Good will hunting.
Bloody amazing film. Robin Williams is awesome. So good and way better than he is doing comedy roles!

I think he's brilliant both ways.

That film is one of the best films ever made.

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/04/2024 20:31

He was an all rounder funny and non comedic roles too

Pigeonqueen · 11/04/2024 20:31

I love all of his films. Dead Poets and Fisher King are amazing too.

Aaron95 · 11/04/2024 20:33

He was one of the finest comedians who ever lived. Nevermind his films watch Robin Williams and Evening At the Met (it's on YouTube) and his genius is on full display.

Did anyone see Photo shoot film?
he played a mote serious role and was bloody good in it too..

WhyArePiratesCalledPiratessss · 11/04/2024 20:36

I can't bring myself to watch Patch Adams and, for example, Mrs Doubtfire is OK but... Good will hunting.. Brilliant!

I feel like this about Steve Carell after watching him in a couple of fairly heavy hitting dramas.

dudsville · 11/04/2024 20:39

I partly agree, also don't want to watch Patch Adams, fisher king and good will hunting, dead poets are all amazing. I also agree that Steve Carrel is similar. I'll look for that evening at the meet though as i love a good stand up set.

His finest hour is being the voice of Gru in the Minions films. (I’m serious — it’s really good characterisation!)

Iconicbrand · 11/04/2024 20:41

Why are you picking at the man. He’s dead. What a tasteless thread.

Helpsamaritan · 11/04/2024 20:41

He's a much better actor than the parts he's played give him credit for. I agree about Gru.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/04/2024 20:42

All good comedians can play straight. Very few straight actors can play funny.

Did you misread? The OP is admiring him in ‘straight’ roles!

Mother87 · 11/04/2024 20:49

Oh but Good Morning Vietnam...

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 11/04/2024 20:49

He’s really creepy in ‘One Hour Photo’.

Tiny2018 · 11/04/2024 20:50

Excellent performance with Robert Deniro in Awakenings.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 11/04/2024 20:51

What I mean to say is yes, he’s a good in straight roles too.

Helpsamaritan · 11/04/2024 20:52

I liked him in The Birdcage

CaveMum · 11/04/2024 20:53

Steve Carell is brilliant in The Big Short.

Robin Williams was just a genius, pure and simple.

This is true!

I think he could be quite schmaltzy at times. Even in One Hour Photo. Probably the fault of Hollywood wanting him to be.

I think he was best in Awakenings for straight films as he I believed him as the character rather than "ooh that's Robin Williams!"

Waitingfordoggo · 11/04/2024 21:00

He was an excellent actor.

I feel like this about Ricky Gervais too. I’m not sure that Gervais has done any straight roles, but he has had some serious scenes in his comedy shows and I am always impressed by how natural he is. One of the scenes with the Dad in Afterlife made me cry. And the scene in Extras where Andy is in the Big Brother house and goes into a monologue about fame and how ridiculous it all is- I found that genuinely incredibly moving.

eggplant16 · 11/04/2024 21:01

terribly sad the way things went.

OldTinHat · 11/04/2024 21:09

I love, love the raw honesty of his alcoholism on a YT clip. I don't know how to link it, but it is an easy find if you search.
