her "dear friend" didn't tell her? she lived opposite the house and didn't know? I don't know about you but round here if a close house goes on sale, we all know!

Yeah the house, not the land.
I'm not defending her, but the OP wasn't aware of everything and she was the purchaser!!
What if B thought the land wasn't for sale and she was ok?

unlikely, she knew that the OP hadn't sold or given it to her. If it had been sold separately then it would just have been a different new owner telling her to leave. I really do not believe that Babs would have honestly thought that the seller had kept it.

The OP engaged a solicitor who made her aware of everything.

B could have clarified the situation with the seller.

Ohnobackagain · 13/04/2024 20:39

@Fairyliz I see Op has confirmed that she was aware before completion and replied to several posters saying they queried it during the conveyancing process.

KateDelRick · 13/04/2024 20:39

I know, I'm just saying that obviously mistakes were made, not necessarily maliciously.

pepperminticecream · 13/04/2024 20:44

@YaMuvva I am sorry if I missed this and someone already asked but do you know if B has her own back garden? You said in one of your comments that you have a large back garden, and so if B lives near you, I am assuming she lives in a similar home and has her own back garden or even front garden?

The point I am making is that if B has her own garden space, she can transplant her crops into raised beds, containers, etc. and continue with the growing season.

I just am a little confused at why so many posters are saying how this is unfair to B, when you are the new owners, and you deserve total access to the land you have purchased and it is up to B to find a way to continue her love of gardening on her own land.

But, if B does indeed have her own garden then maybe a good will gesture, could be to gift her with a growing container of some sort?

Crazybabylady14 · 13/04/2024 20:45

@YaMuvva for what's it's worth (and only my two penny worth)

You gave a snap shot of everything.

You bought a house with some non attached assets that you were aware of during the purchase of your property. Vacant would be assumed. You have have had some (like most of us) things happen that we don't always get round to.

Barbs, if such a good friend would have known about the house sale from silly seller sally, and therefore land. If there had been any prior agreement that was legally enforceable it would have come up.

If I were you, and I'm a soft touch, give her a short (legal letter) notice period. Maybe a couple of weeks. That's enough to dig up anything important and remove the shed.

And I am not a lawyer, but it's a shame on way you've had contact with her. Your land. You could've just starting digging it over

JohnSt1 · 13/04/2024 20:47

When she said she'd fight you for it, she invited you to respond likewise.

I did post on one of the other threads, I had to stand on a ladder in DD’s room to properly get a good look behind Barbara’s house (yes I’m aware it’s a new low but what can I say I’m a nosey bitch and needed to hang new curtains anyway) and yes Barbara has a huge garden. All of them on the street appear to be pretty big so it didn’t surprise me!

yes the OP has confirmed that B has her own large garden....and I am not sure why the OP should be giving a goodwill gesture?

Babs thought she was home and dry when nothing happened after the sale. She isn't. Tough titties.

Don't you mean 'Tough taters'?

Babs, her herbs, fruit and veg. now need to do one.

BlancheSaysYes · 13/04/2024 21:06

If Babs has a big garden, why on earth does she need an allotment as well? It makes no sense. Surely she would prefer to grow her fruit and veg on her own land rather than someone else's. I don't understand why she's so miffed at having to up sticks either, she must have realised when the house sold, her allotment would go too. She can simply replant everything from the allotment into her own garden, no need for all this drama.

Could I suggest this as the big dance number?

She doesn't have too, of course.

I don't understand why B is using someone else's land in the first place when she has a large back garden. And I wouldn't feel bad for telling her to pack up her things and go since she has the space to replant and still make use of her food crops for this season.

Though, I also, wouldn't feel that bad (maybe a little more understanding of B) even if she didn't have the back garden. It is not OP responsibility to care about plants that someone has planted on her property.

Dibbydoos · 13/04/2024 21:19

@YaMuvva I had a dream (because of your saga) that I bought a house and the day before we completed the neighbours built a commercial kitchen in the house so they could run a restaurant from it as agreed with the previous owner.

We moved in on restaurant opening day. When I challenged them , I didn't just have a Barb but a whole bunch of aged AHs! I woke up with a right start 🤣🤣🤣

iAmBarbara · 13/04/2024 21:25

Picturing this as a tap ensemble number, Barbara front and centre, and tap dancers dressed as various vegetables

also a moody dramatic number called ‘adverse possession’

No, I want to see it done by the Carry On team, sadly they're no longer with us, otherwise -
OP - Hattie Jacques
Mr OP - Kenneth Williams
Barbara - Barbara Windsor of course!
Sid James - the garage squatter

An interesting idea. Although I think that my choices would be different. Some of them only played minor roles

OP - Angela Douglas (she's still alive, the same age as my mum)
DH - Roy Castle (Carry On Up the Khyber)
Babs - Joan Sims (I think Barbara Windsor is just too nice to play Babs)
Babs DH - Sid James
Garage squatter - either Bernard Bresslaw or Peter Butterworth
Sally the Seller - Joan Hickson (aka Miss Marple in the 1980s)
Solicitor - Kenneth Williams

ps Angela Douglas was only in four Carry On films - Carry On Cowboy, Carry On Screaming, Carry On Follow That Camel and Carry On Up the Khyber. Incidentally, her first husband was the actor Kenneth More (he's probably most well known for playing Douglas Bader in the film Reach for the Sky)

Joan Hickson was in Carry On Nurse, Carry On Constable, Carry On Regardless, Carry On Loving and Carry on Girls. Although she later became much better known for playing Miss Marple in the 1980s. The BBC even did a piece on the news when she passed away. Youtube video:

Sadly, after the ad break Babs will be going to a solicitor who sets her straight

Obvioudly that’s not the whole story.

Obviously she wouldn’t have spent all that time on the allotment, knowing that her friend had sold her house if there weren’t something going on in the shed or underneath the potatoes.

I’m wondering if we need to think beyond drugs/murder/theft and think more along the lines of alien invasion?

What - is Babs a pod person?

Oh good god my DS had to squawk sing that for his year 1 harvest festival and we spent weeks learning it. I swear that song will haunt me to my dying day! But howling at the thought of a stage tap version featuring human leeks and carrots 🤣

I'm placemarking with interest!

What a good read🤪

YaMuvva · 13/04/2024 21:37

How about a jukebox musical Using the songs of the Beach Boys, some slightly tweaked:

  • Barbara Ann (of course)
  • Good Vegetation (instead of good vibration)
  • Surfing Broccol-aaaay
  • Wouldn’t it be nice (if I could steal an allotment, then I wouldn’t have to wait for my oooooown)
  • Yorkshire Girls
  • I Get Around (ownership laws)
