A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

We were in the US late last year and the food prices were astronomical. A small box of Kellogg's cornflakes was $7, I checked online and it'd be £3 in Tesco's here.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 15:28

I was wondering about white food. I was thinking bread, rice, potatoes 😁

Evenstar · 10/04/2024 15:29

We went for a Sunday roast at a local pub, it was nice but not large portions, we had a dessert and a soft drink each as well and it was over £50. I was sat there thinking what a beautiful piece of meat I could have cooked at home for less with ample leftovers for another day. It really spoils what should be an enjoyable treat.

I bought my own UV lamp to do my own gels in lockdown. It's saved me an absolute fortune, plus it saves a lot of time as I can do them whenever I like. I wouldn't go back to a salon again. I usually get one or two different colours for birthdays/Christmas so have a good choice of colours as well now.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/04/2024 15:30

What annoys me is, okay, the price of food has gone up. Ukraine war etc making it more expensive and so costs more. But then, if the price rises are just to cover that increase then the shops shouldn't be making more of a profit but tescos has announced record profits..

Which means, the price increase isn't just price of goods, but a decent mark up for the stores as well. So they could reduce profits and save the consumers money if they wanted to.

I used to do our weekly shop for £80, it's now £150. Madness!!

Have to agree on TV licence. I’m not renewing, I tend to only watch Netflix and prime anyway. Not paying £14 a month for bbc etc

We used to just pay tv licence and got good tv.

Now there’s so many different ones, Netflix. Disney plus, Discovery etc etc.

And all these up plus tv licence and its like 60 quid just to watch tv. Tv licence only gives you access to free view and terrestrial. And they are mostly crap now.

DeadDoveDoNotEat · 10/04/2024 15:32

I get Disney+ through my bank account, so there's an option if anyone can be bothered switching. Club Lloyds.

mitogoshi · 10/04/2024 15:33

I pay £52 for both (hair £25, nails £27)

We have just got back from a premier inn. We stayed for a few nights and it cost over £500!!! Room was dirty and the breakfast buffet was mouldy and inedible.

Did you complain about it? I stay in Premier inns a lot and have never experienced this. Worst was out in Cumbria near Workington but it was the area that was horrid. Everything else was fine.

We were in New York last week, $5 for a standard bottle if Coca-Cola!

FrenchandSaunders · 10/04/2024 15:35

@Evenstar I always think this after a pub roast, expensive and never as nice as a home cooked one. Plus no leftovers for bubble and sandwiches.
Nice not to cook though!

@FlyingSoap yep me, dh, 5 year old and toddler all in one bedroom. 4 nights, £550.

How far in advance did you book?

I can understand why some things have gone up...food for example, as raw materials are more expensive. Grain from Ukraine etc...
I understand why services requiring premises have gone up... electricity bills at hairdresser for example...but why have insurance costs rocketed...I've never made a claim, not moved to more risky place and drive same car...yet insurance renewal was nearly double...why...what is causing this ?

When there was a thread a while ago about who had got a pay rise and which sectors they worked in, most people who replied with the higher percentage rises worked in insurance and financial sectors.

StMarieforme · 10/04/2024 15:39

Premier Inn breakfasts are fabulous!

IClaudine · 10/04/2024 15:40

Pet insurance has gone up to £750 for one cat! She is 13 now, but still. Will look elsewhere, but most now won't do lifetime coverage at her age.

I have never had to use insurance thankfully, but if I cancel no doubt that's when something will happen!

GR8GAL · 10/04/2024 15:44

And you could buy a house in the 90s for £30,000. Its called inflation. No one ever complains about making more money now than they would have 20 years ago.

I wish my salary had risen in line with house prices since the 90s. Yes things rise in price but wages haven't risen in line with them. Thats the issue.

I think Lidl and Aldi are highly store dependant. Our Aldi is crap for fruit and veg whereas the local Lidl is reliably good.

I don't get fruit and veg from Aldi, doesn't keep and the taste and quality are awful . Not near a Lidl so can't comment on them. Use Asda for fruit and veg but have to say that their quality and shelf life is not what it used to be, is this a "Brexit Benefit"? Was in there yesterday and the peppers were all on the turn, some of the cucumber portions were brown at the edges and the tomatoes have gone up again by 20p for a pack of 6. Spent just under £50 and that was just for me, heaven only knows how people with kids to feed are managing

Am not trying to write your poor cat off, but just for consideration ...

I am 100% a fan of pet insurance, wouldn't be without it until a decent age - but I do cancel it when the (for me) dog gets to an age/health stage where I wouldn't feel that any major/invasive treatment would be in the animal's best interests.

When I feel that the balance is tipping that way, I might have a year or two at a cheaper level of cover that 'splits the risk' a bit - gives me some cover, but not paying through the nose for a lifetime/high level of cover policy that would cover treatment that might no longer be appropriate.

brightyellowflower · 10/04/2024 15:50

I'm sufferening twice really. Self employed and charge £40 for my services. Been charging that since 2020. Really need to increase my prices but daren't as I will definitely lose customers BUT all of my costs have gone up. My professional insurances have gone up from £150 - £400 a year for eg.

Companies that jack up their prices lose our business:

Diet Coke - Went cold turkey, saving a fortune (and our teeth).
Heinz - Get all our condiments from Lidl now.
Disneyplus and similar - Set up an account in a foreign country for less than half the price.
TV licence - Cancelled, use torrent or IPTV for any extra programs.
Hair - Use a mobile hairdresser who has kept her rates the same.
Takeaways - Not worth the price. We sometimes get chinese mains and make our own rice.
Gym - We bought a used treadmill and weights and work out at home now.

We still spend on stuff like holidays, high quality clothing (but buy less), nice gifts for our loved ones.

I’m glad we’re not the only ones to make our own rice to go with a Chinese takeaway. Our local one charges £3.20 for plain boiled rice! That’s near-on £20 for 6 of us just for the rice!! For Rice!! Plain boiled rice!!! No, sorry I just won’t pay that, it’s ridiculous.

I can’t afford hair dresser or manicure. We used to go coffee every morning, it’s gone from £2.50 to £3.45, and that’s just a simple black coffee.

I bought a pot of tea and a fruit shoot recently and it was £7.15!😱

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 16:22

Fish and chips is something else. It's almost doubled in price over the last couple of years and it's over £55 for the five of us.

MrKDilkington · 10/04/2024 16:37

After a decade of being at a point financially where I've been able to consistently buy 'nicer' clothing from brands like Hobbs, Whistles, Jigsaw, Boden, I can no longer justify the expense for the decline in quality, so I've switched to fast fashion.
New Look and Zara it is for me now (apart from real wool sweaters - I won't do without those).
