Do you wash your children’s clothes after each ‘use’?

Like many, my washing is never ending. Sometimes I’m washing clothes my kids have worn for a few hours, it looks and smells okay. My mum believes everything should be fresh and washed after each ‘use’, new PJs each night etc. My kids have a bath each night and I think it’s okay to wear PJs two nights on the trot (okay, sometimes even 3 🙊)

What do you do? Wash because it’s been worn or fold it up and pop back in their cupboard?

DD's Pjs are worn all week, same as bedding. Clothes are washed if they look grubby, if clearn worn again next day. Knickers/socks washed after 1 use.

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 17/04/2024 19:42

Clean clothing every day. Mainly because he's a dirt magnet seriously never seen anyone like him.

Riverlee · 17/04/2024 19:42

Underwear and dirty clothes washed. Other clothes can be worn for longer periods.

InTheRainOnATrain · 17/04/2024 19:43

I’ll go a whole half term not washing the ballet uniform since that’s only worn for 40 minutes a week. Nothing else ever survives without getting dirty. Even PJs end up with nutella, yoghurt, toothpaste etc on. My eldest is 6 so hoping she at least improves soon so we have a few years of less washing before puberty makes everything stinky 🤣

NearlyHeadlessNick · 17/04/2024 19:45

Realistically mine have clean clothes everyday because they're 6 and 4 and always get filthy. Whether it's mud, paint, or their dinner!
If a jumper can be salvaged, I do. Daughter usually strips her jumper off the second she arrives at pre school so that lasts most of the week. Son will be covered in his school lunch.
Pjs are 3 or so days.

No, I don't. My kids are 5 and 2.

They wear two pairs of PJs a week unless they get dirty.

Every day they wear clean tops, clean socks/tights, clean undies for eldest, and clean vests.

Everything else will theoretically be reworn until it either smells or is visibly dirty. In reality most days this actually is an entire whole outfit change sadly as they're so mucky! But I check all the clothes at the end of the day, anything which isn't dirty is put away to be reworn.

Me too. Usually have to wash everything but won't if I can avoid it (excluding underwear and socks)

I should know better but I wash everything after every wear … full clean clothes every day for everyone in our house !

That’s a lot of unnecessary work and fuel!

Onemorebox · 17/04/2024 20:04

House with 3 primary aged Boys here, I have no choice but to wash everything after every single use Grin

CookieCrumbles23 · 17/04/2024 20:05

I can’t wait to show this to my Mum 🤪

So, my DD is approaching 7 and so she tends to keep jumpers and trousers clean. Son is nearly 4 and even some of his jumpers are decent enough for another wear. It feels like my washing machine is constantly running, I think quite pointlessly sometimes.

Pants socks and vests 1 wear only. Everything else until dirty or 2-3 wears. Jeans sometimes longer. We are all clean and presentable!

LostMySocks · 17/04/2024 20:06

Two primary aged boys:

Clean pants, socks and school shirt/t-shirt each day.
Jeans and denim shorts we aim for 2 or 3 wears subject to mud/spills
PJs officially once a week on clean sheet day but usually more often due to 'drips'. The joy of small boys with occasional dubious aim

bloodyBorat · 17/04/2024 20:07

Apart from underwear/socks which get washed after every use, I only wash things when they are dirty or smelly. That ends up being after almost every use anyway as my 5-year-old has caught the gardening bug recently and is permanently caked in mud. He likes digging for worms and bugs too, so the uniform is also caked in mud pretty much daily 😆

Octavia64 · 17/04/2024 20:08

When DCs were small they trashed clothes daily. Often more than daily!

As they got older no need to wash after one wear except underwear and socks unless it's dirty or smelly.

Jeans and hoodies/jumpers multiple wears.

DappledThings · 17/04/2024 20:08

Of course not. Jumpers, dresses, trousers can all go multiple days if not visibly dirty. Tops, pants and socks are one wear. Pyjamas easily 4-5 wears.

Chairwoman · 17/04/2024 20:09

Underpants + socks every day.
Its only really my middle son who wears vests and they are his comfort blanket so I’ve known one go a few days 🤣
School uniform worn twice unless it’s dirty (usually eldest son).
Weekend clothes usually washed after wear but maybe jeans twice.
Hoodys treated like jackets really not washed often.

They don’t bath every night though, Sunday / Wednesday / Friday is the usual routine. My eldest is 8 and will probably need a daily one soon as it starts heating up as he’s active and gets sweaty hair!!

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/04/2024 20:10

They have a clean tshirt every day for school. And clean pants and socks every day.

fresh pyjamas every week or so

Other than that unless it’s stinky and/or visibly dirty it will get worn again. Not put back in drawer though. Hung on the chair die the next day!

my life has far too much laundry going on as it is. Don’t want any more thanks

Chairwoman · 17/04/2024 20:11

I wouldn’t put used clothes back in the wardrobe though, does anyone else? I just pop them on their beanbag to be worn the next day. If they are clean and it’s eg Sunday with school tomorrow I’d put them in the wash.

Mammma91 · 17/04/2024 20:12

I wash most things after each use as I have a messy toddler and a newborn. However my toddler is fully potty trained so I do re-use pjs for an extra night or 2. Same for jumpers, he usually whips it off after an hour and quite often I can still smell the fresh washing pod on and he will wear again.

DurhamDurham · 17/04/2024 20:12

My mum believes everything should be fresh and washed after each ‘use’, new PJs each night etc

That would mean if you went on holiday for a week with two children would need to take 14 pairs of pjs (28 pairs of parents both wore them too!) Or spend your holiday doing laundry. It's madness to wash them after one wear.

TeamPolin · 17/04/2024 20:16

I do but I have a fairly grubby kid who is incapable of keeping a t-shirt clean for more than mins.

I don't wash my own clothes after each use....

MillshakePickle · 17/04/2024 20:18

Everything is fresh daily. Washed after every use. Clean pjs every night as well. Kid also has 5 of everything school uniform wise and 2 x PE kits.

I only wear clean clothes, and never double or treble wear. Why should my kids?

BabyBoyBeautiful · 17/04/2024 20:20

When mine where little they always had clean (fresh) pjs on after their bath. I did a lot of washing!
I grew up dirty so I was obsessed with ensuring my children were clean/had clean clothing at all times.
They are now in their teens and still shower daily but I let them decide if their clothes are clean enough to wear again. Neither of them smell or look dirty so it's fine.

I have exactly the same attitude with my kids’ and my clothes. No need to wash unless stinky or visibly dirty.
i make an exception for socks and pants.

its a shocking amount of energy usage. And no way will clothes last as long if they’re in the machine after 1 use instead of 3 .

Kalevala · 17/04/2024 20:23

Wash when visibly dirty or smelly. Pants and socks daily.

stayathomer · 17/04/2024 20:25

underwear and socks get changed daily, everything else when visibly dirty or smelly
