A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

Mine is £70 for both now and I thought that was expensive.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 13:37

Contents insurance renewal this month was almost double it was last year :(
Did a bit of searching online and now have a new one that is half the price. I am just annoyed that I had to do this and they couldn't match this new quote. I'm not sure why insurance companies do this ?
Friend said that her road side assistance went up over double for the year , she cancelled the policy and then had a mail shot asking for an awful lot less as a 'valued customer' , but only after a phone call to say it was too much.
I think they hope that people just carry on paying the monthly payments without checking first or something

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 13:39

I remember when a wash and cut was around 15 pounds and I could treat myself to some nice shampoo as well
It's 46 now and I don't go as often and don't bother with the more expensive hair products
Nail bars have put their prices up this week , but I don't tend to go to those.

We have just got back from a premier inn. We stayed for a few nights and it cost over £500!!! Room was dirty and the breakfast buffet was mouldy and inedible.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 10/04/2024 13:48

I can remember when sweets were 2p and a packet of crisps was 10p.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 13:57

I can remember when crisps and chocolate frogs were 10p , but wages were incredibly low too!
Premier inns used to be very good value, but they are not so much now. Always worth complaining ( especially if they send you a satisfaction survey to complete)

Yes completely i hate ringing everything up through the till. Our big shop is £100 a week and i always come home feeling like i've hardly got anything to show for it.

Last week i spotted Pukka teabags in Asda are £4.75 for 20! How can dusty little teabags possibly be nearly a fiver - i used to buy them as a treat sometimes but i can't bring myself to now. I feel like that about a lot of things these days.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 14:19

Oh, yeah, I'm not even strapped for cash but the price of getting my hair highlighted has just pushed me past the - you're taking the piss - threshold and I'm letting my hair go to seed.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 10/04/2024 14:19

My colour and foils is £48 and my nails (fingers and toes with removal) is £30

Devilsmommy · 10/04/2024 14:20

@Whereinharrogate £100pw is what our shop costs and it's amazing how little you get for that. My bugbear is how crap vegetables and fruit are. They just don't last like they used to

NoSquirrels · 10/04/2024 14:20

April here is increased council tax (ouch), car insurance renewal (double ouch), just got an email off Spotify putting that up £2 a month, bloody Disney + which I’d cheerfully cancel but the other householders would revolt went up on annual renewal by more than £30 as my DH apparently upgraded it from Standard to Premium (argh) and the kids have a bunch of stuff that needs paying for this term - it’s a long month…

bakewellbride · 10/04/2024 14:20

@FlyingSoap yep me, dh, 5 year old and toddler all in one bedroom. 4 nights, £550.

Yearendjoy · 10/04/2024 14:21

My hair costs £120 and my nails are £20 to have gel put on fingers (doesn't include removal).

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 14:21

I can't believe the prices of everyday food items these days , even with any money off vouchers it comes to a small fortune and only three of us live here. I feel for those with children or teens who may eat a lot or need a packed lunch each day for school and so on as even bread isn't that cheap anymore and fillings cost too.
Lots of mark up on crisps and chocolate etc but that might be so called ' fat taxes' that have crept in over the years by governments to try to promote healthier eating maybe ?
Fruit is definitely more expensive.

Did they come with a little packet of salt? 😁

beeswain · 10/04/2024 14:26

I took my cat to the vet this morning for her annual inoculations. I used to have a yearly plan which covered these plus flea and worming and it had gone up from £120 to £190. She had her jabs only and I'll buy the flea treatments elsewhere.

And my Denplan now only covers 1 hygienist visit a year instead of 2

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 10/04/2024 14:27

Hair is £150 here, nails around £46.

During covid I started doing them myself. Box dye and nails and have never had so many compliments. I only get it done twice a year now.
Nails- I bought a salon kit for home. Took some practice but ok now. I don’t have acrylics, just gel.

For me it’s time, DM not well, DD 7, I work full time and DH has two jobs (1 is a paid hobby). We also have a dog. I don’t enjoy being touched particularly, it’s not relaxing and I don’t enjoy it. I’d be sat there half a day to get my nails and hair done. I just think, look what else ei could be doing.
Do colleges still offer this? Mobile appts are cheaper too I think.

Car insurance was around £500 this year.

Airbnb can work out cheaper than premier bed- bug inns.

darkchocolatecoffee · 10/04/2024 14:27

My favourite eggs (Clarence Court Burford Browns) are now £3.10 for a pack of 6.

A bar of chocolate (I like Lindt 85%) is now £2.75 😫

What are you doing to your hair that costs £135?!

Mine is £150 for a cut a t section and that's with a stylist, not even senior.

LauderSyme · 10/04/2024 14:29

Last time I paid for a dental hygienist it was £45. Now it's £135!

Different practice but still. My old practice culled their books after Covid. When I asked them why they deregistered me they said because I hadn't made any appointments in however many months. No... because you wouldn't let me because of Covid!
