between Christmas and new year off though - that has to come out of annual leave if you want to take it off.

sarahsarahsarahsar · 21/04/2024 22:18

Wow, get the statutory 20 plus bank holidays. I knew it was low but I had no idea how poorly it compared to the others here!

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/04/2024 22:24

6 weeks pro rata which includes ongoing education ( approximately 1 week).

Changingmynameyetagain · 21/04/2024 22:26

30 days inc BH.
I only work 4 days a week, it works out at just over 7 weeks holiday.
Last year I struggled to book it all, I can’t have holiday in December except the bank holidays (as we don’t open those 3 days) I ended up with a random week in January just to get it all booked.

My children are teenagers so no need for childcare anymore and they often don’t want to hang around with me in the school holidays anyway, they’re usually off with their mates.

tastydiner · 21/04/2024 22:26

26 plus 2 and Christmas and 2 at New Year. It’s not enough. I’d rather it was 30 plus the four. My work are quite miserable though. While they say the are a family business, holidays and time off are shit. We didn’t get any of the extra bank holidays for coronations, jubilees etc and we didn’t close for the queens funeral.
