Do you wash your children’s clothes after each ‘use’?

Like many, my washing is never ending. Sometimes I’m washing clothes my kids have worn for a few hours, it looks and smells okay. My mum believes everything should be fresh and washed after each ‘use’, new PJs each night etc. My kids have a bath each night and I think it’s okay to wear PJs two nights on the trot (okay, sometimes even 3 🙊)

What do you do? Wash because it’s been worn or fold it up and pop back in their cupboard?

8yo & almost 6yo
Pants & socks - every day
Vests - every other day (only really worn when cold so not likely to be smelly, will wash if wet or dirty)
School uniform - fresh shirts & trousers daily (they're normally grubby, mud/food/paint) 8yo usually manages a whole week on 1 jumper (they both wear pe kit, with different jumpers, at least 2 days a week) youngest has a fresh jumper daily as he always drops his school dinner down it 🙄🤷🏼‍♀️
Pjs - 2 or 3 wears, unless dirty. Maybe more often in the summer if sweaty.
Regular clothes, tops - daily (if worn all day, not just a few hours) bottoms/hoodies - until dirty/ smelly which is usually 3 or 4 wears for eldest, usually every wear for youngest 🤣

Ahahaahaaaa..... No.
Unless at nursery stage coming home covered in glitter or mud. Otherwise no.

bugaboo218 · 17/04/2024 21:45

Yes!

We all have clean clothes/ school uniform, underwear, socks , pjs , flannels and towels changed daily and washed after they have been worn or used once.

2.5 year old here. New pants and socks everyday. But if (by some miracle) she's worn an outfit for a few hours that's not dirty then better believe that's getting worn again. This is sometimes the case when she strips after lunch for a new outfit and then again before dinner.
Anything with obvious food, snot, mud and god knows what else gets washed.
Otherwise nope.
PJs are often worn multiple times. Unless she's had a bad dream and gotten sweaty. Especially in winter when A) they don't get hot and sticky overnight and B) everything is harder to get dry.
Though mine loves to strip off the second she wakes so she isn't having breakfast in them to get all messy!

I do what I do with my clothes.
Did I shove on an outfit for a few hours in the evening to go for dinner? If so that's likely fine for the nursery drop off the next day.

Have I worn something all day where I've been rushing around, hot, sticky and covered in toddler love? That's getting washed!

I think that's a bit excessive... Who doesn't love fresh bedding? Doesn't mean it justifies needlessly using so much energy and water.

It’s not needless? I stick her bedding in with what needs to be washed anyway.

She’s had a rough couple of years, the absolute least I can do is let her sleep in fresh bedding. I’d wash it every day if it made her happy.

You only use a towel once before you put it in the washing machine?

This really surprises me.

Our towels go in after around 8-10 uses. We dry them thoroughly in between each use on the heated towel rails in the bathrooms. They don’t smell at all. Guests get clean towels for their stay but family recycle. It’s an awful lot of water and electricity to wash heavy towels!

8-10!!!!!! That’s almost 2 weeks without washing a towel 😳

One towel does 2 dries at the absolute most here.

I have both! They shower every day too but still, the thought of someone thinking they're smelly because they didn't have fresh uniform on! I know it's just me but still, I don't like the thought.

I think it says more about them being judgmental than you. If your child is wearing clean clothes (and that doesn’t necessarily mean freshly washed everyday!) I certainly wouldn’t think that.

drawnfrommemory · 17/04/2024 21:59

I'm genuinely fascinated at how many wash loads people who wash everything (including uniforms and towels) after single use do a week? We are a family of 5, bedding and towels are washed weekly and everything else is washed on a needs must basis and we still do 8 - 10 loads a week. The mind boggles.

Oh goodness.. my towels definitely do more than two dries! Unless it's swimming or used to clean up another spill.

Sounds like I may be insane then 🤣

I just use a towel, stick it in the wash and tumble dry.

I probably am personally responsible for global warming.

ByUmberViewer · 17/04/2024 22:04

Towels I wash every 2 weeks. I don't know what you lot get on your towels but the only thing that touches my towels is clean water when I get out of the shower.

mammaCh · 17/04/2024 22:05

Pjs can be worn twice for everyone.
Kids clothes worn only once.
Adults rewear trousers and jumpers, not tops/underwear/socks.

Sunflowersinthehaze · 17/04/2024 22:07

Interested to know why you rewear your trousers and jumpers but your kids don’t? Even if they’re not dirty?

Your kids certainly won’t have the luxury of washing their things like this - the next generation will have to really be thrifty when it comes to energy and water use due to climate change.

A large part of this may be my inability to tumble dry! 😂
I also normally shower before work, then again when I get home. But I leave for work at 7am and get home at 7pm so at no point could I wash (and non tumble dry) my towels ready for the next day. They go a week and get shoved it on a Saturday!

thriftyhen · 17/04/2024 22:16

This is utterly mind boggling; all this washing! It's hugely environmentally unfriendly, even more so if using a tumble dryer, and must take up so much time and cost money. Does no-one just sponge off marks anymore and only wash when things are actually dirty? Clothes last longer if they're not washed frequently.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 17/04/2024 22:17

The whole family wear once and put in the dirty wash baskets.
Just habit I suppose

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 17/04/2024 22:17

I do give mine clean PJ's most nights as they don't wear underwear with them. If something looks clean after a day then they wear again. My 7 year old tends to wear her school shirt and skirt twice, the 4 year old generally destroys her clothes at nursery so normally only wear things once.

furryblanky · 17/04/2024 22:25

I would hate wearing the same pjs as the night before !

Mexicansky · 17/04/2024 22:25

HNY2023 · 17/04/2024 19:17

I should know better but I wash everything after every wear … full clean clothes every day for everyone in our house !

Even jeans???

Think about it. You're always clean when you use a towel.

Skin cells, or hair oil from rinsed unwashed hair? Ours start to smell after five days or so this time of year as the heating isn't on so they don't fully dry. We wash them weekly, but earlier if they smell.

I'm sure most people do reuse clothes and spot clean, judging from the people I've met and spoken to during 25+ years of parenting kids over a wide age range. However, on this thread we're not seeing a representative sample of the population.

NewName24 · 17/04/2024 22:52

People washing towels after one use is just shocking.
