Do you wash your children’s clothes after each ‘use’?

Like many, my washing is never ending. Sometimes I’m washing clothes my kids have worn for a few hours, it looks and smells okay. My mum believes everything should be fresh and washed after each ‘use’, new PJs each night etc. My kids have a bath each night and I think it’s okay to wear PJs two nights on the trot (okay, sometimes even 3 🙊)

What do you do? Wash because it’s been worn or fold it up and pop back in their cupboard?

I wash everything every time… but I have a 3 year old boy who likes to be outside regardless the weather so nothing is ever clean anyway!

drawnfrommemory · 17/04/2024 19:06

Wash it if it has visible marks, smells or is pants/ socks.

Anything else gets worn again until they hit puberty and t-shirts/ shirts get washed every wear.

FudgeSundae · 17/04/2024 19:07

I only wash if dirty or smelly. Clean pjs once or twice a week. Undies and socks after every wear.

WeightoftheWorld · 17/04/2024 19:07

No, I don't. My kids are 5 and 2.

They wear two pairs of PJs a week unless they get dirty.

Every day they wear clean tops, clean socks/tights, clean undies for eldest, and clean vests.

Everything else will theoretically be reworn until it either smells or is visibly dirty. In reality most days this actually is an entire whole outfit change sadly as they're so mucky! But I check all the clothes at the end of the day, anything which isn't dirty is put away to be reworn.

Yozzer87 · 17/04/2024 19:08

Usually I'll wash but depends. If it's something like a jumper, tracksuit or jeans that are still clean I won't wash it. T shirts, school shirts or anything with stains on I'll wash. Usually I do end up washing most things after one wash because they aren't clean.

NuffSaidSam · 17/04/2024 19:09

Pants and socks after every wear.

Everything else after it's been worn twice or if it's visibly dirty, whichever comes first.

Exceptions: hoodies which I treat a bit more like a jacket so can be worn multiple times and PJ's which sometimes get more than two wears depending.

None of the kids smell and none have ever suffered an illness caught from wearing a t-shirt twice.

MillsAndBalloons · 17/04/2024 19:09

My kids have clean pyjamas on every night, so do I. I wash most clothes after one use unless it's like a hoodie or big jumper or something they only had on for a couple of hours

WaitingfortheTardis · 17/04/2024 19:09

Not pyjamas, but everything else yes. Mainly because she has always spilt something on it, fallen on something in it or otherwise generally made it unwearable for a second time! Dd only baths every other day though as her skin dries out too much otherwise.

Randomsabreur · 17/04/2024 19:09

Nothing survives contact with my younger child without many signs of battle so everything he wears gets worn once and I'm lucky if he only gets through one set a day. Older one is less messy so most things can be worn again, other than pants

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 17/04/2024 19:13

No! If it looks clean it’ll go again, with the obvious exception of pants. Certainly wouldn’t change pj’s daily either.
Life is too short for this nonsense.

salamithumbs · 17/04/2024 19:15

No, if it still looks and smells clean I don't bother! Obviously I wash pants and socks after every use but that's it. When they hit puberty I'll step it up. And pyjamas get a week's use here 🤷‍♀️ maybe I'm just grotty but my thinking is, they're clean when they put them on and they're only lying in bed!

HNY2023 · 17/04/2024 19:17

I should know better but I wash everything after every wear … full clean clothes every day for everyone in our house !

Pythonesque · 17/04/2024 19:19

I agree - pants and socks change daily. Pyjamas once a week. Up to about 3 I might have changed pyjamas more often, but probably only on an as-needed basis. When they started school skirts and trousers turned out to usually be fine washed once a week; so the spare was always clean if there was a problem. Jumpers far less often, again "as needed", and I aimed to have 3 shirts rotated through the week. Now my 18 yr old son should probably be reminded that with summer weather coming up he might need to change shirts every day rather than every other day!

Washingupdone · 17/04/2024 19:21

Three girls, clean knickers for night wear and another clean pair for day wear, socks clean every time, other only wash if smelly or looks dirty, PJs every week.

Flidina · 17/04/2024 19:22

We all wear clean Pj's, underwear and clothes everyday, occasionally I might refold something if it's only been worn for a few hours, makes for more washing, but I'd rather have that as I'm a complete germaphobe.

Tisfortired · 17/04/2024 19:23

I only wash something after one use if it is underwear or visibly dirty. Pyjamas and clothes will be reworn 2/3 times before washing if they are visibly clean.

As it is my boys are absolutely incapable of keeping things clean so things mainly get washed every day!

minipie · 17/04/2024 19:23

Clean pants and socks daily

T shirts/tops generally every day as they always manage to spill something on them, and eldest now entering pre teen slightly whiffy phase

Jumpers and trousers/skirts go several days unless food or paint spill

PJs get changed once a week- they wash before bed and don’t eat in them except Sundays when they get swapped for fresh.

When DSs were small (preschool) nothing lasted more than a day without being trashed. Now it’s clean pants, socks and T-shirts every day and anything else at least a couple of wears if possible. PJs are often several days, they have a shower every night before they put them on. I can’t see that puberty will change this…it’s what DH and I do too…

Even jeans and jumpers? That seems bonkers to me and you must be constantly hanging clothes/folding/ironing/putting away!!

Alliolly · 17/04/2024 19:28

I try not to, but the kids are still little, so usually messy and going through multiple outfits some days. If by any miracle they're not covered in food, mud, chalks or whatever by the end of the day, they both have a chair in their room where "worn but not dirty" clothes go, to be used again in the next couple of days.

Pyjamas are usually used 2-4 days depending on how they smell... Or 1 if someone optimistically decides to give them breakfast in their pyjamas.

Oh and DS's Squirrels (scouts) top gets washed probably once every 4-5 weeks as he only wears it for an hour each week.

ChicagoBears · 17/04/2024 19:29

My DCs are mess monsters so wash after every use including their pyjamas. I do try and wash on 30 where I can.

Jeannie88 · 17/04/2024 19:37

If no obvious marks I will use again, being younger they don't smell, bathed etc so no issue for us. It's a joy to see clean clothes still clean lol 😆

Cbljgdpk · 17/04/2024 19:38

I’ll let trousers and jumpers have 2-3 wears if not marked although that seems rare lately. Pjs also 2-3.

Snowpaw · 17/04/2024 19:38

I am staggered at people washing so much.

I only wash if something is actually dirty / has spills on or mud etc.

Clean undies and socks every day of course, but other than that everything gets looked over once its taken off and either put in the washing basket or hung back in the wardrobe.

DP has a manual job that creates a duffel bag full of properly dirty clothes and towels each week so they are the priority to get clean.

We all shower / bathe regularly so we're putting clean bodies into our clothes.
