A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

@Anjelika unless you want the brand new trendiest stuff (which I'm not sure is in Next...) then I'd go on Vinted, and search for Next items in your size, you may be very surprised, it's a brand that sells a lot on Vinted for good prices. I've just got a linen jacket on there for £12 including postage, £8 price. Next jeans and trousers also appear there a lot. If you like brand new, then search brand new with tags, brand Next, I've resold Next stuff on there that has never been worn.

I should say that both of them I managed to get renewed at the cheaper price, one had auto-renewed but I cancelled within the 14 days and even with losing £50 due to not doing it quick enough, I still saved over £600 in one afternoon. Unbelievable.

Many of these companies are using the Cost of Living crisis as a cover for increasing prices and scamming customers even more than usual, thinking we will not notice as 'everything is going up'. There is a lot more competition out there than we think that we can use to our advantage.

I absolutely hate this. Many companies these days seem to rely on the fact that people are too busy and stressed with working and raising families to realise that they are being ripped off. They prey on the time poor.

Virgin media did it to me when they tried to increase my broadband bill to about £45 a month!

What are you doing to your hair that costs £135?!

My haircut now is £110. Specialist curly cut

A few companies respond to a phone call telling them you're off ! Then they come up with a solution or different price than the one quoted.
Never worked for us with insurances , but broadband and phones I think it's worth a try!
The daily mail ran an expose on insurance companies and wanted them to honour the old clients as if they were new ones in regards to prices , but I haven't seen any evidence that anyone is listening to that one going by my last renewals.

yarnwitch · 10/04/2024 18:07

I do my own hair, but box dye has gone up so much since covid. Dye's that were always £5-£6 are now £10-£12. Same with make up, most of its expensive now even the budget brands. The quality doesn't seem to be great either.
Walking round Superdrug the other day, there were lots of shampoos at premium brand prices but were just brands like L'Oréal. Some toothpastes were £6-£7 a tube.
DH came back from the supermarket today saying a large jar of Nutella was £8. It's madness.

Did they come with a little packet of salt? 😁

No but i remember them too ShockGrin

hotpotlover · 10/04/2024 18:12

Our gas and electricity bill was around 70 pounds about 2 years ago. It's now 220 pounds for our modest end of terrace 2 bed.

Nursery will cost us about 170 pounds more from September when I return to work after maternity leave. We used to pay 1200 pounds, now it will be around 1370 pounds.

Mortgage will go up by 150 pounds in August.

A few years back you could rent a 3 bed semi for 700 pounds in my area. Now you don't get any search results for under 1200 pounds.

We spend about 600 pounds on our monthly lidl bill. We used to spend 400 pounds.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 18:14

Savers are cheaper for toiletries, but I have noticed the odd 10p on things here and there , so soon it'll be like everything else! Toothpaste in supermarkets is a lot more expensive for some reason ?
I don't buy make up anymore.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 18:16

I remember duel fuel for £50 a month and thinking that was bad .. it's 147 now and they want to put it up again :(
Seems the last few years have just gone wild.

listsandbudgets · 10/04/2024 18:17

train tickets... horrendous. nearly £200 for me and DD to go and look at a university this weekend and that's with her having a railcard

they can't even book us seats for part of the journey as the service doesn't do bookings... I hate buying train tickets

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 18:22

Buying anything like train tickets or entertainment tickets or just about anything is a faff and not made easy especially for ' techno phobics ' like me.
You always need ' pass codes' or words too .. it's done deliberately I'm sure

jasminocereusbritannicus · 10/04/2024 18:31

Crikey - I can’t ever imagine paying over £100 for my hair to be done! 😮
I go to a very nice town centre salon and pay £35 for a cut and blow dry every 8 weeks.
I’ve also never had my nails done! I grow my own and paint them if I’m going out somewhere nice… otherwise I usually leave them bare.🙂

VampireWeekday · 10/04/2024 19:05

Yes!! I had my hair cut and blow dried (not coloured or restyled), it came to £60. I can only afford it every three months and even then it's literally my one indulgence.

LibbyLemoncake · 10/04/2024 19:15

Redrum00 · 10/04/2024 17:26

Meat. I haven’t eaten any in about 6 days. It’s too expensive. Non stop dizzy spells all week as I have my period and my iron levels are low as it is.

Beans (especially Kidney beans and black beans )are really good for iron and relatively cheap.

Wishicouldwhistle · 10/04/2024 19:25

bin bags in Tesco £5.95! I mean there are bigger bills and things to worry about but sometimes you just have a wtf when you’re doing your shop

TiredCatLady · 10/04/2024 19:26

I used to be able to spend £25/week and have enough to cook two of us fresh meals all week with a bottle of wine on top. Lucky if I can manage on £50 now. We earn ok but when a can of Heinz soup is £1.90?!? Even the own brand stuff is now 70p. Stopped shopping at Lidl and Aldi because the fresh stuff is rubbish and works out more expensive than the local grocers by the time half of it has been chucked in the bin.

Don't get me started on hairdressers etc.

Suchardchoccy · 10/04/2024 19:38

@TiredCatLady 70p is still cheaper than £1.90 tho, and they are the same. Even if there is a slight difference i don't think £1.20 more justifies it

treacledan71 · 10/04/2024 19:45

Thought would get some nice bread today from Hindleys. Wholemeal asked for it sliced. 2.69! It is lovely but I was shocked. Tbh not sure what I thought it would be.

Pedallleur · 10/04/2024 19:49

And Tesco announce record profits of £2 billion plus. Coincidence??

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 10/04/2024 19:52

bakewellbride · 10/04/2024 13:46

We have just got back from a premier inn. We stayed for a few nights and it cost over £500!!! Room was dirty and the breakfast buffet was mouldy and inedible.

Can you let us know which one?
thanks

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 19:54

Yep, tesco record big profits and nobody tends to challenge it.
I bet the retail staff on the shop floor don't receive a pay rise and prices won't come down.

VeneziaJ · 10/04/2024 19:55

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 13:37

Contents insurance renewal this month was almost double it was last year :(
Did a bit of searching online and now have a new one that is half the price. I am just annoyed that I had to do this and they couldn't match this new quote. I'm not sure why insurance companies do this ?
Friend said that her road side assistance went up over double for the year , she cancelled the policy and then had a mail shot asking for an awful lot less as a 'valued customer' , but only after a phone call to say it was too much.
I think they hope that people just carry on paying the monthly payments without checking first or something

Virgin media emailed me to say my monthly bill was going to rise from £39.99 to £91 a month!! I contacted them and said it was a complete rip off! And I would be leaving😡 I now pay £42 a month for the same package, but with faster broadband! It drives me mad that they try to slip these massive price hikes under the radar in hopes we wont notice and will not do anything about it 😡

timenowplease · 10/04/2024 20:08

And don't forget shrinkflation. The size of things getting much smaller.

I bought a pack of falafels last week and they are half the size they used to be.

We'll be needing magnifying glasses to see things if this goes on.

Babyroobs · 10/04/2024 20:11

Forgot to take my lunch to work one day last week and pooped across to the snack shop. Was charged £5 for a sausage and egg bap. They weren't even nice sausages.

AuraBora · 10/04/2024 20:14

Agree the insurance hikes are horrendous.. on top of everything else. They just totally rip you off on renewals if you don't auto renew and go to them to see if they will match lower offers. I recently discovered we had Rac breakdown cover auto renew last few years - Dh was suppose to sort that one! £151 in 2022 up to £365 quoted for 2024-25. Totally ridiculous. I called up to cancel..!
He only came down to £320 so I still cancelled!
Now I have to do all the broadband/utilities as well. Such a pain...
