Yes, however age 18-25 are the group most annoyed about brexit, least likely to vote Conservative and are the ones who would benefit from this. Its just going to further alienate them, which seems silly.

True, but it's all about trying to entice back the Leave voter I think...

Alexandra2001 · 20/04/2024 19:31

It would be extremely problematic to introduce a FOM policy for the u30s, bit tough if you miss out by a day or two.

Plus anything Labour agree to that is remotely pro EU, stirs up the Brexit debate yet again and the Tories would love that.... "Enemies of Democracy.... etc etc"

But Starmar could be pushing the closer trading alignment angle a lot more.... R4 had a recent discussion about it, focusing on food imports, the bottom line is we will have less choice & more expensive.

I argued on here a few years ago that Brexit would lead to exactly this as European producers just find it easier to trade within the bloc or with other countries that they have a better trade agreement with....met with "project fear"

AdamRyan · 20/04/2024 19:38

Honestly Alexandra I'm so bitter about the number of "Project fear" things that turned out to be fact. And we all have to pretend no one knew that in fact We Need Them More Than They Need Us.

prettybird · 20/04/2024 20:15

Ds' comment this morning about Labour's peremptory dismissal of the EU's offer to allow free movement for Under 30s

As per usual, young people are the biggest marginalised group in politics Angry

Unfortunately we were not playing a game.

I thought we had agreed earlier that education was a bad thing as it makes people think more critically and more left leaning?

Perhaps you agreed that with yourself?

Lion400 · 20/04/2024 21:27

fabio12 · 20/04/2024 19:11

@Lion400 that is actually quite a misleading link. What it fails to mention is that most of our rubbish is shipped to places like Africa and China to be disposed of. Often this is toxic and not something we want polluting our soils https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/burning-truth-behind-e-waste-dump-africa-180957597/.

Our gov pays their gov money to hide it, if you like. The West is the biggest consumer and therefore has more waste. We have more cars. We pollute more in those ways. We have benefited from the industrial revolution and now countries like China and Africa are having their turn for progress and have begun upgrading from fossil fuels as their economies grow, faster than we ever did and are doing. We are basically using them as our dumping ground to move the goalposts.

Agreed that the global waste trade is problematic. Though there are now regulations in place to prevent eg. Plastic waste. The U.K. ‘west’ part in any of this is minuscule compared to eg. The USA ‘west’.

I’m not an expert, or even well read on this area. Past a few papers. But logically one can see that our population impact is negligible when compared to others. Waste trade (as bad as it is, though not as bad as it was) included.

AdamRyan · 20/04/2024 22:04

Well in my mind it's a bit like Brexit. The data is unequivocal that global warming is harming us, that microplastics are harming us. The UK can either be socially responsible and act for the greater good of humanity, or it can be "I'm alright Jack" and do whatever it wants.

Most of the population are worried about pollution and global warming and want our government to take it seriously

I wasn’t suggesting we say ‘I’m alright Jack’, at all. That’s a peculiar conclusion to make, from the information I gave.

Your posts certainly sound as though you don't think it is worth us participating in any environmental goals as our efforts would make no difference. Not the best way to give people agency over the climate change crises which will disproportionately affect our country as the sea level rises.

Edited to add a link on the other impacts of climate change that are largely being ignored by this government https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2023/12/11/11-things-to-know-about-the-health-effects-of-climate-change-report/

I think you’ll find it was the dastardly EU playing games.

Edited

Its called leadership, a few countries start to take some action and others, not wanting to miss out, if you like, then follow.

All countries can take your stance, separate EU countries can all do nothing or they can all act, 27 countries and 400m people can make a difference, the EU is a huge and wealthy trading bloc, how they act really matters and so does the UKs actions, we despite Brexit, are still a european country... there is also the economic aspect..
Green tech isn't going away eg an Oxford company developed a new type of Solar panel (far better efficiency) our country didn't fund it .. so production, jobs and taxes are now in Germany.

Both the EU and the USA are involved in huge tax payer funded green investment products, we need to compete and a great shame Labour gave into Tory smears on their proposals.

Mail on Sunday going for Rayner again. It seems a regular event with them.

Zonder · 21/04/2024 07:26

You'd think there were enough things to report on that actually are worth reporting.

But the media treat all parties fairly, there is NO bias....... repeat after me...

And apparently Senior Conservatives are compiling a dossier of BBC bias because they aren't covering Rayner's story as much as Menzies or Wragg.

IClaudine · 21/04/2024 08:43

The Tories obviously want to keep the Rayner story going so it is still current on local elections day. They are so dumb and desperate. Do they seriously imagine it will change anyone's voting intentions?

Which shows why they're in such a mess. They are incapable of differentiating between someone possibly making an admin mistake when carrying out a complex process for the first time and someone engaging in drug fueled, sexually incontinent behaviour and possibly breaching national security.

BIossomtoes · 21/04/2024 08:47

They really are idiots. It’s so obviously a witch hunt now. The wasted money, time and energy it’s consuming is unreal. For what? £1500? We didn’t have this furore over Zahawi’s £3.7 million.

bombastix · 21/04/2024 09:05

I hope she beats them. What a life she has had. They cannot bear the idea that someone of her background can succeed and not ape all the markers of Tory success. They hate her.

She would be radical in government because she would actively want to change things for those at the poorest end of society. She knows how it feels.

There are enough rich, well educated and insulated people in politics in both Labour and the Conservatives.

Angela Rayner is the real person who stands to inject some radicalism into the Labour Government. They should defend her and support her.

The victory is when she beats them. That will be my election night champagne moment.

BIossomtoes · 21/04/2024 09:30

Mine too. We’ll clink virtual glasses. 🥂

John Elledge has a theory that the overly friendly right wing media that print whatever the Tories want has actually caused them a problem. They’ve assumed that if the papers are printing it it’s what the public care about but it’s massively divorced them from what the public do care about in a way that wouldn’t have happened if the media were holding them to account.

They just have no clue.

Interesting idea, perhaps is the case.

It's also the time of year when the tabloids won't have too many women at awards ceremonies or on summer holidays to photograph as 'click bait' for men to gawp at.
