I have a date and I can't get my wedding and engagement rings off...

What should I do?

Split from H last year. My fingers (and the rest of me) have grown significantly in the 20 years since my rings went on and there is no way of getting them off without intervention (I've tried all the washing up liquid and dental floss interventions).

Options are:

  • front up with the date before I go and explain the situation in advance
  • find out if I can get them cut off somehow which I don't really want to do because they were expensive
  • chop off hand
  • brazen it out and say nothing.

WWYD?

Not unless I can find one at Butlin's and a babysitter for my DC whilst I'm there.

Are you having a date at Butlins?
Is he a red coat or Billy the bear or whatever he’s called?

Beatrixslobber · 19/04/2024 16:07

I would go for wearing loads of rings and everything finger.

GenghisCalm · 19/04/2024 16:13

Order a ring cutter from Amazon they are about £10.

I always find mine jump ship if I wash my hands under hot water with bar soap for longer than BJ's recommended 20 secs.

I discovered this when I was enjoying the warmth and it was a bit cold (bloody house is usually cold).

But yes if nothing works then tell date they're welded on by now. Or cut them, if you want to!

PEOPLE I DON'T HAVE TIME TO CUT THEM OFF BEFORE THE DATE OBVIOUSLY I WAS NOT PLANNING TO WEAR THEM FOREVER

Your date isn't for another five days? I'm struggling to understand why you don't have time TBH. I would imagine you could walk into any jewellers to get them cut off. Or I just googled and Timpson also offer ring cutting so maybe other shoe repair places can do it as well.
Honestly when I divorced I couldn't wait to get the things off so I'm surprised you've waiting to a date to do something about the rings.

WildCherryBlossom · 19/04/2024 16:18

Slightly cheaper than a ring cutter... this 80s / Madonna costume is £9.99 on Amazon and comes with gloves to hide the rings.

caringcarer · 19/04/2024 16:19

Dremel, cut them off.

Bandage your hand and pretend you've had an accident or something sort?

Although I would just tell the truth.

Remoteaccess · 19/04/2024 16:23

That would completely freak me out having them stuck like that (not helpful I appreciate) I'd panic ...

Robinkitty · 19/04/2024 16:32

It would be a big red flag for me if my date was wearing a wedding ring. If you can’t be arsed to get them removed then you’ll have to explain why you still have them on and it won’t sound good. It will give him doubts on you..

SheepAndSword · 19/04/2024 16:37

I don't think it would matter at all telling him beforehand.

If you were a shady character @styleitoutttt you'd whip them off pronto, presumably he knows you were divorced last year. I still wear a ring even though I'm single as I've got used to the weight on my finger.

ChristmasGutPunch · 19/04/2024 16:39

I wouldn't be able to sleep with stuck rings! It can't be good for you. Go and get them chopped off immediately.

Sadly not! The date is in five days. Butlin's is tomorrow.

I don't think it's been bad for me, they've been stuck there for 20 years with no ill effects 😂

I'm not looking for commitment, actually, so I don't mind if it scares off someone who is looking for that. He does know I'm not interested in a LTR already.

I'm taking my kids away this weekend and will be working all of next week.

He's probably married anyway if it's online dating so it won't be a big deal 😉

We cut rings off people's fingers for £25 where I work, but we would not do those ones I am afraid - too much risk of hurting you. You might need some specialist equipment to do those ones.
We would also be able to to an invisible solder to repair the cut - or add a piece in to resize. When you get it done, do a quick bit of research into whereabouts Tiffany hallmark their rings, and try to avoid that bit when cutting!

I think the wedding band would come off fine, it's the engagement ring needs cutting - it's very thin and sharp edged and digs in but the band has plenty of movement.

I came onto say this! I take my ring off every night and any hint of it not coming off I would stop wearing it!

Just leave them and if it comes up in conversation say you can't get them off. Have them removed if it suits you to.
