A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

Am not trying to write your poor cat off, but just for consideration ...

I am 100% a fan of pet insurance, wouldn't be without it until a decent age - but I do cancel it when the (for me) dog gets to an age/health stage where I wouldn't feel that any major/invasive treatment would be in the animal's best interests.

When I feel that the balance is tipping that way, I might have a year or two at a cheaper level of cover that 'splits the risk' a bit - gives me some cover, but not paying through the nose for a lifetime/high level of cover policy that would cover treatment that might no longer be appropriate.

Yes, that is my thinking even though it is a bit upsetting to contemplate! Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Chinese food has doubled in the last 3 years, wtf.

Bought two flapjacks and a carton of kids apple juice the other day. £11.75. I was stunned.

£1.40 for a tin of Heinz beans in my local tesco.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 16:53

Fecking hell, were you in a museum cafe? They like to rock an overpriced flapjack.

gojumpjump · 10/04/2024 16:54

@Desecratedcoconut nope, standard village cafe.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 16:55

My hairdresser charges me £120 for highlights , I used to remember when my hair cost me £40 then my hairdresser moved else where when Covid hit but I think my current hairdresser charges extra cause I have long hair but she gets a junior to dry and style but yeah price of everything has went up.

I wish my salary had risen in line with house prices since the 90s. Yes things rise in price but wages haven't risen in line with them. Thats the issue.

Societal divide is and has been on the agenda of every governing body the world over since the dawn of time. The bigger the gap between them and us the better. The problem is people still think their governments and employers have our best interests at heart. Want some advice? Get a job in sales or politics, that way at least you'll be paid to deceive people.

Full Balayage is over £200 at my hairdressers now!

@MidnightMeltdown it's shocking nowadays I get prices go up but the prices in some places are shocking 😮

Tv licence due for renewal next month. Pretty much £170 now. I don't even watch tv very often.

That sounds like £170 you can save then. Cancel it. Trust me, you won't miss it.

It is wage stagnation - if wages had followed inflation, over the last 20 years, then the average UK wage of around £34K should be £50K. Check out the record profits posted by Tescos today, we are being rolled over by everything / everyone in our society!

MidnightMeltdown · 10/04/2024 17:19

@Cowlisk

You're probably right!

The freezing of tax bands also doesn't help. 50k isn't a particularly high salary these days (taking into account inflation, housing etc).

Meat. I haven’t eaten any in about 6 days. It’s too expensive. Non stop dizzy spells all week as I have my period and my iron levels are low as it is.

Moier · 10/04/2024 17:32

I go to my local hairdressers.. not a big one in town.. she's fantastic and prices haven't gone up much.
My daughter learnt nail technician so that comes free.

mmmmmchocolate · 10/04/2024 17:35

I’ve just refused to pay £1.75 for a big of revels from the poundshop… they should be A POUND! 😂 pretty sad now though.

We have just got back from a premier inn. We stayed for a few nights and it cost over £500!!! Room was dirty and the breakfast buffet was mouldy and inedible.

Where did you go to ? I think some are better than others.

willWillSmithsmith · 10/04/2024 17:44

A lot of supermarkets are taking the piss. An item I’d regularly buy was £1.50, it suddenly went up to £2 now suddenly it’s down to its ‘new’ low price of £1.65. Even M&S has been playing games, they’ve marked an item I’ve been buying on a regular basis as a ‘price drop’ but it’s the same price I’ve been buying it at for at least a year!

My hairdresser always looks embarrassed at the till!
I know she works from home for her relatives and friends , but renting a chair at a salon means she is stuck with their prices for the days she's there.
I don't like people in the home as they don't sweep up after them and you have to wash your own hair. Only had some one in once though, I'm sure it works for many and is cheaper and some might clear up afterwards

I have a mobile hairdresser. She puts an old sheet down on the kitchen floor under the chair where I sit for a cut and gathers it all up afterwards . She washes my hair at the sink .

Costs me £45 for a colour, cut and blow dry .

ItsallIeverwanted · 10/04/2024 17:48

In relation to insurance, I had two renewals this year, both went up by a few hundred quid each for nothing, but I was busy, thought perhaps that's what CoL is doing to insurance. I sat down this weekend and properly searched for exactly the same level of cover for both, so nothing inferior about the insurance (e.g. for car, I had breakdown cover, legal costs, protect NCB)- and I found both for LESS than last year! So don't be me and be lazy, proactively search and don't just accept some of these price rises as inevitable.

Next!! My go-to shop for reasonable priced clothes. Had a look at their New in section this week and a nice dress is now around £60 as opposed to the usual £30.

Is it because you are looking at the branded section or a particular line of clothing? I think that their own clothing lines are good value - but perhaps that's because I buy the cheaper, more basic lines.

ItsallIeverwanted · 10/04/2024 17:50

I should say that both of them I managed to get renewed at the cheaper price, one had auto-renewed but I cancelled within the 14 days and even with losing £50 due to not doing it quick enough, I still saved over £600 in one afternoon. Unbelievable.

Many of these companies are using the Cost of Living crisis as a cover for increasing prices and scamming customers even more than usual, thinking we will not notice as 'everything is going up'. There is a lot more competition out there than we think that we can use to our advantage.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/04/2024 17:52

@AdoraBell when I meet a friend for coffee we often go to Wetherspoons as it's around £1.60 and refillable. We've also got an old fashioned kind of independent shop that's quite cheap - I think Costa etc is extortionate.
