I have a date and I can't get my wedding and engagement rings off...

What should I do?

Split from H last year. My fingers (and the rest of me) have grown significantly in the 20 years since my rings went on and there is no way of getting them off without intervention (I've tried all the washing up liquid and dental floss interventions).

Options are:

  • front up with the date before I go and explain the situation in advance
  • find out if I can get them cut off somehow which I don't really want to do because they were expensive
  • chop off hand
  • brazen it out and say nothing.

WWYD?

I had some health issues and fingers became very swollen. I had my engagement and wedding ring cut off. Most jewellers do it for free. I had mine resized and it cost about £300 for both. You could get them rejoined together without making them bigger as no extra metal needed to make bigger (presuming you don't want to wear them again) then it wouldn't be as much. You can't see where mine was cut and repaired at all.

Beautifulsunflowers · 19/04/2024 17:07

I get all the trying to get them off would make your finger quite sore…….
have you tried ice and then oil? One ring at a time, twist it with the oil.

i saw your post and immediately thought gloves!! Or bandages?!!!

good luck on your date!

Chemistrychic · 19/04/2024 17:19

Cut them off. If they're on and your fingers have grown then it's the only way. They must be uncomfortable?

Visual

That actually looks sore.

I wouldn't even mention it and then see about having them cut off at the jewellers

MintyCedric · 19/04/2024 17:32

This is what I had mine cut with at a jewellers

Comdent, Finger Ring Cutter, EMT, Emergency First Aid Instrument, Jewelry Tools

Next day delivery, £13, 10 minute job tops!

I have successfully got off a very stuck ring, using a string method where you pretty much wrap your whole finger in string, think a pp has put a video on above. Look on YouTube. Honestly the ring was really stuck and my knuckle was killing me where I had been trying so long, but it did come off eventually!

calishire · 19/04/2024 17:33

Try to get your hands cold with ice perhaps and then try spraying your finger with windex or similar glass cleaner.

hexsnidgett · 19/04/2024 17:38

I had my ears pierced at butlins a million years ago, so it's possible they do have a jewellers.

80smonster · 19/04/2024 17:52

Ask date to bring bolt cutters - as a sign of intention.

Smokeysgirl · 19/04/2024 17:54

If your date is a man he probably won't notice!

memememe · 19/04/2024 17:59

If you're in Bognor butlins then there is a jeweller 10 mins walk along the beach in the town (can get your lo a Maccy d.s while you're there)

Can't understand why you still have them on if you separated last year? First thing I did was get rid of mine!!

Shittyproblem · 19/04/2024 18:01

My ring finger was swollen & went blue with altitude sickness, but the hotel soon solved it.
Ice bath for 10 minutes, then cooking oil massaged gently around the rings.

coldcallerbaiter · 19/04/2024 18:06

Ice and oil.

or buy wedding and engagement rings in different sizes and wear on all your fingers a la knuckle duster

ohtowinthelottery · 19/04/2024 18:08

Iced water always worked for mine when they were stuck and definitely not coming off any other way.

styleitoutttt · 19/04/2024 18:09

It's not sore, I really do promise. I have nothing to gain from pretending otherwise.

My H and I had a very amicable split, I'm sorry others haven't had the same experience. It sounds very traumatic being desperate to remove all memory of marriage.

Why would you keep them in so long then decide to take off for a date ,anyhow but of fairy liquid usually does the trick

Eastereggchocolatefan · 19/04/2024 18:15

Mine were stuck after 30+ years and I slept with my arm higher than my heart and first thing the following morning a friend did the string thing for me and it came off, not easily but I didn't think it was possible as it was so tight. Perhaps ask someone else do try the string thing for you?

I don't know. Why does it matter to you?

Fairy liquid doesn't work, as stated originally.

At some point they are going to have to come off. I have always found cold water and washing up liquid works but mine are not as tight as that. I think you need to get them cut off whether in the next week or after your date. You really only have three choices. Get it removed at a jewellers if they can do it, tell your date the truth or say nothing and let him come to his own conclusions.

I would be worried that is stopping the circulation in your finger,

Comedycook · 19/04/2024 18:17

I doubt most men would even notice

AdoraBell · 19/04/2024 18:18

Either brazen or out and say you can’t get the bloody things off, or keep trying with soap or hand cream.

styleitoutttt · 19/04/2024 18:20

Also, guys, I'm not divorced. Never said I was.

Fairy liquid, or try the dental floss method, you will still have an obvious indentation though OP, good luck for your date Flowers
