Plus troll hunting is against the rules of MN. If people don't think it's real, they should report it.

Yes, “Troll hunting “ is a serious no no on MN and can get people suspended.

Eg saying outright that you think a thread is a fib.
One is meant to just “ Report” the thread.

It’s unusual that land and a garage aren’t mentioned in an estate agent’s blurb as both add substantial value to a property-
( Depending where in the country it is, of course)
A Garage in Chelsea would easily be north of £250,000

Free country: You dont have to come onto the thread to snark, why don't you start your own thread and receive your very own personal snarks? Might make you a bit happier perhaps?

Sorry, but this movie would be rubbish. I mean, great first act setting the scene of couple with a sad past looking for new house. We obviously need to delve into the past to get the emotions going and how important new house purchase is. Second act will be dealing with garage thief and really get the audience riled up. This will be resolved satisfactorily and just before the ad break we are gearing up for allotment thief. Sadly, after the ad break Babs will be going to a solicitor who sets her straight, pats crazy parsnip lady gently on the arm saying "there there" and the rest will be over very quickly.
Otoh, I would love to watch a movie full of mn references: pom bears in a bowl; beaker of water next to the bed being eyed suspiciously; sneaky neighbours returning from a holiday in Mexico etc

Yorkshire, so not so much value as Chelsea and the garage would have been shown in the pics so not really any need to mention it....it would be expected....also the seller instructs the EA and she may have not wanted to get into it with the CF garage user and Babs so just kept quiet.

I can't believe you're on thread 3! 🤣

I can. My original bet was 4 threads. It could be more.

AgnesX · 13/04/2024 14:29

Is there a Tom or a Margo (apologies, I've not read the entire 2 threads) I've just got mental images of the Good Life.

KateDelRick · 13/04/2024 14:30

No, but in my head the OP and her husband are definitely Eileen and Norris from Coronation Street.

I love a land law dispute!

and adverse possession is just that - adverse, clue’s in the name!! If you’ve given someone permission it’s not really adverse 🤷🏼‍♀️ unsure why so many people keep mentioning it !

Yes it’s just possession !

ForestForever · 13/04/2024 14:31

I honestly don’t understand how people can defend this woman’s staggering cheeky fuckery and project on to you and your husband that you’re the bad guys. Barbara would have known that the house would have been sold months ago. Happy to be corrected here but surely at least the majority of her now “established” plants that you’ll be so “mean and unkind” to dig up wouldn’t have been established or as established when previous owner put her house on the market and sold it. A house doesn’t get sold over night. She’s not been kind by forward planning intentionally taking the absolute piss out of whoever would have bought your house. What if it were an elderly person who moved in who were more advanced in their years than her, would she garner the same sympathies from PP then? I doubt it. She is lucky you haven’t removed all of her stuff, bagged/boxed it up and left it on her doorstep. A lot of people would have binned it and based on the outcome of moderately serious crimes this day and age this “criminal damage” wouldn’t be worth the paperwork to prosecute. I’d dare say that you could raise an equal “criminal” damage dispute by complaining about her disturbing your ground by planting in it. Criminal damage and the “be kind don’t stress people out” mentality works both ways. Barbara will finally after all these years learn the consequence of her actions and cause and effect. I also doubt that someone who’s response is “I’ll fight you for it” other than “I’m very sorry to be a massive CF if you could give me the good grace to find time to find elsewhere to plant my stuff” hasn’t spent their whole life learning that they can take the piss and be combative when challenged. Rude beyond belief.

Ogonek · 13/04/2024 14:33

someone mentioned needing an Old Korean Lady in the dramatisation.

I agree, she could be making kimchi on one of the other allotments, whilst desperately straining to overhear what was going on

Elderly Korean Lady was my suggestion. Luckily there should be plenty of cabbage around for her to get a head start on the kimchi, which as any fule kno must be fermented for a period of time. She can set up a field kitchen in Barbara's shed.

First section - sad background
Second section - OP's family dealing with CF neighbours on both sides and then they encounter Babs
Third section - OP fights back with the help of a savvy solicitor and OH's mates and it turns out that everyone's been waiting for Babs to get her come-uppance for years. OP is elected Mayor and/or head of Neighbourhood Watch and/or Bin Supervisor
Epilogue - Stella the Seller realises she's been a soft touch for years and resolves to fight back against CFery.

BunniesRUs · 13/04/2024 14:36

This thread is going to be full with placemarking before OP even updates us! I do genuinely feel bad for OP.... and Barbara, I guess.

MN is always half full of people saying you need to stand up for yourself and the other half telling people to roll over.

It’s ridiculous that you wanted an allotment and now you have one you can’t use. If Barbara had any critical thinking skills she must have known this was an option. If this was her dear friend they she should have know she was selling/leaving.

Our family home had a stretch of grass down the side, it wasn’t fenced off as part of the garden because of height difference, then there was shrubbery separating it from the path. We played down there a lot as kids pretending it was a den.
When I was a teenager the house next door was sold, and they put a caravan on it. My dad told them to move it, they said they only bought the house as they thought it was theirs. As my dad said why would you even think that, gave him an hour to shift it and fix the fence they had moved.
Just because you want something and might find it useful, doesn’t mean it’s yours.

Just tying a small flag to a bamboo cane here.🚩

BlackCountryWench2 · 13/04/2024 15:05

Barbara has been spotted in the wild! Turns out that she’s actually called Brenda.

As to who should play her in the movie, I think Emma Watson would have the necessary range and depth.

CF allotment thief part 3: The ‘plot’ thickens and auditions begin for the west end musical
Another2Cats · 13/04/2024 15:06

@CarolinaInTheMorning I think the main difference is that here in the UK most people when they buy/sell are in a "chain" where everybody completes the sale on the same day.

As I understand things, it is more common in the US to either rent somewhere or get a bridging loan so that you are out of the house several days or weeks before your buyer completes the sale. Likewise the person you are buying from has already moved out of their home before you complete your purchase of it.

In the UK that's not really so common. It's much more common for everybody to complete on the same day and the money flows from one person (or rather, their lawyers) to the next in the chain and everybody gets the keys to their new property on the same day.

TheHappyBear · 13/04/2024 15:06

I haven't been following this thread all the way through because it would take too much time, so forgive me but has it been established that the land does indeed belong to the OP? As opposed to belonging to the council and rented by the previous house owner who let her friend have it.

Yes, it is owned by OP and her DH. It's on the deeds.
