What is the MOST irritating thing on Mumsnet?

5YearsLeft · 13/04/2024 04:43

I saw someone mention that something was “high on the list of most irritating Mumsnet things,” but I couldn’t find a post discussing that list. And now we have polls, I thought it might be interesting, especially “other” stuff.

OP posts:
AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/04/2024 08:58

People who moan about grammar and spelling, especially if they actually correct posters on threads. And especially if they disingenuously claim not to understand posts which are perfectly clear in their communication, just so they can feel superior. If you can't understand a post, it's almost certainly your comprehension skills that are at fault.

JacobsCrackle · 13/04/2024 08:58

People who start by saying “I’ll probably get flamed for this…” before saying something utterly banal or identical to every other post on the thread.

People who get 10 helpful answer then pop up to say “Anyone else?” without acknowledging anyone.

CantStandMeow · 13/04/2024 08:59

The lack of a block poster button. I don't care if I will miss out on the goady threads they start. Or that they're on here 24/7 with their commentary on every single thread so it will make the threads like Swiss cheese. Or any of the other reasons that were given as to why it isn't feasible. I don't want to read their crap! I barely notice usernames, only when I think what a twatty comment and go back to see and it's always the same people.

People who quote the whole first post. We know what you’re replying to, we’ve all just read it.

I was going to say this.
OP writes a novel as an opener then several people quote that entire long long post just to say a few words when all they need to do is start their reply with "OP" and everyone knows who they're replying to so we don't have to keep scrolling past that massive post just to see they've said "I agree" 🙄

I’d agree re Boomers (I am one) - except for those who so tediously bang on about young people only being unable to afford to buy a home because of their addiction to smartphones and avocados.

So stupid and clueless (or wilfully ignorant) about how much prices, relative to incomes, have changed.

Yes I agree it’s equally irritating when older people like ourselves ( I’m Gen X) make comments suggesting affordability is comparable today to back when we were first time buyers.

But that doesn’t excuse younger people throwing the word “boomer” around as a insult to older people, many of whom have nothing but sympathy for those struggling to buy their first property. There is a lot of jealousy & resentment towards people who gained from being born at the right time but haven’t actually done anything wrong.

Nothing people can do about when and where they were born. It's so silly to attribute blame.

Totally agree.

The one post we probably all have read is the OP. DON'T QUOTE IT AGAIN!!!

RenoDakota · 13/04/2024 09:07

The "what did they say when you asked them?" ones.

tracktrail · 13/04/2024 09:08

So many, and most, have already been covered, so thanks to the posters, I've copy and pasted posts from.

Poor comprehension and spellings that change the meaning of the post.
When the Op starts a thread, then leaves other participants to fight and
ghosting us all.

The man hating. The constant references to 'The Script', honestly, do they think Bloke goes online and looks up the script in being an asshole?

The obsession with trying to shoehorn ASD, ADHD, SEN, etc. into any discussion as if it’s the answer for everything.
Especially irritating when it’s to criticise the OP for their viewpoint because they were irritated by someone. It usually takes only a few posts until someone dishes out the beloved “what if this person is autistic???”.

The hate for mother in laws and step parents.
The mil threads where it is apparent to me that the self-centred, jealous, controlling dil is the issue...but she is exalted here.
When someone says that they don't want their parents in law around after the birth of their baby but say it's fine for their mum to be around. Does the poor dad not get any say? The response usually seems to be 'your body.. your choice'. I always hope that those who exclude the paternal grandparents have a boy, so they get a bit of karma when they become a grandparent.

Advising posters to contact the police about the most minor irritations. It's as though the police are a grown-up equivalent of going to the head teacher in primary school.

It has lost its humour, and many of the witty comebacks have disappeared, or when they do, people take offence.

When I first joined, close to the beginning, there were so many of us in our mid-30s/early 40s with small children. I think some of us are still here, but the site seems so young now.
The intelligence of the replies has been replaced with vitriol.

There are times when I feel it has got more like NetMums, which seemed more prissy and prescriptive.

Wendysfriend · 13/04/2024 09:08

For me it's the made up stories. I actually had to log off one day because there were so many, they were very obviously bullshit and what made it worse was people replying with advice. I think the ones that irritate me the most are the ones that think they're funny, the live ones and the illness ones .

Bjorkdidit · 13/04/2024 09:10

AutumnBride · 13/04/2024 08:51

Posters who think everyone lives in London or the Home Counties.

And that no-where outside London has any culture, diversity, amenities, employment opportunities etc.

I can usually spot the school bullshit/teacher bashing nonsense easily.
I think ones telling an improbable story going on for several threads are just trying out creative writing.

I know. It's like we all had a meeting in 1986 and plotted how to shaft the next generation.

Shhhh! Don't tell them…

For me, it's a toss up between the constant ageism and the piss poor comprehension skills.

Rainraindontgoaway · 13/04/2024 09:12

The thread where a chicken will feed a family of 4 for a week!

whywonttheyeattheirfood · 13/04/2024 09:12

People who are miserable and contrary just for the sake of it.

People who piss all over someone's thread just to spoil things.

Some young person started a thread about how she wished she'd been an adult in the 90s because All Was Well With The World.
She was swiftly disabused.

bluetopazlove · 13/04/2024 09:13

I haven't read the entire thread but jeez the obsession with class on this site is just so dull . The mix of women & men on here and that's what some come up with to talk about .Hmm

The ‘D’ prefix. I think it’s dated, twee and irritating. It was undoubtedly useful back in the day before smartphones to use the quicker ‘DH’, but now? It’s just daft. And when posters use it for everything - ‘Dcat’, Ddog’, ‘Dnephew’…WHY? 😤

Completely agree! Twee as fuck.
DD is direct debit to my brain.
It's easier just to type 'daughter' rather than capitalise as it's a similar number of clicks on a smartphone.

Is that you Lea? 😂

Rainraindontgoaway · 13/04/2024 09:14

When people think they can be utterly unreasonable and batshit because they are pregnant or have kids. Let’s face it a lot of us on here have kids and have been pregnant but did not expect the world to stop spinning, thinking of a recent one where someone thought sun beds next to a pool should only be for those with kids.

RenoDakota · 13/04/2024 09:07

The "what did they say when you asked them?" ones.

Tbh, I do think that….well, did you ask them, how would I know?🤷‍♀️

The double standards on here:

’I caught my DP looking through my phone! AIBU to be really annoyed?’
’That would be a dealbreaker for me OP! A complete invasion of your privacy! It would be the end of the relationship for me!’

’my spidey senses are tingling, I think my DP is cheating’
’Do you have access to his phone OP?’ 🤔

Agree totally. Someone even posted about abuse from her husband and referred to him as DH 😤

When people reply and quote the original post… it’s so annoying! Particularly if the original post is really long! If you’re adding a comment to the thread it’s obvious you’re replying to the OP’s post no need to quote!

Use of DC. DH the DEAR really annoys me! Not many use Dear in this way in daily life... it's cringe, sick buckets. They're following like sheep.

👏Say it louder for the people at the back!
