Good will hunting.
Bloody amazing film. Robin Williams is awesome. So good and way better than he is doing comedy roles!

Why are you picking at the man. He’s dead. What a tasteless thread.

Yeah. Really not the intent.
Pls feel free to go be offended elsewhere.

Tonight is dead poets society.
To my shame, I don't recall ever watching it all the way thru! Just snippets here and there.

I feel like this about Steve Carell after watching him in a couple of fairly heavy hitting dramas.

I shall queue up some Steve Carrell for when I run out of RW!
Thanks for the recommendation. I've only seen him in funny stuff. Maybe I'll love him too!

Loved him in What Dreams May Come. It's better than it sounds. His love for this wife came over so strongly.

So it's preferable/fine to 'pick on' people who are alive? Or are you not allowed to criticise the work of anyone alive or dead?

I found Dead Poets Society really boring when I watched it years and years ago and Mork was the most hideous character ever. I have quite a soft spot for Mrs Doubtfire though which is one of those films I can just watch any time it comes on.

@WhyArePiratesCalledPiratessss definitely watch The Big Short, I think it’s on Netflix at the moment. It’s about the 2008 financial crash and is based on the true story of various investors in the US who saw it coming and made millions out of the crisis. It’s not as dry as it sounds, it’s serious, funny and insanely frustrating to see how these firms got away scot free while people lost their homes and livelihoods.

Also, Beautiful Boy and Last Flag Flying

He was so, so expressive. Whatever kind of role. He just communicated through every pore! ‘Emote, darlings, emote!’

Thank you for the recommendations. I will add them to my lists!

I agree. He was absolutely wonderful in that. The film is devastating but so, so beautiful.

Don't forget Insomnia!

I was just going to mention this! Very interesting film. I'd love to see it again.

It's on prime if you have it.

He’s excellent in GWH and that bit where he’s telling Will about how his wife used to fart in bed and wake the dog is completely ad libbed. You can see that Matt Damon is laughing for real.

merryhouse · 14/04/2024 21:06

Patch Adams was quite startling.

The choice was made while I was upstairs nursing a baby, so I came down about ten minutes in knowing nothing about it.

Half-way through there was a sudden jerk and it was a completely different film.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 14/04/2024 21:13

I love the Birdcage and Good Morning Vietnam.

He was able to provide subtle social commentary at the same time as not so subtle humour. GMV presents a very human side of the conflict that's heartbreaking.

readingmakesmehappy · 14/04/2024 21:17

His 2002 stand up tour is one the funniest things any human has ever produced.

Borborygmus · 14/04/2024 21:20

He could be pretty impressive as a straight actor. I never found him remotely funny as a comedian though, just irritating.

ladygindiva · 14/04/2024 21:26

I wasn't a fan of his comedy films but he was an amazing standup and a gifted actor, loved him in serious roles eg dead poets society.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 14/04/2024 21:31

I think Jim Carey is similar, amazing actor in non comedy roles.

rewilded · 14/04/2024 21:38

Robin Williams was a one off. I miss his films. I feel sad actually to think he has gone. An incredible talent gone too soon.

Isitjustmethenhmm · 14/04/2024 21:42

I loved him in most films so much and still not exactly sure what happened to him?

His eyes just seemed to have so much behind them, it’s quite a rare thing when you find someone with that…hard to explain

GameOfJones · 14/04/2024 21:50

He had Lewy Body Dementia. It causes an imbalance in the brain that can affect mood and he took his own life. It was so tragic, it took me years before I could watch anything with him in it.

outside1inside · 14/04/2024 21:55

I still find it difficult to watch his films etc. I'm on to watching the less well known stuff and everything I watch is one thing closer to never watching something new again.
