Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

@VictorianBigot I'm hoping that it does start to get better because it definitely isn't at the moment. Sending love and I hope that you're feeling better tomorrow.

MouseMinge · 21/05/2024 21:22

After three weeks and five days I am finally home! Francis is, unsurprisingly, quite clingy and I am so pleased to see him as well, my beautiful baby boy. It feels odd to be here because after so long in hospital you do get a tiny big institutionalised, but I'll be used to my home within a couple of days or so and odd as it is, it reaslly is lovely to be here and out of the hospital.

artant · 21/05/2024 21:28

Excellent finally being back home news @MouseMinge - hope a bit of Francis time works its magic and that you have lots of support around you so that you can take things slowly.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 21/05/2024 23:17

That's tremendous news, Mouse.

duc748 · 22/05/2024 00:21

Great to hear you're re-united, Mouse!

Britinme · 22/05/2024 04:17

Hooray! Glad you're home, Mouse.

DeanElderberry · 22/05/2024 07:43

Brilliant. I hope Francis is being very snuggly.

SinnerBoy · 22/05/2024 07:45

I'm gladdened to hear that you're back home, Mouse and that Francis is pleased to see you. Is he following you around?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/05/2024 08:29

MouseMinge · 21/05/2024 21:15

@Vegemiteandhoneyontoast no idea where the bruise has come from but I once woke up to find a large gash at the top of my thigh which has since become a rather interesting scar. Really not sure what happened or how and why I could get such a gash without waking up and thinking "ouch". Long story shorts, sometimes really odd thing happen to bodies and it's best not to wonder too hard.

That's funny, I have a similar scar at the top of my thigh. I'd got up in the night to use the loo and somehow stumbled into the washing machine, which had the soap drawer open. My thigh took the corner off it, which was a rude awakening.

Glad you're home again and tucked up with Francis and hope you feel stronger soon. There's no place like home for that.

DeanElderberry · 22/05/2024 08:32

I've just explained to Oscar about a pussycat in England whose person was ill and away from him for more than three weeks and has now come back and how happy they are to be reunited.

He approves of this and has purred and dribbled a bit. But now wants breakfast.

MouseMinge · 22/05/2024 09:17

Aw, sweet Oscar!

I think if I was moving around a lot he would be following me but as it is he's hanging around a lot and being v clingy and sweet.

VictorianBigot · 22/05/2024 11:45

Really glad you're back in the comfort of your own home and under Francis's loving care now, @MouseMinge.

Kucinghitam · 22/05/2024 13:09

Wonderful to hear that you're home with lovely Francis @MouseMinge!

Yesterday my dad "escaped" from their apartment while my mum popped out to the corner shop. He was missing for about 5 hours, based on the time he set off on their doorbell camera.

Fortunately we have an AirTag on his bunch of keys (and fortunately he had brought them along), so we could see that he hadn't left the apartment complex. Problem is, this consists of garden areas, various seating areas, a multi-storey carpark and three 20-story apartment blocks. Mum had to get the security guards to help search for him, and eventually he was located wandering on one of the floors of our block. He had forgotten which floor they live on and was just getting in and out of the lift at random floors, over and over.

Shortly after he was brought home, I spoke to him on FaceTime and said, "I hope you've recovered from going out today!" to which he replied, "Eh? I didn't go out, I've been home all day!" Hmm

Oh Kuc. It must be so hard. Hooray for the air tag - any chance of making sure he has one on something he can't forget / remove?

FamilyKuc have been debating what else we could AirTag for ages, but given that he's tried to go out in his pyjamas before, we don't have a lot of options. DBro did suggest we could chip him like a pet cat Grin

In other news, really awful to hear about the Singapore Airlines turbulence and that poor passenger who was killed. DDs reminded me that when we fly home to Malaysia, I always tell them to make a toilet trip and then make sure they're seated and strapped in, before we reach the Bay of Bengal. Because over many years of flying that route I've observed that there is always significant turbulence there (and it takes a couple of hours to get across). I also recently read that turbulence has become noticeably worse everywhere, because of global warming putting more energy into the atmosphere - and that also definitely fits with my experience.

Oh dear, what a relief that you found your Dad. I know it's awful at the time, I remember from my great aunt, but things like that can be looked back on later, like some 70s sitcom.

artant · 22/05/2024 14:55

Thank goodness for the AirTag!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/05/2024 16:21

Glad they found him! I suppose Air Tags aren't much help with locating what floor someone might be on in a block.

Exactly! We could tell he was somewhere in the buildings, but some poor bugger had to search each floor 😓

Does he wear a watch? Is there a GPS-capable watch you could buy? How worrying!

@Kucinghitam yes, I've been following that story and also reading up on the impact of CC on turbulence. So awful for the man and his family, especially as they were embarking on a trip of a lifetime. I went down a bit of YouTube rabbit hole last night and found a video of a plane vibrating because of a problem with the engine. The captain was asking everyone on board to pray. The passengers said it was like being in a washing machine for several hours.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/05/2024 17:15

The captain was asking everyone on board to pray

That would not be reassuring! I much prefer the approach of the captain of the plane I was on with engine trouble, who gave very calm updates on the engines, the course re-routing and the Test match scores - in roughly equal proportions.

Kucinghitam · 22/05/2024 17:24

@VictorianBigot I doubt my dad could be relied on to wear a watch. He has a phone (which we also track) but he often forgets that.

Oh, I see that the General Election has been called for 4th July. Is it meant to be ironic?

Oh gawd. I hate election campaigns. I also have a strong dislike of Keir Starmer's voice.

Was he an Aussie? I was once on a very small plane between islands in Fiji, with a thunderstorm in the way. The pilot said "Ah well, we'll go round once again for luck ... and if we have to ditch, the bugger'll float for a bit".
