How many UK cities have you visited?

Inspired by a post on another thread, I decided to work this out. I've only been to 40 of the 76 - 32 in England, 6 in Scotland and only one each for Wales and Northern Ireland. (I've not included the Crown dependencies etc on the list though I have been to Douglas so it's 41 if I count that.) Some of my "visits" are a bit tenuous, such as my car broke down in Doncaster once so I perhaps haven't seen the place to its best advantage, but I haven't included places I have been through but not stopped at, such as going through Milton Keynes on the train, or being diverted through St Asaph due to roadworks on the way to a North Wales holiday!
I thought I'd visited most parts of the UK but looks like I actually have some pretty big gaps. How many have you been to? I have to confess that I didn't know that some of the places on this list even were cities.

39, although some are fairly tenuous.

  1. Thinking about it being from the south and having lived there for 39 years I think I should have got round to visiting Bristol or Norwich. But I don't think I ever have.

All 6 in Northern Ireland (I'm from there)
All 8 in Scotland (went to Edinburgh University and stayed in Scotland for 5 years afterwards)
1 in Wales (just Cardiff)

35 in total. 36 counting Gibraltar.

  1. Never been to northern island or any of the abroad ones plus have been to half the Scottish ones or couple of Welsh ones. Been to majority of British ones
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/04/2024 23:13

I’ve been to 33, mainly in England and Wales.

41 in England
2 in Scotland
1 in Wales
0 in Northern Ireland

There's lots of interesting places to visit in the UK. IKEA was my main reason to go to Milton Keynes though.

I lived in London for a few years when I had my first child and was amazed at the number of people I met who "travelled" and had lots of holidays in different countries but had hardly left London in the UK.

Same although I don't live in London. I always find it weird when dcs mates have been to places like sharm al sheikh but haven't been to their own capital city or even to Edinburgh which is 90 mins on a train from where we live.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 11/04/2024 08:00

25 England
2 Scotland
0 Northern Ireland
4 Wales

I am not counting e.g. changing trains there or stopping off at a service station.

MargaretThursday · 11/04/2024 08:09

20 England
1 Scotland
2 Wales
never been to NI

EventuallyDecluttered · 11/04/2024 08:46

I've counted two where I have only gone there to go to someone's house for a party and never really seen the city itself apart from driving there and back but not if it is just changing a train or similar.

AlpacaMaJammas · 11/04/2024 09:00

27 in total.
0 in Wales
1 in NI
All of the Scottish cities (I live in one)
And Douglas in the IoW
0 abroad ones

Ariela · 11/04/2024 09:01

All bar the Northern Ireland ones, although St Asaph & St David I've visited before they were cities. So 67. Or 69.

Have not yet been to IoM either, so add Douglas. Nor been to Northern Ireland - that's planned soon, and the 2 Welsh ones I've been planning to revisit anyway.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 11/04/2024 09:05

England - 24
NI - none
Scotland - 6
Wales - 3
Total: 33

JaninaDuszejko · 11/04/2024 09:54

Loving the fact that you can tell the Scots and people who have lived in Scotland because we all say 'all the Scottish ones'.

focacciamuffin · 11/04/2024 09:59

I’m pretty confident that I have been to, or through, every single one.

Finding out that Bangor in NI is a city was a surprise.

RhubarbAndGingerCheesecake · 11/04/2024 11:39

MuggedByReality · 10/04/2024 17:26

I have visited all the major cities in the U.K. plus the vast majority of other cities in England. I have also around half of those in Scotland, Wales & NI. Regional cities that I have never visited include Hull, Swansea, Dundee & Newry.

It seems very odd that somewhere as large & economically important as Reading is not a city.

Edited

The map men did a thing of why somewhere a city - it's very arbitrary and not what I thought at all.

A few in wales ( definitely Cardiff)
3 in England
4 in Scotland ( had a holiday there last year )
Not visited many big English cities up north only passed them on the motorways

myfavouritemutant · 11/04/2024 17:04

43 (35 England, 2 Scotland, 2 NI and 4 Wales).

Several of the England ones as a result of going to away games supporting my local football team!

Great thread op thank you. Surprised by some of the big towns that aren’t actually cities.

NewName24 · 11/04/2024 22:17

This is a great thread.

I feel some new Quiz Questions coming on from what I've learned on here.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/04/2024 22:43

32 in England
4 in Scotland,
2 in Wales
0 in Northern Ireland.

That doesn't count ones I have been through but not stopped in.
