I have a date and I can't get my wedding and engagement rings off...

What should I do?

Split from H last year. My fingers (and the rest of me) have grown significantly in the 20 years since my rings went on and there is no way of getting them off without intervention (I've tried all the washing up liquid and dental floss interventions).

Options are:

  • front up with the date before I go and explain the situation in advance
  • find out if I can get them cut off somehow which I don't really want to do because they were expensive
  • chop off hand
  • brazen it out and say nothing.

WWYD?

I like @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles plan 😂

But seriously, I'd remove them s d have them made into something of your liking

In the meantime I'd wear a cheap and cheerful ring of choice, in the right size, in its place

Much better for your hands/fingers to get rid of them too as they'll be restricting blood flow if so tight

EauNeu · 19/04/2024 14:15

I like the idea to just add loads more rings

But yeah you need to get them cut off dude

The resale value of rings tends to be pretty low, certainly in comparison to what you pay for them. I would just get them chopped off.

Thanks, I've checked this out, it's the engagement ring that's worth something it's a Tiffany thing with all the certificates and has held it's value (well, increased). But I think it's the diamond that has value rather than the ring so maybe I should just suck it up.

Keep your hand in your pocket like King Charles does?

Excellent, hadn't thought of this!

They’ll need to be resized anyway so they would have to cut them to do that. It’s not that expensive. How are you going to sell them anyway if you can’t get them off?!!!

Are they really really stuck..? Cold water hand soak, then a very very directed dribble of hot water on the rings only. Soap/oil/lube,.don't get too much on your other hand so you can still grip. Try the first ring first rather than both together. Twist as you pull.

If they are still really stuck, then either laugh it off in person with your date, or get them cut off at a jewellers. My vote would be to cut them off. Use this as the moment you deal with this. Even if your date doesn't work out, I'd imagine it would feel (literally) free-ing to move past the wedding rings?

Whatever happens I hope you have a fabulous time 😊

Totally stuck. They were tight twenty years ago, now there is a wodge of fat holding them on I will try to add a photo.

Well obviously I was planning to sell my hand with them.

Jokes.

I just don't particular have the time, money or headspace to arrange this in the five days before my date.

I'm surprised the floss technique didn't work. I was desperate to get mine off during pregnancy as my finger was starting to lose colour and be very painful. Floss technique was the only thing that worked after trying everything people have listed here. Aren't you in pain?

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to go to the jewelers as I bet they have good ideas for removal as a last ditch before cutting off.

PEOPLE I DON'T HAVE TIME TO CUT THEM OFF BEFORE THE DATE OBVIOUSLY I WAS NOT PLANNING TO WEAR THEM FOREVER

I have very fat fingers these days, I promise, but the bit before the fat starts is not fat and so they are comfortable where they are just cannot come off.

You can't pop into a jewellers tomorrow?

styleitoutttt · 19/04/2024 15:02

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 19/04/2024 14:07

Another option is to put rings on every single finger like Mr T. Also wear as many necklaces as possible. Your date might not even notice them then.

Could you get your hands on a crown before the date?

This is inspired, thank you so much I will try this.

Tale them off that would put me right off. Loads of hand cream will do it

Not unless I can find one at Butlin's and a babysitter for my DC whilst I'm there.

Wear one glove and style it out.

PrimalLass · 19/04/2024 15:05

Try dandelion water retention tablets. A couple of days on those and my fingers look much slimmer.

tealandteal · 19/04/2024 15:08

Pop a plaster over them as if you are in PE.

FloofyBird · 19/04/2024 15:45

If I turned up to a date who said this I'd be thinking twice tbh!

Velvian · 19/04/2024 15:58

Soak your hand in ice water for a few minutes and then lots of soap.

Citrusandginger · 19/04/2024 16:01

Try first thing in the morning. It might be easier.
