How many UK cities have you visited?

Inspired by a post on another thread, I decided to work this out. I've only been to 40 of the 76 - 32 in England, 6 in Scotland and only one each for Wales and Northern Ireland. (I've not included the Crown dependencies etc on the list though I have been to Douglas so it's 41 if I count that.) Some of my "visits" are a bit tenuous, such as my car broke down in Doncaster once so I perhaps haven't seen the place to its best advantage, but I haven't included places I have been through but not stopped at, such as going through Milton Keynes on the train, or being diverted through St Asaph due to roadworks on the way to a North Wales holiday!
I thought I'd visited most parts of the UK but looks like I actually have some pretty big gaps. How many have you been to? I have to confess that I didn't know that some of the places on this list even were cities.

Easier to work out those I haven’t been to: about 18 or 19. None in NI or the crown dependencies, and none in Essex mainly.
All thanks to a summer holiday job as a student when I had to travel around the UK.

RhubarbAndGingerCheesecake · 10/04/2024 15:34

24 - I thought it would have been more TBH - none in N.I as never been and only two in Scotland not been up there much - Wales and England mostly.

toycat · 10/04/2024 15:38

35 - the majority in England but a few in Scotland, Wales and NI

40 in England (possibly a few others in the passed through them/changed train there sense or when I was too young to remember). Probably about half of them I have only been to a sports ground(s) and/or gig venue so haven't 'seen' much of the city but if people passing through on a train counts then half a dozen times in the football club for over 2 hours must count.
3 in Scotland, 3 in Wales. I've not been to NI (yet) or any of the crown dependencies.

ginasevern · 10/04/2024 15:57

16 in England
5 in Wales
2 in Scotland

I've not been to 13 of the English ones, 3 in NI and 1 in Scotland. So 59 out of 76.

I went to A LOT of gigs in my twenties all over the country.

I was thinking about this after that other thread so thank you OP. DH is currently on a thing to visit more countries than years he's lived so very much in that vein! You have just added some targets to add to that concept but within the UK.

Yes, I think a lot of us tend to view "travel" as meaning visiting other countries, but there are so many fascinating places in this country that are easy to miss. Due to a combination of Covid, ill health and trying to reduce my carbon footprint I haven't been abroad for a few years now but have visited some fabulous UK destinations. I'm not a sun worshipper so not particularly bothered about the weather which helps, and we have so much history, natural beauty and architectural interest in this country. I think I have taken it for granted for too long and am trying to rectify that. Northern Ireland is a big gap for me. I've been to Belfast but only to a 2 day work conference so I'm hoping to go there "properly" later this year or next.

32 in total ( 2 in Wales and 1 in Scotland)

RedToothBrush · 10/04/2024 16:19

Love Belfast. Great city.

I want to get back over the Irish sea and both sides of the border as I've not managed to see much outside the cities yet.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 10/04/2024 16:23

@Clearinguptheclutter Southend has been a City for two years now.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/04/2024 16:28

To my recollection I've been to 30 of three places across England, Wales, Scotland and Gibraltar - although most of them have only been for a couple of hours' visit .

rainontherooftop · 10/04/2024 16:35
  1. Some only brief visits en route to somewhere else.
70sdisco · 10/04/2024 16:39

Mostly in the first half of the list for some reason and I’ve never been to Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Viksono · 10/04/2024 17:09

None in wales or NI, all 8 for Scotland and 5 in England.

hornsofahugedilemma · 10/04/2024 17:09
  1. Ticked a lot off in NI last year, visited for the first time.
JaninaDuszejko · 10/04/2024 17:13

All the Scottish ones (8)
Only one Welsh one (Cardiff)
None in NI
26 in England
So 35 in total.

You don't always go to cities when travelling though, I've been to NI and went sailing on Lough Erne so have been to Enniskillen but none of the cities. And had one of my best holidays ever in Snowdonia but didn't visit a city. Meanwhile I went to several of these cities as a student but saw no sights except student halls and pubs (Leicester, Coventry, Doncaster, Stoke, Dundee).

ghostbusters · 10/04/2024 17:23

I've been to 11 of the ones in England and all the Scottish ones, and that's it. I've never been to NI or Wales 🙈

Mb76 · 10/04/2024 17:23

47 in England
6 in Scotland
2 in Wales
2 in NI

Most of these I visited multiple times between 2014 and 2020 for my previous job, which Covid killed off …

MuggedByReality · 10/04/2024 17:26

I have visited all the major cities in the U.K. plus the vast majority of other cities in England. I have also around half of those in Scotland, Wales & NI. Regional cities that I have never visited include Hull, Swansea, Dundee & Newry.

It seems very odd that somewhere as large & economically important as Reading is not a city.

Ilovemyshed · 10/04/2024 17:31

BermudaBrit · 10/04/2024 17:35

I've not been to any of the NI cities. I've been to all the Scottish ones and 34? of the English ones.

I'm from Hamilton Parish, Bermuda, for those saying what were you surprised is a city. I'm not surprised, because it's our capital and I know it's been given 'city' status - but Hamilton has a population of 850 people, so it's not really what you would describe as a city. 😂

DomesticatedSavage · 10/04/2024 17:38

30, spread evenly across England, NI, Wales and Scotland plus Stanley in the Falklands
