Do you wash your children’s clothes after each ‘use’?

Like many, my washing is never ending. Sometimes I’m washing clothes my kids have worn for a few hours, it looks and smells okay. My mum believes everything should be fresh and washed after each ‘use’, new PJs each night etc. My kids have a bath each night and I think it’s okay to wear PJs two nights on the trot (okay, sometimes even 3 🙊)

What do you do? Wash because it’s been worn or fold it up and pop back in their cupboard?

I can't get my head round the martyrdom of washing everything every wear. Why?

It's wasteful, costs money, costs time, reduces the life of the clothes, and totally unnecessary.

Kalevala · 17/04/2024 20:27

I typically wash a pair of trousers or a hoodie weekly if worn every day, t-shirts and pyjamas after two or three days, mostly depending if it's summer or winter.

vincettenoir · 17/04/2024 20:30

Near enough. But lo is a very messy eater.

1984Winston · 17/04/2024 20:32

I wash everything after every use but I know I shouldn't really!

Dacadactyl · 17/04/2024 20:32

Knickers, boxers and socks after every wear.

Everything else depends on if there are cooking smells on them, stains or whatever.

I'll wash my work stuff after every wear, with the exception of some annoyingly hard to iron trousers that I'll wear twice before washing.

PJs can be on for at least a week.

NeedToBeStrongStepAway · 17/04/2024 20:35

Yes. Pjs, clothes, uniform. Have done for so many years it's just natural eldest is adult now. Still have 2 infant age dcs and do the same.

Us adults wear twice though. Except underwear of course.

I do between 3 and 4 loads a day. But that's inc bedding days etc.

NewName24 · 17/04/2024 20:37

Good grief no.

a) I had better things to do with my time
b) It costs money we didn't have when the dc were small
c) It doesn't do the clothes any good
d) it can't be good for the environment to be doing unnecessary washing.

Whether it is dcs' clothes or our own, I only wash things that either look, or smell like they need it.

I never heard of people washing PJs after one wear until I read it on here a year or so ago.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 17/04/2024 20:39

Pjs 2 days
school uniform is 1 day as it's usually muddy/grass stained and/or covered in lunch. In the summer I can often get more than one day out of jumpers.
try to get a couple of days out of home trousers/jumpers if not obviously mucky.
sock/pants/t-shirts are one wear.

NeedToBeStrongStepAway · 17/04/2024 20:39

I wfh it takes no time to stick a wash on. Maybe 2 min and 5 min to hang on the line outside or tumble if raining. Basically in the time it takes to make a brew

MumChp · 17/04/2024 20:42

I wash our clothes then needed.
Otherwise is madness tbh.

Jadedbuthappy82 · 17/04/2024 20:43

Shocked at reading most of those replies. God help the planet is all I can say. Utterly bonkers washing everything after one wear, so irresponsible

hjrl · 17/04/2024 20:44

I used to do fresh everything. Then I remembered I'm on a farm, they wear overalls and are bathed daily.

My cleanest items are school uniforms, not a mark compared to home.

So we have work clothes, couple of days, town clothes, depends on how long out, school jumpers, can do all week. Rest I change every couple of days. Pyjamas every three days maybe

ByUmberViewer · 17/04/2024 20:45

I wash everything after one wear. always have.

JustJessi · 17/04/2024 20:47

If they’re clean, wear them again tomorrow.
If dirty, they go in the wash.
PJs are worn for 3 nights.

Saymyname28 · 17/04/2024 20:49

Mostly becuase he's nearly 3 and filthy within 4 minutes of having a bath or putting on clean clothes. It's a skill.

bluecomputerscreen · 17/04/2024 20:49

my dc are teens and very environmentally concious.
knickers, socks fresh every day.
t shirt most days (depends on how sweaty they get)
pj once a week or so.
jeans - until they can walk on their own

CordylineCapybara · 17/04/2024 20:49

Nope

JustJessi · 17/04/2024 20:51

What I can say, as a teacher, is that about half of the children I teach have body odour/unwashed clothing (and this is consistent across all the classes I’ve had in the last 3 years).

JennyWren87 · 17/04/2024 20:52

Mine are 2 and 3 and the answer is yes. I do laundry all the time. Once in a blue moon a vest might survive to be worn twice.

What about the environmental aspect of washing everything after one use?

Cuwins · 17/04/2024 20:54

Day clothes go in the wash basket every evening but then she is only just 2 so they are rarely clean anyway!
Pjs she wears for 2 nights if they are clean

DivorcedAndDelighted · 17/04/2024 20:56

Look at clothes. If they look OK, smell OK, then I hang them up somewhere they can air eg over a chair, on a hanger etc, and they get reworn.
Undies and socks get washed after every use. Everything else gets checked.

Washing things after every use is bizarre - makes so much unnecessary work & energy consumption. One of my student kids shared accommodation with a teenager who was raised like this, washing eg hoodies after every wear. The other students all thought it was weird and very inconvenient when everyone was using shared laundry facilities.

Surroundedbyfools · 17/04/2024 21:05

I wash everything, my toddler is wild. Everything is always dirty, snotty, sweaty and my baby is a sicky wee soul so he’s always charged multiple times a day. I’m literally drowning in washing

SmokeyWigwams · 17/04/2024 21:06

What on earth is the point of washing something unless it's dirty/smelly?!

Sunflowersinthehaze · 17/04/2024 21:08

No, I don’t understand why you would wash something if it isn’t dirty!? It’s bad for the environment and unnecessary. PJs change a few times a week. Underwear yes everyday but T-shirts/dresses/jumpers/trousers etc are washed when visibly dirty and not automatically with each wear.
