I think his argument is that there are legal routes for Afghanis who supported the UK to come here so anyone using an illegal route would be a wrong'un.

Bit tone deaf to anyone who even vaguely followed the withdrawal from Afghanistan isn't it.

Can you only apply for this route when in Afghanistan?

Charles I suspended Parliament. So did Boris Johnson.

My lifelong opposition to the death penalty is the sole reason why the traitor Boris Johnson should not have the same fate as Charles I.

Same here, wouldn’t you just love a pit that they could be thrown into they are an unspeakable cabal of hatred & division devoid of any humanity.

cakeorwine · 19/04/2024 19:10

I would love for a Cabinet Minister to be grilled in detail about how Afghanis can apply for a visa to come here under that scheme.

And I mean, in detail

Update from the Times regarding Menzies - Katie Fieldhouse received the phone call in the middle of the night.

"Fieldhouse claimed that the Conservatives had known the allegations were potentially criminal since the investigation was transferred to CCHQ at least seven weeks ago."

"She said: “He told me on the phone, ‘the solicitor said it is fraud but you are not duty-bound to report it because it’s not Conservative Party money’.”

I dont really understand the rationale for not reporting it.

Notonthestairs · 19/04/2024 19:18

sorry I cant seem to create a share token from my account with the Times, very annoying

Charles I didn't just "suspend" parliament.

He rocked up with armed force and insisted to be told who was against him in debates (in reality nearly all were).

The speaker told him to get fucked, and little Charley got the hump and went off to get some big boys to beat up parliament.

The rest - as they say - is history.

I leave it for others to contemplate the significance - if any - that we are where we are with a Charles III on the throne.

Nice use of a French word there ...

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/04/2024 19:36

The speaker may be a problem. Don’t see Hoyle telling anyone to get fucked. Bercow would have done.

The Labour Party can produce fantastic memes on social media. However this isn't one of them. Sexist and inappropriate.

Wouldn't it be great if it gets to the King and the King tells them to get to fuck.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/04/2024 18:19

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the amendment on exempting Afghans who helped British troops “is unnecessary” as the UK already has “safe and legal routes” for them to come to Britain.
He said the change would “create an unnecessary and dangerous incentive for these people to travel here illegally, which is precisely what this Bill is trying to avoid”.

WTAF! So he thinks people with a safe and legal route to get here are deliberately and seemingly unnecessarily taking an expensive and dangerous one on a small boat and the minute chance they may be one of the people sent to Rwanda is the thing that’s going to be a disincentive. Pull the other one.

Or perhaps his argument is that the safe and legal route is so badly run that it’s not enough of an incentive to asylum seekers, whose lives are in danger because they helped us, to not risk death on a small boat.

In a nutshell shell.

Shapps tried to argue his way out of a paper bag on this one the other day on radio.

The story is updated again

Exclusive: Tories received legal advice that Mark Menzies's alleged misuse of campaign funds amounted to fraud but decided they weren't obliged to tell the police because it was donors' rather than party money, whistleblower claims.

We can't allow fraudsters to exploit the natural compassion and generosity of the British people."

Can’t believe Rishi managed to say this with a straight face during his speech on welfare this morning. Does his speechwriter hate him too?

This all a bit embarrassing on a day when they are announcing cracking down on fraud. Not this sort of fraud obviously.

Yup. That needs to go straight in the bin and whoever produced it & thought it was worth sending out needs to be put straight now.

Piggywaspushed · 19/04/2024 21:52

Interesting nonetheless how quickly a thread appeared about it considering the misogynistic shite appearing almost daily from the party in power.

As soon as I saw it, I knew it'd be zapped.

Notonthestairs · 19/04/2024 21:58

The longer form Times article, I can't link to, is quite revealing. I found it quite sad in the sense that Fieldhouse (the recipient of the late night phone call) had been let down on every level.

When she spoke to other party members it wasn't the first time Menzies had needed bailing out of a flat. They were certainly were not surprised.

Fieldhouse spoke to Simon Hart in early January and then the chief of staff at CCHQ. She rejected press calls (because she thought CCHQ were dealing with things) and then things seem to unravel and it reads like the party closed ranks and insinuated that Menzies version of events was quite different. At that point she was so upset that she responded to journalists.

The article stresses that she has been a member of the Conservative for a long time and that her family took their loyalty to the party very seriously.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/04/2024 22:02

So essentially, if the party had done something this wouldn’t be the crisis it is now. That sounds like the sort of competent crisis management we’ve come to expect.
